I really can't see any of them coming to the Phoenix, unless the Guest Appearance is worth around $500,000 or whatever astronomic sum footballers earn these daysInter rocks2007-10-31 22:38:42

How anyone could suggest this is the most stupid thread when one of them is about Phoenix fridge magnets I don't know!

as soon as you join a thread, it pretty much guarantees stupid

In "About YF" you are described as the comic relief.  Are you like Trevor Mallard, good at giving it but can't take it?  It's a wind-up pal - lighten up.

Cheap shot - Not nice comparing anyone to the Duck himself. He's still spewing that the Trevor Mallard Stadium isn't being built on the Auckland waterfront. And don't mention the marriage break up or he'll step you out!

The fridge magnet dillemma is based on fact - and is a concern for many many fans.
Unless whoever started this is willing to call Jappa and get turned down - then this is all bs

I just assumed that wind-ups were supposed to be amusing.

I also have a grave concern that a lot of people on this forum genuinely think that getting a guy who played top level at his peak over 5 years ago, and who has admitted that he is past it, is a better option than trying to develop young players.  That is before we even start talking about wages, etc.

You guys want/need a defender who:

a). is accessible
b). has experience at International level
c). is affordable
d). will give you EVERYTHING for the jersey
e). is actually very bloody good

The solution:  Ben Sigmund

Why has this guy been overlooked?

We can't sign him, even if we wanted to. As Dr Quack has pointed out, several times:

"Sigmund can't be signed because he has played for 2 teams within a calendar year of July-June"

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Again I say do we want a short term repair job or a long term fix? For each crap performance our current defence have. Hopefully they will learn from the experience. Looking at their ages, there is a bright future.

Having said that, 1 million for a Beckham one off or 500k for 5-7 appearances by a top name "guest" defender? To be honext, I'd grab the 5-7 appearances because if the name guest was a big name, fan attendances would be up for starters.

Sorry to be serious in a fun thread but I've made some points to think about.

In keeping with the serious theme:

I agree that the future is rosy. But forget the future for a moment, brecause we have a problem in the present. The problem is that NOW, in this season, our young defenders are not performing well enough (and dont get me wrong, I am a Steven Old fan - most of the time).
We cant afford to be teaching lessons to kids when we need to be winning games.

The spin-offs from getting Golden Balls are far reacing, and I understand the commercial reasons for spending that cash.
However, I agree, we need to get someone to plug the gaping holes in our defence.

So why cant we do both of these?

Buy out the contracts of a couple of midfielders (I'm not close enough to know who should go and who shouldnt) and spend a bit extra on a quality defender - maybe even 500k on 6 or 7 appearences as suggested.
We know Tony has the $$ - maybe it's becoming clear that now we need it more than ever.

Finishing last in this league would be a disaster for the Nix, and Football in New Zealand.

Rant over...

It only became a 'fun' (as in desperate humour in order to stay sane) thread because the initial suggestion was so ludicrous.

now that you've changed the focus it remains moderately pointless as one option has already been chosen

however, i'll attempt to treat it seriously - In my view Beckham will raise the profile of the club more than the other option - because the club has already won over most of the region's football fans, so the focus with Beckham is almost certainly to give a broader range of people an experience of NIX/YF delight

Beckham will also be more of a draw card to an international sponsor (even for 1 game) than would a moderately well known ex-prem type centre back

for example TVNZ wouldn't see any of the names in this thread as a good enough reason to televise a friendly live

tigers, you are assuming the only 'goal' of this excercise is to boost the profile of the Club. While this is obvisously a high priority, the highest priority is to WIN GAMES.
Beckham will not help us do that. We will not get on TV, nor will we obtain a major sponsor if we
are not winning more games than we are losing (as stated previously, I understand why they spent $$ on Beckham, and agree with the concept).

You also suggest that we can choose one and not the other (Beckham OR a name defender). I dont think this is the case - why cant we do both?
There are two potential road blocks here:

1). Money - we know that the Club has access to this, so not a large issue.
2). Are we allowed to sign a marquee defender? (Does Elrich count as our only marquee - I dont know the rules here...)

Just my thoughts...

fair points, I was responding to Lonegunmen's focus which was about a choice between two options and focussed on crowd numbers etc

as you note, in theory we could do both ( ie Becks and a guest player) as a guest player can play alongside the (one allowable) marquee

tough question about results v profile

I'd rather see the results (hence my worry about injuries - noted on other Beckham topics) but if Terry and Tony raise the profile the club will have more dosh for future Marquees and guests etc -which in theory improves results

Fair points Tiger. Might I suggest If TVNZ had had the rights to the Rugby, this game would not hae had a lookin. I notice TVNZ recently showing hockey finals foir the first time in over 10 years! As well as heaps of motor sport.

Still the game is happening and I hope for the Nix, it is completely successful. I hope too we can get the defence sorted.
