Matthew Thompson - Loser

"When a player can sit out there at wide right and get a free role it makes it hard on defenders having to defend him when he doesn't do much in defence in all fairness. I don't think he'd be very tired after that game," Thompson said. "Hat's off to the Wellington back six because they're definitely overworked and they put a great effort in today in holding us out. - Matthew Thompson, Newcastle Jets skipper.

Learn to lose with some dignity. Your ragged a*se team missed chance after chance after chance and if Ifill is so woeful - as you allege - why couldn't you and your team of jet propulsed princesses stump up a performance to nullify him?

And who cares that your team was injured - your coach thinks everyone in the A-League is "sh*t" anyway which makes the Newcastle Jets look like broken sh*t.

Enjoy your time off - you're not good enough to go to the finals - or the World Cup. Matthew.

Bit of a prick. In all fairness Muscat does often play quite deep but I would never say we play a back 6.

AS for him complaining about Ifill not getting back, wtf? Thats something we as fans should complain about. Surely that would only be helping the jets. What a sore loser. What a way to leave you club.

I was contemplating supporting the Heart next season, and have been a fan of Thompson, but  after hearing him more recently then forget it, MATE.

Hah, back six. We might play like we have that but its really only three, Reddy , Dura nd Siggy, cos the other backs are up on attack!

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

a back six in a team that still managed to knock in three goals? hmmm, at least that's better than the Jet's back 0, obviously.

Unless I've missed something in the above statement he doesn't actually claim Ifill is woeful. Just states Ifill doesn't come back often which is sorta true compared to some of the other lads.

To be honest he was pretty much right on the money about Ifill not tracking back (he actually does more now, but mostly out of necessity because our defence was a shambles)

There was a pretty funny clip when Durante and McKain got called up to the Socceroos in early 2010 and Matt Thompson was teaching them the Australian national anthem and other Australian things.

so thread could be edited to Socceroo Matt Thompson?

He's more of a box-to-box midfielder than a defensive mid?

From this article http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/9093267/Costa-Rican-duo-raring-to-go-for-the-Phoenix

Meanwhile, Merrick has decided not to offer a contract to former Melbourne Heart midfielder Matt Thompson. The 31-year-old impressed Merrick during pre-season games last week but he wants to add a defensive midfielder to the mix, not an attacking one.

''I rate him very highly but in this situation we'll pass,'' Merrick said.

''There's lots of quality going forward but we don't have the same stocks of defensive play in midfield.

"I'm looking at opportunities to bring on some youngsters. Justin Gulley impressed there, so did Tobias Bertsch and so has Michael Boxall at training.''

This is probably the first decision if Ernie's I have outright disagreed with. It's his head not mine and I guess my signature applies

I back Ernie on this one.
I always thought Thompson was a DM - but reading his comments about his time at Heart, he said he wasn't comfortable playing there and was more of an attacking player.

We are clearly after a deeper player- and Ernie clearly states he wants a DM not an AM - which Thompson thinks he is.

Seemed kind more like a tim brown type AM/CM to make runs and get on the end of things / not terribly creative, yet not really a DM

Permalink Permalink

Disappointed. Feel like he may have been the missing piece but have to back Ernie's assessment I guess.

If we didn't have Lia and Manny, he would've been signed up in an instant imo. Ernie has always been a big fan. I back him on this decision though - don't think Thompson will make us a much better team; would rather give opporunities to Kiwi kids and leave a spot open for a import DM.

Same here. Not a single fcuk is given that he wasn't signed.
