Mid-Year Report & Player of the Year so far

Only the players who have had sufficient game time included (poll only allows 15 choices).

For me its Sigmund, he's come on leaps and bounds and has shown he is our best defender currently.

Mid-Term Report:
Goalies - well stocked at the moment
Defenders - looking good
Midfield - struggling to attack and get quality ball in to Smeltz and co
Forwards - Apart from Smeltz we are really lacking, Cov's for me is past it. Draper and Costa haven't been tried enough to warrant a comment. Definitly need another (if not two) striker.

So, we need another striker, perhaps a midfielder on guest. And the attitude needs to lift from the boys. It all looks like the players are having it two easy at the moment and need a real kick up the backside to get them motivated to try and win this league. At the moment, we are staring down yet another wooden spoon.

Yeah, yeah I know its all been said before. Perhaps this should just be player of the year so far but I just wanted to get my point across at the same time (which is pretty much the same as everyone else).

I think Sigmund's been consistently the best

Siggy closely followed by Dodd who has responded strongly to early season criticism due to being played out of position. Plus he scored a goal

Sigmund and maybe Dodd have been the most consistent, I don't think I could pick anyone at this stage.

I'd have liked to see Elliot come in as a guest player, he looked in good touch for the all whites and has a decent range of passing, which Brown and McKain really lack. I wonder if he could still be enticed to play.

Biggest disappointment: David Mulligan, can someone please explain how this guy has managed to make it as a professional for so long.

Scrub out the Smeltz option pls.

Dodd for mine...

Interesting point that Herman made about Mulligan. I wonder what on earth he, Troy Hearfield, Draper etc have been up to for the last few weeks.. it must suck being the markers etc in drills aimed at the starting XI...

Has Daniel got a contract for next year?

its a bit sad when our right back is leading the lpayer of the year poll! Not that there's anything at all wrong with right backs or Siggy, just that no-one in the creative part of the team is showing up yet and we need that to happen to succeed.

Same. When he came on for the last 10 minutes of his debut I honestly thought he would be another Old/O'Dor/Mulligan failure. No offence but he looks a bit weird too, like Sam the Bald Eagle - not initially very confidence-inspiring.

Never judge a book by its cover: he's been fantastic and I hope like hell we've secured him for next season.

Last year it was our goalie and our striker vying.

Means we have gone forward from the back, and back from the forward,  ie, we're stuck in the middle of the park

Siggy for me, consistent week on week

Why?, he's been playing..........scored 6 goals for us and will be there till the end of the season. Just cos he's laving doesn't mean he doesn't deserve a rating.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Agree with Sigmund (who does look like a sea monster) with Brown and Dodd tied for second.
With regard to Goalkeepers, the unfortunate thing is that we have two 7/10 keepers with different strengths whereas the better a-League yeams have 9/10 keepers (Covic, Bolton etc).
Defenders. All performing at only80% of their potential, Sigmund and Dodd aside. Mulligan? His failure thus far suggests the mid-to-lower tier of English football is well behind the standard of the A League. I'd still like to see Sigmund The Seamonster at centre back, which seems to be his natural position.
Midfield. Too many of the same type of player. Gao and Daniel are both flatter-to-deceive clones, Kwasnik and Hearfield etc etc and the continued employment of centre backs in the middle shows a lack of thought when recruiting for this season. Simon Elliott would add something different.
Forwards. One quality striker (and he's leaving), one who should have been put out to pasture last season and two youngsters who the coach sems to have little faith in. Kwasnik could have been a solution, but he appears to have left his ability back home.
Management. Poor. Strange substitutions, strange squad selections and shows too much loyalty where it is not merited (Coveny especially).
Overall. you'd think that the team is better than eighth place, but seeing as the hopes were justifiably looking towards a top-four finish, would seventh or sixth be good enough anyhow? Not for me.

A-league is league one at best. Mulligan was sh*te at Port Vale, they didnt want him and their in league 2

Yeah, but he was well thought of at Doncaster and for a while at Sc**thorpe.
I'm just surprised at how poor he is.

Ben for me. He seems to be the only one in the side with two functioning balls

Glen Moss. One silly display Vs Melbourne apart. He is the best keeper in the league and he better be starting this weekend or I will get very furious.

Ben Sigmund has been outstanding. So has Dodd. Durante has been a massive disappointment and Mulligan has been poor. Really rated him before he came, Maybe he should be given a go in the midfield.

You could hardly call Durante a "massive disappointment". Our back four is 100% better than last season and Durante is a definite part of that improvement. He doesn't need to be brilliant: solid will do me, and he is nearly always that.

Also, it's not that many weeks ago that Dodd was being abused for his midfield efforts on this very forum. Apparently forgotten now.

Hard News wrote:
Durante isn't a captain

I'm interested in why you say that. Almost all of the problems I see week to week with the Phoenix have resulted from a lack of tactical organisation and certain players being either incapable of doing, or unwilling to do, their jobs. Ultimately that's the coach's responsibilty, not the captain's.

Maybe Durante is the quiet type - I don't know, it's hard to tell just from the TV - but I'm not sure that a real firebrand could've altered our results much so far.

I have no problems with him as a player, and a spokesman for the team,  It just seems to me that you need either the Captain or the manager to be the sort of person that will go off on one when it's going wrong.

At Newcastle if he lead then van Egmond strikes me as someone who would have gone off on one.  In Melbourne Ernie is kind of quiet but Muscat makes sure everyone knows what he expects and how to fix what is wrong.

It just seems to me that we have two of the quieter types instead of one of each.

Of course this is all just theory and conjecture and I could be talking bollocks.

COVENEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's been average this season, but he's a striker and he's only scored once in nearly two seasons. Don't make jokes like that

He might not score many goals but he's a spiritual leader and a figurehead for the team.

How has Durante been a disappointment? He has been rock solid in defence, and I can't remember any bad errors. Sigmund, Dodd AND Durante hve been superb for us this year in defence, and that's helped our recent form to. I can't believe you'd call Durante a massive disappointment when he's played well in every game he's been in.

That's a joke. He's past it. If he's such a spiritual leader and figurehead then why isn't he performing well? If he was a 'spiritual leader' he would probably be playing maybe perhaps?

So you include Gao and Kwasnik in the voting options but leave Manny Muscat out? What's all that about?

I voted for Siggy btw.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

All fixed now. Gao was in because he was playing and Muscat wasn't at the time I made the poll. And the poll only allows 20 choices I think.
