Smeltz for me

Smeltz for me - only Nix player capable of holding onto the ball today, Ferrante did well too, great goal and some nice cross-field passes.  Can someone please introduce an anti-vote option so i can use it on Old? - he was clearly at fault for each of he goals

Coveny showed all his class. A selection a bit outside the square but he contributes very well.

Elrich cause he bet his brother and cause he sent the ball in better than other games.

thought id chuck in an amazing fact about smeltz. Before tonight he had scored 8 goals from 14 shots on target. Amazing!

Old HAS GOT TO BE SACKED!! Showed exactly why he's not good enough. I did here the commentators say that Ben Sigmund has been signed for next year though, which is a good idea.

Agree.. Why wasn't he subbed off in favour of O'Dor after so many terrible mistakes? Surely O'Dor couldn't have been worse.

Old is only a kid. Given time he might come right. He had me crapping myself at various points tonight though.

For tonight, I thought Smeltz was first class. He held the ball up well at times, noticeable when we were desperate to retain possession and everyone else seemed to be getting caught. Also, Coveny looked good too.

Voted Smeltz, he was everywhere and holding the side together at times tonight. Ferrante would be a close second, he was on form in all departments.

So glad to see Ferrante have a great match, he's deserved it after the effort he's been putting in.

And why is Old even put on these polls?

I'm giving my vote to Ferrante, his goal was a sweet low strike, left footer and changed the game. Good games also Smeltz, Coveny, Elrich, everyone else hung inhepatitis2007-12-31 00:16:55

See my thought on Ferrante on latest thread, fantastic performance. I thought Smeltz was a little indecisive tonight, he could have played in Covs or shot a couple of times when he got into good positions but ended up doing neither. Phoenix performance of the year, fantastic.

Smeltz for me - just for the unrelenting work-rate; consolation vote (if one was allowed) to Ferrante for getting a goal AT LAST !!!

everyone chill out on oldy. hes only 21 the average age 4 a defender is about 26. hes got tme. he carved last year 4 the all whites in europe and i no 4 a fac was offered good contracts, alot beta than newcastle, but he stayed here and afta a year signed 4 the nix as ricki is trying to build an all whites squad to qualify 4 a world cup. play the ball not the man, maybe if we r good nzers we will get in behind him and support him. we still wom 3-2, stop being in the mold of tall poppy syndrome. u guys r worse than the all blacks supporters.

i picked smeltz but the whole team needs praise for winning the game with only about 40% of the possesion and holding onto win the game.

Just dont see how all the blame can be laid on Old,watch it again who laid that ridiculous back pass to Old as it has been all season its DUMB defending and its more than laying the blame on one players.

I went for Smeltz, just over Ferrante (who's distributution goes from strength to strength).
Lia was off tonight but has been solid lately.  Elrich had his best half of the year, really good balls in but faded.
As to Old, he has been out of his depth all year, it is not really fair to blame the man, it is now time to blame those whoi put him out week after week when he obviously struggles with the basics.

A great away win ground out with 34% of the ball.  We looked awsome going forward.  But again as the commentators went on and on and on about why hasnt our defence even improved a little this season?.  While the opposition gets a gifted goal every week we will not make the top half.  If this can be fixed we are challenging for top spot.

Cant wait foir Friday.

GO ON PHOENIX !!!!!!!!!

Some players did well, namely, Smeltz and Ferrante, Coveny too. But I voted Moss, cos once again, I think he had more influence on what the final result was than any other player. Some crucial stops, and at key times too. Without him, the Bogans could actually have run away with the game.

I don't want to be negative and critical of individuals, but I have to agree with the sentiments that suggest Steven Old is out of his depth at this point in his career. His poor positioning and what has become trademark hesitancy led to Rees looking bad and Moss getting booked for giving away the penalty. I cringe when ever the attack goes down his side. Even Lochhead had to get across and bail him out a couple of times when he was drifting.

Felipe was poor. The worst thing is a lack of defensive workrate - the type of thing that makes you wonder how the opposition midfield stream into our box unmarked, despite us having 5 men in the middle. When Johnson came on, his tracking back right to our own 6-yard box saved a certain goal. We need midfielders who do that. Rees is a good defender, but the lack of defensive tracking made him look like a mongoose last night. Can't believe how much room some of their players had around our penalty area when moving about unmarked. Don't forget, we only have a back 3. That in itself is fine, as long as the midfield are getting the heartrate up doing their defensive job.

Pity Lia will miss next week. Won't be such a pity that Brown will miss next week.

Smeltz was incredible, they just couldn't takcle the guy.

Honourable mentions to Ferrante and Moss as well

regarding felipe, i guess it depends what his instructions are from the coaching staff

i don't think his general work rate can be faulted, he usually comes off knackered -either from his efforts or the knocks his been given

agreed we struggled with our shape particularly in the first half, how much of that is down to felipe depends on what role he was given

I've lost count of the number of times this has been politely pointed out to him. When I see the bank of caps, I don't bother reading the posts - too much hard work. If he wants to shout to himself, let him get on with it and ignore his posts like much of the rest of us.

Grear points pao1908!

I can't believe how much space we give to attacking teams outside the box. The midfielders hardly track back and as a result the defenders are often left high and dry. I don't know why Ricki Herbert has not turned grey yet....I thought the Aussie commentators were shiite again last night but I agreed with them that some of the defending was schoolboy stuff!!!!

Once Johnson came on and we compresssed our formation we looked a whole lot more comfortable....Still 3-2 away is bloody fantastic WELL DONE BOYS

Whats the rumours about this new guy Sigmund? Has he played A-league? How old is he?
I think I would prefer an older more experianced midfielder...someone like Rees with a bit of pace.

I've gone for Smeltz. He just keeps on scoring. Who would have thought one of our strikers would have been joint top goal scorer at the start of the season. Top stuff!

Why do people think Elrich is playing well. He was lazier than me yesterday. I agree he has the ability but his work rate is 0. For someone playing wide in a 3-5-2 formation he needs to work his butt (and a large one at that) off. For me his isn't earing his marquee label at the moment. I would love for him to prove me wrong but he has a long way to go to impress me.

Its no longer a problem.

Agree entirely... he has been consistently ordinary. THat's it.

But on the positive side Smeltz has been sensational - he has been playing superbly and last night he lifted the level even higher. At the start of the season I was sceptical but now I'm a complete fan. Hope he wins the golden boot.

Elrich was one of the few bright sparks during the first half, finally putting in a series of good crosses, unfortunately the standard slipped in the second half (but he still managed to deliver a perfect corner for Rees to score the winner).I am now starting to believe that he will come good. He is still a classy player and there isn't anyone else in the squad who is genuinely equipped to play wide right anyway. I think by next season he will be a force for us.

I voted Ferrante because I've been a fan of his all season (even during the early games when people sl*gged him off I think you can find some comments of mine on this board defending him on the basis of his work rate, willingness to have a go and fine passing ability). Smeltz was fantastic though, he really is a danger every single time he gets the ball, he truly embarrassed some of the Newcastle defenders last night.

Well now... Seeing as critical thinking consists of mental processes of discernment, analysis and evaluation. Those that do, think he is playing well, must have gone through that three part process and made a judgement.

That said Bill called me, not ten minutes ago, and said that he, Elrich, played well last night. If Bill tells me that's so then it's so.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Not so sure about Rees. It looked like we missed Dodd big time. Yes Old had a bit of a shocker but Rees made a few mistakes as well and didn't marshall things that well. The goal was handy though.

Why didn't Moss get more votes? He did concede a penalty but did loads to keep the Jets at bay.
