Is he a permanent, or just temporary Goal Keeping coach?
And he is a different Mark Oates to the Hutt Valley High School teacher/ first 11 coach right??

Same person. Only part-time with Nix hence Utting's comments about the goalkeeping issues. Has been around the Nix for a while. TW as well.

Its no longer a problem.

I am ignorant as anything when it comes to goal keeping coaches but it seems to me if you have two very experianced goal keepers, one aged 34 and the other 37, then what don't they already know about goal keeping. Surely Oats is all they need....

Sorry, don't agree.
Even Tiger Woods has a coach.

What candidates actually exist in NZ to be this coach? (I.e: who has specialized in this coaching area and has done so at a reasonable level?). The only one I can think of is Gosling, or do we have to look offshore?

Auckland will rise once more

More likely to be a F*ck Bus rather than a coach...

Gosling has been in Newcastle since retiring as a footballer after playing in the NSL for the Breakers.

He's a Professional Golfer now. That must count for something...

Tony Jamison could be a contender, currently working with the Cook Islands.

Not taking the piss. If Fifa are willing to invest into him and the Cook Islands can se his value surely he's got something to offer.

With two old pro's like we've got we need someone to help keep them sharp, not expand their horizons. Could be a good stop gap for a year and he grow and up and coming coach.

I feel like as club we have the chance to take a few gambles, and this would be a fairly safe one.z

I for one am very surprised CI and FIFA are investing in TJ to coach. He has a bit of a reputation brumbys.

It wouldn't be a gamble it would be completely ridiculous and it won't happen.

Fuck this stupid game

On the field, sure. But the guys a GC at heart, and I think he'd have a lot to offer, and does pretty well mentoring younger guys.

Where did you get the idea that FIFA is investing in him?  Pretty sure FIFA gave CI some money through the GOAL programme, and the CI employed him as a coach.  As far as i can tell most of his experience is coaching wellington fed teams.  Hardly similar.  This isn't a dig at him at all.  He's been a great servant of wellington football. I would imagine he wouldn't think he would be qualified to be an a-league coach.

On a slightly more serious note, why do we not think that Oatsy is an ideal candidate for this job?

He has played at a reasonable level domestically, has been a specialist goalkeeper coach for years, and is well respected around Wellington as the leading keeper coach in the city.  He's also a great guy.

Perhaps the strongest testament to that is that he works across several "rival" camps and for several "rival" coaches in Wellington, because everyone likes him and values his work.

Why would we not want the Phoenix to pick up someone like that and use him?  Why would we want to go offshore?

Keepers having the position in the group that they do, you can be sure that if Paston and Warner weren't happy with Oatsy's work they would have told Ricki and there would have been a change.

So, turn that frown upside down...

Its easy enough to get senior goalkeeper coaching quals. Doesn't make them a top goalkeeping coach, i.e. me.
You also do need to have a separate coach to work the keepers. Doing it by themselves is very difficult no matter how experienced. Especially when they're competing for the same spot. You need a neutral set of eyes watching technique, positioning etc.

Its no longer a problem.

Not in NZ it's not.  Nothing is offered at the moment (at junior, youth or senior level)

I managed to get to level 2 youth easily enough and there are a few courses in Auckland over the summer I think.

Its no longer a problem.

Level 2 Youth is not a goalkeeping qualification.

I did the first one which I think was called Level 1, Junior. Then followed it up with Level 2, Youth. Will have to check exact terminology but it is pretty close to that.

Its no longer a problem.
