I don't think the captain has been announced yet.
Also, can someone confirm the MyFootball YouTube channel is showing games again this season to audiences outside of NZ and Oz?

Maybe I've missed this but... Who the hell is our captain? Payne? Ball?

Talay said last week he was still deciding.

Rufer!? And Sail as vice!?! Didn’t see that coming.

Rufer was a given IMO.

Sail out of left field.

Has Rufer improved aspects of his game? Are he and Clayton working better together? Does Pennington or Prso threaten Lewis’ place, so we might see Rufer and one of them?
Rufer is a strong Phoenix man, just what we need this season and Sail is an example to the young guys of how hard work, patience and determination can pay off.
A leadership team for this season.

I actually quite like this. The comment section on facebook for the club's announcement is a pit of negativity and Rufer-bashing but I genuinely think it's good. He's been here for an absolute age, he's Kiwi, a product of the academy and is a genuine fan of the club. He's old enough that he would be a respected leader in the dressing room, and young enough that he would still be able to relate to the horde of young kids coming through from the academy. There are many things that Rufer isn't, but he'll always be the most committed guy on the park. Who knows, it might make him a better player too

all of those things are great qualities and you're right Rufer's commitment to the club/team cannot be questioned. But, the question needs to be asked. Does the captain have to be in your starting XI every week. If not, then on previous years form and ability, Rufer is as good a name to be capt. If the capt needs to be a starter then we have to assume that Rufer will be starting most weeks or else why not just make Sail the captain as he is clearly the #1 in his position.

The APL has stopped the Incs and Outs + Ref's appointments (for the moment at least). So no idea what Ref we have been assigned.

They just released the info, I think they just misread the room about how useful it is.

Disagree, has been much better, particularly considering the general mess post COVID

Super excited for the new season! Although must say I have a bad feeling we will not even be close to pushing for a finals spot unless there are some decent signings in the new year.

Really lacking experience especially in midfield and the back. Plus no home games for a while.

Happy to be proved wrong though.

In Uffie we trust!

I think we'll go alright, good indicator of where we're at against Macarthur first up as they've been pretty woeful in pre season - shipping goals and then losing Federici & Milligan.

That being said, pre season doesn't count for much when that whistle goes on Sunday.

Nix for the win first up 2-1. Waineo and Ball to get us on board and kickstart our campaign. 🟡⚫ COYN! ⚫🟡

I support many clubs around the world and have lived in many countries, and engage in many active fan groups like this one, the optimism and positivity nix fans have is infectious and wonderful regardless of the circumstances , most other fans will be like “well were doomed for relegation” if they had as many big outs as we had, non the less, our faith in the manager and in the team is unique regardless of circumstances. I think it’s very much a kiwi attitude to thing =) i hope this is never lost

70mm of rain forecast for Newcastle on Sunday and we are the second game. The pitch is pretty good there now, hopefully it holds up.

Terrible conditions to start the season in. 2nd game on a sodden pitch. But this may play into our hands as it might nullify Uli’s ability to dribble.

Well, there's one benefit of a closed league right there

We can lose every game and still be in the A-League next year

I'd have thought Ball, a 90 minute man with a good thinking ability.

Two questions, does he start even through poor form only because he is the Captain?

Oli will be Captain during the games Rufer is suspended? Not taking into account, poor form or injury to the "Official" Captain.

Wow. I read that apparently no one has checked on this pitch for months. If that's not a new low then I don't know what is. 9 months to get the pitch in order. First game of the new season. Thats below amateur even for A-League standards. This cannot be coincidence, someone must be having a laugh.

Another example of why most clubs need to build and manage their own grounds. That has got to be the ultimate goal of any professional club with ambitions. See MLS as an example. Until then, the code will continue to be a joke and no broadcast deal will save it.

As for Sundays game: GO THE NIX

Peak A-League!

At the same time, that's just farcical. I couldn't  imagine West Tigers rocking up on an opening weekend in the NRL and being greeted with that nonsense. There would be outrage, heads would roll, there would be blood.

Exactly! I was thinking the same thing. How is it they get away with something like that? Shows what push overs A-League clubs are. Man that is so weak

We need to talk about... YouTube!
Has anyone managed to watch any games this weekend on the MyFootball YouTube channel? It sounds like they aren't showing A-League games outside of NZ, Aus and selected countries any longer which is a travesty! I can only imagine how dodgy any streams would be like... Really don't want to have to go down that path..

“They have some good names on paper, but at the end of the day paper doesn’t move,” Talay said.

I've always preferred the old - Paper players win paper cups.

Typical Uffie comment though, unflappable and as witty as ever.
