Really? Greenacre we signed early on, Ifill came here as the last resort, and Greenacre's mate came here, played a pre-season game and took off pretty quickly. That's the only 3 players from the English lower divisions (with no NZ/Australian background) that have linked up with the Nix in some way. These kind of players basically see the A-league itself as the very last resort, and there's more appealing destinations in the league than Wellington at any rate.
Yet we think we'd have heaps of lower league players willing to pay (and presumably cover all their expenses while at it) to travel around the world just to trial with the Phoenix? Really?
I agree with you, but I think the idea is to hold a trial in the UK. still, i'm not buying that on contract League 1/2 players would want to pay for a trial for a club on the other side of the world.
Hmm, from the tone of some of the discussion here I got the impression that the talk was of holding such a trial here, which makes no sense to me at all.
If it were to be held in the UK, it would make marginally more sense - it could potentially offset the cost of the travel to the UK for the Nix staff (since presumably they're looking to go there at any rate to do some scouting) if enough people were interested. I agree with your thinking that decent players at that level would not be interested in paying to trial with a club from NZ they'd never heard of. But if 20 or so guys from the conference or so paid their share to trial, it could at least help with the travel cost, which in current circumstances is not something to scoff at. But overall think it's more hassle than its worth.

Again, if you don't lose any money it doesn't actually matter whether you sign someone or not.

Crawley was on the books of Motherwell early in his career

Two players who were among 39 each paying 200 for a trial have been successful in winning professional contracts with Stirling Albion.
And goalkeeper Sam Filler and defender John Crawley could make their debuts as Highland League club Deveronvale play in the Ramsdens Cup for the first time.
Leeds-born Filler, 20, is currently a student at Stirling University.
Glasgow-born Crawley, 24, has returned from a football scholarship at the University of Nevada.
Both have previous senior experience.
Crawley was once on the books of Motherwell, while Filler was with Middlesbrough and Bradford City.
The pair impressed Stirling's management team of Jocky Scott and John Blackley as part of the "So You Think You're Good Enough" trial that involved six weeks of intense training and five matches.
Manager Scott told the Second Division club's website: "Both Sam and John have earned their contracts and I'm pleased to have them in the squad for the coming season.
"They are not here to make up the numbers and they know that I expect them to be competing for a starting position every week.
"My thanks go out to everyone that took part in this trial.
"From the first day right through to the final cut against Cliftonville last Saturday everyone who took part showed a commitment to succeed that was admirable."
Crawley and Filler were just two of several players handed contracts this week by the club relegated from Division One and now owned by their fans.
Former Dumbarton midfielder Alan Cook was given a six-month contract, former Stenhousemuir defender Gary Thom agreed a one-year deal, while midfielder Gavin Macpherson signed for two years.
Two former members of Stirling's Under-19 squad, Andy Hunter and Daly McSorley, also signed two-year contracts.
