Mark Oates (Goal Keeper Coach)

Personally I think Warner and Paston are both still good enough at A-League level and that if they are both coached carefully then they will probably last a few more seasons. Getting a good goalkeeping coach is very difficult. Especially in NZ. Most have other jobs and can only do it part time, like Oatsey does. Until the Nix were born there was no such thing as a fully professional goalkeeping coach outside of the one spot at NZ Football. Hopefully next season will see someone from overseas brought in. Maybe to work with TW as well. Perhaps Mark will take the role full time. That would be good for NZ football particularly if he gets his UEFA/FIFA coaching badges (unsure what he currently has).

Its no longer a problem.

Becasue:
a) I can't see it happening this season, but it would be great if it did.
b) In my mind, there aren't any keeping coaches in NZ up to coaching A-League keepers on a full time basis. I hope I'm wrong though. Mark may be up to it but historically all NZ football goalkeeping coaches have been from overseas. Gosling may be the exception.

Its no longer a problem.

why beat up on kiwis here?  we've often produced good keepers so why wouldn't these guys be able to coach?  gosling is very highly regarded as is jason batty in the US.  he wasn't my cuppa as a keeper admittedly, but he's doing the job in the MLS.

it would be good to see that there is a valid career path for someone such as oatsey in nz

Exactly this.

And, as I mentioned in an earlier post, wouldn't you think he'd have been gotten rid of if either Tony Warner or Mark Paston didn't think he was doing a good job.

I hope they keep Oatsy.

Agree 100% and I genuinely hope Oatsey is good enough.
As far as Batty and Gosling go, they're overseas and have been for a long time, ergo my point above stands. No-one in New Zealand (Oatsey aside) has shown the ability to coach at this level because there haven't been the opportunities to do so. I'm sure with full time experience a few people could get to that level. But until that opportunity comes about any decent coach (Oatsey aside again) will have to come form overseas.
We have produced some great keepers but not all good technicians become good coaches. Conversely, you don't have to be a great technician to be a good coach. This point stands very strong here as most good keepers are a bit mental anyway.
Nothing against Oatsey, he was a decent Wgtn Prem keeper but is showing he can potentially coach well above what he played at. He has my vote to fill the full time keeper coaching spot if/when one is created.

Its no longer a problem.

Could you imagine Michael Utting as a goalkeeper coach?

Lovely guy, mad as a cut snake but it would be interesting to see how it goes considering his style was a little different. He did a fantastic job when he was on but even he would admit he was horrible when he was off. I would interested to find out if he is coaching or does anything like that (other than real estate)

Grumpy old bastard alert

He was at the Mar before confeds once and we did a few training sessions together. Mad as a meat axe but bloody effective in training and he raised my game 10 fold. Not sure he'd have the concentration to be a full-time coach though. A shame really. Really nice guy too.
