Surely some of the 'lesser' national teams have a standout player
who could be snapped up on the cheap.
I'd be in for signing somebody from Cape Verde or Panama. Will be
reminiscent of the old days of Championship Manager when I'd sign
people on crazy nationality rather than actual talent.
Not a fan of Milton Rodriguez ,is he marquee player? I don't think
a marquee player is needed. Its really hard to find a 'big' name
that would come. Romario was way over the hill and way to much to
pay for someone who was basically invisible on the pitch. Yorke was
good but Wellington is no Sydney and a lot of cash is needed.
It would be good to look to Africa for players, physically there are some amazing players, pure speed and strength, and all u need is a little bit of technical skill. Only problem would be Work Permit, not sure what the rules are for foreign players in the A League and NZ employment laws.

what about some greek talent? quite a few greek connections with
the club (owner etc) and they seem to have done well in the last
few years in europe as well.
Would be interesting to keep an eye on Elliot now with Fulhams new
manager coming in if he is kept at the end of the season.
We don't have enough nightclubs in Wellington for Kluivert...or enough charlie.
If we get a marquee player they genuinely have to be a
household name outside of football circles, thats the only way you
get real value for marketing purposes

We might as well sign Rod Stewart or Elton John then - they
are both household names connected to football.
kluivert is married, his wife is a supermodel! he dont need any
charlie!

If you are coming to play professional football a work permit in NZ isn't a problem, you have guaranteed employment and after two years you can apply for residency (at least three of the Knights English players are close now).
A-League rules mean we can have 4 import players. For us that is anyone who is not Australian or a New Zealander. For the other A-League sides New Zealanders count in the 4 import total.
Incidentally, nice to see in the news that Perth are keeping Plodder... YAY !
thanks Mod. See the story on Robbie Fowler coming to the A-League
that would be awesome, Sydney have reported to be trying to sign
him, probably won't happen though.
What about 'God flying with the Phoenix'.
What about 'God flying with the Phoenix'.
From memory what the article said is that his name has been
discussed in the Sydney boardroom - here it is:
Hard News2007-04-16 15:41:25
He's been discussed at board room level and it shows just how
determined we are to set the benchmarks in Australian football that
we are serious about targeting a player of his calibre," said
Perry.

If Sydney have the $'s and Robbie is inclined, it'd be great for
A-League if Robbie did come.
It would be great to see him have a final swansong. He should have had an outstanding career but circumstances have conspired against him somewhat.
I'm convinced he can still do a great job for someone but whether that's at Sydney, LFC or even in the Prem remains to be seen.

That didn't seem to be the case in Newcastle...
Anyhow, there seems to me to be a bigger issue than just the
identity of the player...more along the lines of what are we hoping
to achieve with a marcquee player. Are we looking purely for
someone based on footballing ability, in which case we really can
spread the net reasonably far, or are we looking for someone to
also increase the profile of the club? Sydney were lucky in
that Dwight Yorke helped them achieve both. Adelaide only
broke even on Romario despite his profile and they, and he, were
rubbish when he played. That can hardly be considered a
success.
I think for the Phoenix to justify a marquee salary
a player has to contribute both on and off the field and if that
doesn't look likely then I say don't go for it. And there
really aren't a whole lot of (achievable) targets out there I can
see considering that Terry S, while turning decent wedge, doesn't
have bottomless pockets.

Normo's coming home
I agree with J.Dean
If the Phoenix can get a marquee player that suits the team
then sweet. i don't think we should sweat it if we don't get a big
name signing.
I'd rather they concentrate on playing as a team rather than
relying on one player who may only be in it for the money.
Dunno if you would get him as a marquee but a definite attempt
should be made to bring Vicelich home.
well he'd nned to play a lot better than he did for the AWs to
even get on the field
Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet
It sounded like Rikki was talking to some Chileans and
Brazilians. Not sure how true that is?
Not bad if we can convert a few to the All Whites.
Danny and I have found our mystery Argentinean Chilean:
Pablo Manuel Galdames Daz - Goes by the name Pablo Galdames.
32yo - 22 caps for Chile. Former clubs include Cruz Azul (Mexico), Quilmes and Racing (Argentina) and America(Colombia). Plays as a central midfielder.

Haha.. the last time me and Danny went through that looking for Marcina we announced a Jimmy Smith or someone
As much as I'd hate to steal Leeds' better players, what about
David Healey? He's showed he can score goals at international level
for Northern Ireland, and considered the best player outside the
premiership.
Ricki should look for a marquee player in the french league where
there are many extremely talented african players.
If hes looking for a creative player he should also look at his free kick strength. After last years free kick takers were bad. Malik Buari always hit the first man.
