Apologies to OOE as I know this is his usual thread, but I need to vent my anger out.

Moss - 8 - 1 person, 1 point. Kept us in the game
Mulligan - 4 - Mr long ball @ hotmail.com
Durante - 5 Some nice moves, some terrible.
Mckain - 4 You hardly notice him
Lochhead- 5 Nothing really to note.
Hearfield - 5 See above
Johson - 1 Out of position. Stupid fowls. Cant pass. No creativity.
Dodd - 0 See above - but worse.
Daniel - 6 - At least he tries something. CM please
Covs - 5 - Lack of supply to him + smeltz. Isolated.
Smeltz - 5 - . See above.

Siggy - 8 - Grunt and a passion to get to the ball first, not seen in the other players. Start him.
Gao - 7 - Wow. A player creating something in a nix shirt.

Herbert - 1 - Another sh*t tactical game and substitute decision

I'd bump Mossy up to 9 and possibly Smeltz to 6. Apart from that i agree wholeheartedly.

Three for me, and two for them.

I think you're underrating some of the defeners slightly but I agree on most points. As for Herbet he's only had 3 days with the team so we can't be too harsh with him.

yeah, id probably move moss up to 9, mulligan down to 1, johnson and dodd possibly a fraction higher (but broadly I agree)

and, yes, dumbfounded by the substitutions. first of all, we were truly awful in the first half. he had to make some changes earlier. Second, how on earth did mulligan get to stay on the pitch and in fact get pushed into a forward position while both daniel and hearfield got dragged?

if we are going to play long ball, then i wish we'd just get on and admit it and structure our team accordingly. id rather that, than continuing to pretend we are a passing team, but bc we dont have any midfielders who can pass or live on the ball, just bombing it forward aimlessly.

Pretty desperate stuff again.  Will someone please tell Daniel that those stupid flicks and backheels are absolutely f**king useless and incredibly irritating.

I'm used to Ricki's strange substitutions now. They seem to fly in the face of common sense every week.

Was Dodd really so bad? I thought he was pretty tenacious there in the midfield, plus he put together a couple of decent moves which seem to have been ignored. Mulligan disappointed me because he started so well then tailed off so badly. Every meaningful move by CCM was down his wing.

Hearfield did nothing. Not happy with him at all.

Some positives, though not many.

Moss was superb, but still worry that he does not command the back four, at one point in the second half he was calling for a wall and never got one he was far too gentlemanly.

Thought Sigmund looked solid in the short spell he was on.

Great to see Brown get a run but to be honest he should have got more than 5 minutes Johnson was dropping into the back four and Dodd was running around headless and to be honest if we want to play football through the midfield then Johnson and Dodd is not the combination, you would have thought this was blindingly obvious!!

Gao looked energetic when he came on, however should have came on for Coveny not Daniel, Coveny had gone in the second half.

Dodd ran his arse off. Very unfair to him. Atleast 6. Did a better job than Ferrante. Moss 10.

Daniel 3, he 's an off-the-bench player. Gao should've started. Daniel's lazyness gave them a couple of chances.

I also don't think you can be to harsh on them. It was a fairish draw. Both side had their chances both sides had there mistakes.Michael2008-09-14 20:33:51

Actually agree with most of this especially in the first half. Totally agree with Siggy being an 8.

Oh and Fever what a 3? (I include myself in this).

Wolfben, what game were you at?
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I stayed to the end thank you. thought the game was a lot better than the last one so least we are going in the right direction.

I was hopping for a 6-nil win to push up into 4th spot but happy with a draw and its better than a loss.

You have to be taking the piss Daniel a 6.Just what he did to out rate others i dont get.Flashy skills are worth sh*t if you dont do anything with the ball.Failed to track back a number of times, struggled to get wide at others when we were pushing forward.Just dont get the love affair everyone has with him over others.

I disagree - Dodd looks like someone out of the their league who tries hard and runs a lot but offers nothing else, and constantly is caught out...good CD but not CM

I couldn't agree more about the logic of starting with Johnson and Dodd, that was basically saying to CCM that we won't be attacking through the middle, and will rely solely on the flanks ad the long ball. Not terribly difficult to defend...as was proved...

I'm not sure you can say it was a fair draw, saw them create plenty more clear cut chances than we did, in fact i'm battling to remember one decent chance we had (i'll admit to flicking between us and the Warriors nearer the end of the Nix game)

Moss was obviously the standout, dont get too many goalies putting their hand up to play in goal for the Phoenix I should think.

Smeltz was good when he got the ball, but had no service at all.

After this I thought Dodd was as good as anyone, knocked the ball about quite well.

The defence looked shakey right from the first minute, God knows how they kept a clean sheet.

Coveny just isnt the man for the job I dont think, he's quick, but not good enough in the air by a long way and his touch isnt good enough to enable him to hold the ball up to build attacks.

Someone tell me why pushing Mulligan forward and taking Daniel off was going to win the game.

And why, when we have a decent free kick in the oppo half with less than 10 to go, do we just put two players in the box? Incredibly negative, cant believe it, aint going to win no league with home draws.

Gotta admit, from my vantage point in the press box I noticed we were a bit quiet in the second half.

To be fair though, there wasn't anything much to draw inspiration from on the pitch - very scrappy game

Ricki said at the press conference that they kept Mulligan on as he is able to cross from deep, and get the ball forward.

We were lucky, very lucky!! Thanks Mossy, I don't know how you did it!
The boys must have been told to lump it long!! Then why wasn't someone feeding off Cov's knock downs?
I agree with most of whats been said before. Mully and Locky both poor.
Johnno having to cover in defence tells its own story, thank Goodness he does.
We need a Jonas Salley.

Just got back up to Palmy from the match. In agreement of much of what has been said, Mossy the standout, but otherwise not much to write home about. I wonder what effect swapping Dodd and McKain would have... we really need some better building from the back as per last season. Also feel playing Smeltz and Covs together is not a smart move... they just don't seem to play well off each other

I thought I was having flash backs to the good old days of the NZ Knights.
Get that ball and treat it like a hot potato, kick long and wait as it will be coming back to you real quick.
Long ball and sitting to deep just like the days of the Knights.
To the Phoenix players at least you gave it 100 % compared to the Adelaide game.
I went and watched  Perth V Roar and I'm telling you now if you continue to play the way you are Perth WILL beat you.I really hope not but there isn't anything that I've seen over the last two games that can convince me otherwise.
Man I hope that I'm wrong.
Anyway it is nice to be off the bottom of the table.
YF were very very quite and the crowd numbers are a little concerning though as some of you have said the rugby team is winning so those that sit on the fence will go there first.

I think we need someone in the central midfield who can pass and has some creativity. Daniel and Gao would be worth a try but they both drift in and out and dive a bit so it would be a gamble. When was the last time the phoenix scored from a good passing move and not a cross?

I think both these ideas have a lot of merit. Also, I think it's clear that Coveny's not a 90 minute player anymore.

Don't have to say much when our goalie is rated the top player. CCM should have clearly won that game. Sad to say.
Long bombs an hope seems to be the tactic. I don't know what Rickie is playing at, but we'll be lucky to win anything any time soon.

Sure hope I'm wrong!

sigmund was fantastic when he came on , he wanted everything , showed some passion and heart , and also looked to have a bit of hunger , dodd was unimpressive i thought he tried hard, but not at all a holding midfielder. just dissapointing all in all , but like most of us i suppose i,ll be there next home game , just try and stop me ...........

Herbert - 1 - Another sh*t tactical game and substitute decision

I think you're underrating some of the defeners slightly but I agree on most points. As for Herbet he's only had 3 days with the team so we can't be too harsh with him.

What sort of excuse its this for him getting a "1". He's had all season!

Mulligan - $hite long ball merchant. Siggy was 100%. Give him the job, he's young and has passion and talent.
Dodds - out of position, he's a central defender, end of. Don't make him look bad by playing him out of position. He's better than that.
Daniel - a liability. Can't tackle, can't header, loses possesion in critical areas.

Herbert waited far too long to make changes that were begging to be made. Why? Inability to quickly identify problems and act on them.

Suggestions -
Young Costa B. on the bench for 25 mnutes each game to take tiring defenders on .
Daniel ... past his best, he's now a liability. Maybe 25 minutes late in a game tops.
Mulligan - His long balls are net hier accurate nor effectinve. Was crap against NC too, that was a warning sign to me that he's not up to A league standard.
Lochy - give him a week off, he's jaded.
Smeltz - draw a line on the field and tell him not to encroach it. This may encourage the rest of the midfield to do their job properly instead of Smeltzy defending so deeply (to his credit of course).
Brown - get him fitter so he's not half a metre too slow (a sure fire yellow carder). If fit he's the man to enfoce the middle
Gao - gotta start

Conclusion - A creative midfielder would be nice but not tangible right  now, so perhaps Herbert could wake up to what seems glaringly obvious to most of us with what he's already got available.

He's lucky to get the "1"

Agree on Costa, think you're harsh on Daniel. Brown was abysmal against New Caledonia, and if couldn't operate effectively in that game where he had sh*tloads of time and space, can't see how he can operate effectively at the A-league level right now. Not saying that he can't pick up his game as he gets fitter, but he's clearly not the answer at this point.
I would put Dodd back at CB, and push McKain into midfield. McKain is more comfortable on the ball than pretty much all of our centre mids, so why not give him a go there given how things have been panning out lately. I'd also start Gao as well, he's one guy who seems to have a bit of creativity in the attacking third.
Finally, I'd say that adding another good striker is an absolute must if we are not to become a laughing stock this season.
