I am all for marketing to the chinese community, and every other community available (growing numbers of Indian fans in the UK, etc) but lets do it in English.

Well I never thought it could be possible, but the Yellow Fever forum has reached the depths only previously reached by the trade me message boards.

And from a veteran too, how embarassing.  Let's hope it's just a bit of trolling.

veteran??????

Taking an idea from Martinb a bit further (http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5046)

Has anyone thought about putting up some Yellow Fever (or WPFC - Tony P?) posters around the university Campuses or other venues in both Cantonese and Mandarin? Especially with Gao's name attached to them . . .

TBH one of the best ideas I have heard coming out of YF.

Phill take it a stage further ..............its easy............set up a meeting with some people at the uni ............to meet some of the students.

Have a frank exchange and ask if they want anything, eg food wise,.......and if they wished to help in any way they would be welcome.

Phill ...............you are on a winner................go for it hard and the pricks .........who talk about English and so on...............well .............fell sorry for them and tell them this is the world game.............not the english speaking game.

My hats off to ya Phill

Charming.  I was referring to the note underneath your name and not your age which you are obviously pretty sensitive about.  Why is that?  Balding up top or drooping down below? Hey, it happens to plenty of middle-aged men.

Another charming show from yellow fever's finest.

Although I seem to being painted as xenophobic, rascist little redneck on this thread, I agree with this completely.  I just don't understand why adverts have to be in manderin, which makes it a pointless advert for everyone else who sees it and doesn't understand that language.

some points I want to make:

  • I am all for targeting specific ethnic groups, and mentioned earlier that we should look at the indian community in Wellington as well.  There are increasing numbers of Indian fans at English games now (mainly because they feel safer) and I saw an interesting peice on TV yesterday about the Indian national team preparing for the SAFF Cup (south Asia football federation, I guessed) where there were big crowds, etc.  It would obviously help if we had an indian player, but just because we don't should we ignore a large group of potential fans????????
  • I went to some Fulham games when Inamoto was there, and although they (intelligently) used the fact that he was japanese to get the japanese community involved, I don't recall seeing signs or adverts in the language in or around the ground, or anything in japanese in the programme.  Maybe there were adverts in japanese in places that only japanese people go, but I didn't know where they were (I am not japanese) so I never went there.

Anyone who knows me understands that I am very racially tolerant - I was one of the few people at the start who argued that the greeks should be allowed to come to Phoenix games (as long as they sat somewhere else) which I think says a lot.

bottom line - putting phoenix adverts up around university, etc = good idea, putting phoenix adverts up around university advertising that there is a chinese player in the team, with the goal of attracting chinese people to come to the game = good idea, putting phoenix adverts up around university, etc in a language that only a small percentage of people who see it can understand = not so good idea.

Disclaimer - some of the above message may make no sense, and I can't be bothered to proof it.

So you've never found any advertising/ information that's been written in English in a non English speaking country to be helpful?

And when you say 'the language' which one do you mean? NZ has two official languages?

3 actually.

Why advertise when you could do it this way......If you know an asian person, bring them along with you at our first home game. If they enjoy themselves then  the word will get around. This could apply to any enthnesity.

And if you know a gay person, bring them along too!

The 'answer', Frankie, might be that advertising works less effectively on trying to appeal to every man and his dog. The sense in Phil Style's suggestion is simply that a specific audience is being targetted in a way that communication may be highly effective.

Think Tui adverts: 8 word slogans aimed at Tui drinkers. Works a treat, because it's in their 'language' (although I am not meaning New Zild English).

Cantonese/Mandarin etc aimed at Chinese Football fans might also be a winner: it is far from an outrageous suggestion, despite your rather reactionary stance.

Why stop at Chinese? Beacuse the idea is to use a Chinese player to connect wth a potential market that might not currently be tapped - the Chinese ethnic community. If we signed an italian player, perhaps we would advertise to the Italian community. . .  I'm sure if the Brazilian community in NZ was larger we might see some Brazialian targetting of Daniel. . . .

"I wouldn't expect adverts in English because the local Mahjongg team has got a player from America"

Of course not, I'm not suggesting in any way that the Chinese community EXPECTS this. I'm just suggesting it as a potential tool.

If a Mahjongg team fails to capitalise on a potential market that's their problem. However, if a Kiwi was playing in a team in say - Egypt and I was there for the weekend and saw a sign in English with his picture or something I might go out of my way to go see the game . . .

Someone may have already said this but the reason we signed a Chinese player was not "to connect with a potential market" it was because he is good at playing football and that is what you(well atleast I) would look for in a football signing.

The marketing comes after the signing (which was, presumably, base on the ability of Gao), so what is wrong with that?

Of course. But given that we have signed a Chinese player, wouldn't you want to use that asset as well as you could, whether it be on or off the field?

Agree with Arsenal - we want to make the most out of every signing, I'm sure if we'd just signed an African star we'd be pushing for the NZ/African community to be marketed to. Good idea to hit the Chinese papers, why wouldn't you want one of the biggest populations to tap into the Phoenix.

I asume Daniel that you fully endorse the quality of the !@#$%^  served up at the stadium as a cheap, filling and healthy substance? Frankly speaking I'd encourage any of the food court shops to take over the areas of the Wellington Stadium where there currently resides substandard catering.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
