Don't get me wrong. I love him. But only for the Country.
His comments the other week showed that he was done with us. So ive washed my hands of him in the A-league.

His comments the other week were the main reason for this.
Sorry you have been caught up in the  hype like so many others. His comments were made to a local paper,so what you all expected him to give us big wraps.

He was and still is our best goal scorer and attempts to diminish that are crap.Would i have him back You bet.Just imagine him on the end of some what we have know.

So we should treat comments made to a local rag differntly from those made to national rag or major website?

^ this.

I think he's got the brains to realise that his comments were gonna make their way over here

Need to send a copy of the article with the shirt to make the linkage clear.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I may be missing something here, but what is the point of sending that shirt to GCU Headquarters etc? I mean making the finals and doing better than GCU is enough as it is. Why do we have to act like petulant little kids sending anothers shirt back to them with obscenities all over it? I will only make us as supporters look like idiots. Correct me if I am wrong but has anyone sent us a phoenix shirt with all all over it etc?

Shirt idea .. very funny and no prob with that. But was the writing of the slogans the cartharsis?? They are v gud but is it essential to actually send the shirt?

Still, it's the shirt off Stefan's back afterall ...

Horus, this is a direct reaction to a quote from Gold Coast Striker who said that we didn't have the quality to win the league, even though his side is rubbish.

It also has messages of love to Moron and Clive because they need love at a time like this.

Dear Shane, you can give back some of your 30 pieces of silver for a ticket against the Jets on the 7th.

Or have you spent it shopping?

He probably would but he'd have to ask the missus first if he's allowed.

Good times, its like giving Becks the 'who are ya!?'.  I imagine it will be received as intended, and the very fact we're sending it shows Smeltzy is still in our hearts.

I'd have Smeltzy back anyday but not at the expense of anyone in the currant Squad.

face it smeltzy WAS our best player, he no longer is.....he made some arrogant comments after losing and not scoring against us about how our style (which was his style) would not win finals footy - seems he was wrong, so he deservers all we dish out.

I'm with you - I think we should hang onto it as a piece of Nix history, and to remind other players what we could do if they choose to upset us bwahahahaha!

I think this post from another thread is absolutely spot on

Perennial strugglers Liverpoolfan1 wrote:

For a start, look at the way the article is written.  It's deliberately inflammatory.

For example...

"I watched the game again and Anderson was booked when he didn't even connect and was on the receiving end of a kick himself," scoffed Smeltz.

"...scoffed Smeltz"?  That's not a quote, that's editorial.

"Smeltz's dissatisfaction with Breeze -- a police prosecutor in his other life -- stems back to his send-off against Central Coast on September 20 for dissent."

How does the writer know his dissatisfaction stems from that? And what on earth is the relevance of what Matthew Breeze does outside football?

If you look back the match thread on here you'll see that opinion was very much divided over whether it was a penalty or not; in fact, the majority probably thought it wasn't, especially on a second look.  But when Smeltz expresses that opinion, suddenly he's a dickhead, a knob and most incredibly, he should be benched against Mexico!  Grow up.  And the idea theres going to be some sort of malice towards him by Brown, Sigmund and Bertos when they get together for the Mexico game is just ludicrous.  These guys have known each other for years; a couple of comments in the press arent even going to register, apart from them giving him a bit of good-natured sh*t about them.

As for the stuff about Smeltz being cocky and unapproachableIm just staggered.  I saw Shane Smeltz pose for more photos and sign more autographs during his time here with the Phoenix and All Whites than just about any other player.  He was always the one people wanted, and I never saw him refuse a request.  Maybe others had a different experience, but thats what I remember.

Ill admit his comments about the Phoenixs style in the very last sentence could probably have been phrased better.  But the character assassination thats gone on here is as I said before pathetic.

Just my view.  Clearly others will disagree.

omg, I agree with Frankie.
Some of the comments on the shirt are plain embarrassing.
I remember that Smeltzy had the good grace to give us a wave when we were belting them 6-0.
He's still New Zealand's number 9.Turfmoore2010-02-23 22:43:25

I only parroted someone far smarter than me's opinion, so you don't have to feel too dirty Turfy.

Smeltzy aside, I hate Cold Ghost as much as the next man (or women) but the whole thing seems a bit childish to me.  People on here would be up in arms if a supporters group from another club sent a phoenix shirt covered in abuse to Ricki Herbie and Tony P last season, no matter how good natured they claimed it to be.

Stick the shirt on the wall at the bencher or 4Kings, but don't send it.

I'm all for a bit of fun, but some of the comments on that shirt are a bit off.

We've got a good rep out there as a supporters group, the last thing we need is the same Journo who wrote that beat-up of an article getting hold of this and reporting it with the same kind of slant.

Hang it in the BB.

The great majority of the offence taken by fans here had nothing to do with Smeltz's comments on particular incident in the game that Piney thoroughly analysed, but rather on his concluding remarks denigrating the Phoenix and their ability to compete in the play-offs, which were completely unnecessery, and reeked of bitterness, and which Piney simply glossed over in that post.

Smeltz needed to show a bit more class in that situation.

Just send it but include a copy of the article so he knows why....and include a 'We still love you' (But only when wearing White)

Should solve all issues

surely sending a shirt with abuse all over it would cause more problems than the phoenix need..? sending them a plain Nix shirt would probably be funnier and taken as more of a joke. sending this could be the start of something epically tragic, in terms of rivalry between fans of the clubs.
yes, most of us can't stand GCU anyway, but what's the point of antagonising the handful of fans they have? cause that's exactly what will happen.

Many posters in this thread are neglecting the fact that "on the Internet, everyone can hear you scream". That is, every Cold Ghost fan knows by now - from reading it here, or through the grapevine - about the existence of the shirt and the content of the comments. I agree that some of the comments (like use of See You Next Thursday etc) are embarrassing, but the shirt exists, the GCU already know about it... I say that those who had the nerve to make the comments should man up and send the shirt, including a "Don't worry, Smeltzy, we still love you when you're wearing white" if necessary.

I really don't think the GCU fans will declare Total War over this - unless someone here lurks on their forums and has heard that they're really pissed off, that's just paranoid speculation.

Tl;dr - send the shirt with a "just kidding" note.

I saw the shirt being signed at the BackBencher and I was horrified. What does that say about us if it is sent?

"We are a bunch of immature t**sers" ?

Probably.

To maintain our integrity and the good image that The Nix, Wellington, and the YF have created DO NOT SEND THE SHIRT.

I'd be rope-able if someone did that to us. Learn to win with some dignity. We already have the moral high ground. I want to go and watch the Nix play in Oz next season without any angst from the opposition supporters because you've wet your pants with a felt pen in hand.

Grow up!
