I have seen Basalaj a couple of times at youth level and he went pretty well but this is probably a good move. He just has more experience and more likely to be confident which is extremely important with a rejigged defence. What do others think?

I think Scott should be starting fullstop. Competent keeper and deserves it after working hard all preseason. Seems pretty unfair if he can't start

We already have a weakened team and should take the best keeper we can get. I don't think that is being unfair.

If he is that is good. I don't know, I haven't seen enough of either to make an informed decision. It was the comment about working hard and not getting a start being unfair that I disagreed with. But Greenie sounds like he is seriously considering (I would say even favoring) Spoonely to start.

From what I saw of Spoonley a couple of months ago he was commanding and confident but his distribution was lacking. His clearances seemed to be of a kick and hope someone would get to it nature.

Scott should be starting IMO. He is just as capable as Spoonley but from what I have seen has better distribution. He reminds me a lot of Jake Gleeson just before he signed with Timbers.

A great stopper, but terrible feet...a worry if they are playing out from the back.
Also concerned about set pieces, not so good in a clustered penalty box.
Scott maybe not quite ready but his time will come.

Because they'd be really happy if it happened to them and all. Actually, it wouldn't happen to them I suspect, because the FFA would probably postpone it for them.

Any other league in the world, and the game would be postponed. When you're only allowed a squad of 22 players, that is about one third of the squad out with international duty, not to mention injuries which takes it up to HALF the squad being unavailable. yet the game goes ahead and we're called whiners?

 Yeah you'd think that after the Knights, the Fury, the Serepisos saga, GCU, Jets almost pulling out, millions of dollars of gate takings from previous seasons... that FFA would be a tad more generous and willing to help everyone out. But instead theyre an absolute bunch of muppets. There wouldnt be a single football governing body anywhere else in the world that would make this game go ahead.

Makes you wonder whats next...

This shows what the FFA really think of the Nix. At the moment they need us as: 1: 10 teams are needed to have a plausible competition 2: We are well run and on a solid financial footing now (unlike many of the other teams) 3: They can access a market of 4 million 4: For our home games, it gives them one more time slot on fox They sure as heck however don't want us winning this competition This decision shows they will put up whatever roadblocks they have at their disposal to make sure it does not happen

I agree, it's a stupid and unfair decision by FFA but to say they are deliberately putting up roadblocks to stop us winning the league is absurd. Hopefully the club will work hard to get an assurance from FFA that this situation wont be repeated in future.

I'm pretty sure Basalaj not getting promoted for one game won't completely undermine the school of excellence programme. Especially when two of the initial intake got pro contracts within a few months, and at least a couple of others will play in this game anyway.

Reading an article earlier on this evening (might have been a FFA one) Gould was saying that Basalaj had lost 6kgs in 3 weeks since being back from India because of some virus. Could explain why Spoonley may start ahead of him.

What I'm saying is that if you can still be back up for the Phoenix playing in the ASB Prem why would you join the centre of excellence?

I think signing the 2 young guys is great - but that could have happened without COE - it's what the youth spots should have been used for anyway.  Personally I think the success of the programme has to be how many of those who are in it now end up with professional contracts next year and/or the year after.

Unless he's not fit (which it seems he may not be), I think you just have to play him

Once the FFA get a knock out cup competition up and running, I can see that happening during FIFA windows. It would probably be a compromise, we get the international breaks, so wouldn't be a part of the cup competition.
