Movember is here and I'm doing Taupo twice!

Oi Fever what are we doing?

It's Movember and time to make a difference. Movember’s aim is to raise vital awareness and funds for men's health including prostate cancer and male mental health. I want to  collect money from the Fever Zone as I've bloody well been through hell and back at times with this.

My commitment is to grow a moustache for the month of November,  AND to complete the Taupo Enduro 320km bike ride on 24 November. That's twice around the lake folks. I knew I could comfortably do the 160km so needed a bigger challenge. The preparation has been a challenge physically and mentally. This ride is in support of Movember so please give what you can afford.

The size of the donation isn't important, every little bit helps.  If you want to know more about what you'll be helping to fund, you can visit http://nz.movember.com/about/funding-overview/.

To highlight the importance of what I am doing, take a look at these statistics:

*1 in 10 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime
*This year 3,000 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed
*1 in 8 men will experience depression in their lifetime

I'm asking you to support my Movember campaign by making a donation by either:

Donating online for me at http://mobro.co/robtheedge

*Writing a cheque payable to 'Movember Donation Fund,' referencing my Registration ID: 14312 and mailing it to: Movember, PO Box 12 708, Wellington 6144

Thank you in advance for supporting my efforts to change the face of men's health. All donations over $5 are tax deductible.

Yes I am disgusted to say my fledgling career as a Road Cyclist is already tarnished by doping. I admit  I've tried a performance-enhancing drug.

On the way to Bulls I stopped off a local little dairy convenience store and opted for a bottle of Coke Zero - I'm not proud, but hey if it's good enough for Lance...

Can't wait for Manny's badass Mo. He always looks like scary biker gang member who will rip you in half if you scratch his bike.

Do you have any Tour de France titles that we can now take off you?

Message for Hard News, Feverish, etc. I can't seem to pm you guys anymore. Anyhow I'm thinking of taking around a bucket and info about myTaupo Enduro ride before Sunday's match at the Pub to raise funds from my fellow Yellow Fever. I'm riding to raise funds for Movember.
I'm wondering is there any legal issues that I should be aware of? Or anything else? I know you guys have done stuff like this before and may have some ideas if I'm breaking the law or anything. I'll print a recipt and post it on the forum the next day for the amount. Obviously I'll talk to the pub as well to see if it's ok with them.
Cheers,
Fort.

It would be much more amusing for us if you took your bike in & tried to peddle your way around The Pub!

Think Smithy is the only one who could give you accurate legal advice on this, but he's in Oz and not sure if he's checking this.

Just finished a practice ride from Home to Hunterville and back again for 304km yesterday. Apart form "Hitting the wall" at Levin on the way back, (getting disorientated, losing my balance when getting off/on the bike, road markings merging into kerbs and visa versa, feeling like vomitng), I'm ok. With a lot of stops all in all it took about 13 and a half hours in the saddle.

My Nemesis and the part I hate the most is The Foxton Straight or the "Foxton Taint", the Foxton Shite" or the "Foxton C**t" as I also like to call it. It reminds a me of the Bermuda Triangle due to it's own freaky weather conditions, except of course the Bermuda Triangle is more interesting as it's a Triangle not a big long friggin road.

The Foxtonites are pretty friendly, their women folk were pretty intrigued by the funky-smelling cyclist that turned up at one of their restaurants the first time I made the trip a couple of months ago. It must have been like the Native Americans seeing Columbus's ships for the first time, actually the smell must have been about the same as a sailor incarcerated on board a wooden ship for 6 months. The two diner style places are great and not some crappy fast food franchise - good for you Foxton.

Foxtonites though would it kill you to put something up along the way to try and ease the mind-numbing boredom that is the Straight? Statues, naked dancing chicks, pictures of European roads, something like that. If anyone wants to take up distance cycling/Randonneuring, I'll give you tips on surviving the Straight.

From immaculate conditions at Hunterville and good conditions at Bulls, (God they milk the whole Bulls thing don't they?), you hit Sanson and that Westerly that blows right through from the coast right in your ear that got me pulling my beanie down to stop getting Bell's Palsy.

Why Car worshipping New Zealand do you put up with such sh*tty roads?

Most of the time driving along it sounds like you are landing Concorde due to the contact of tire against Chipseal.  The ipod/phone music needs to be cranked up to max-volume to hear anything. Riding along traffic on the SH is deafening and riding on it is like riding during an earthquake. Horrible with super-sensitive muscles and pain from long trips.

That Smug bastard from the Tony's Tire Service advert  and the other dude who sings at christmas for the opposition must be laughing their heads off. It was always a mystery to me that you had so many tire adverts on the telly and so many tire-fitters until I went on the roads then it all made sense. F*ck farming as the no1 industry it's the Tire Service that makes all the money. You only have to cycle along to see the ripped up remains of tires along the SH to know that.

You could save money New Zealand by just spreading a bit of tarmac down then sprinkle it with all the remains of the broken glass on the roads and add some sharp volcanic rock and hey presto another kiwi road, no one would know the difference.

I truly admire any cyclist who rides in New Zealand and it's why you have such strong riders in international competitions for such a small country. Compared to other places I've seen and rode it's tough over here.

Oh and Gareth I'd leave the idea of cats wiping out the native bird population alone and go and cycle along SH1 to see the carnage that cars cause to your bird population it actually hurts your eyes after awhile.

Don't forget you can support me and the misery I'm putting myself through in aid of Movember here http://mobro.co/robtheedge

 thanks for reading, Fort

Hey Fort.

Seeing as the Sallies always turn up at pubs shaking the money box I don't see why you couldn't.  Remember that last game it was pretty quiet until 15:00, and some of us will be at Team Welly.

Sorry Guys... Great Effort Blah Blah..

Watching the players on Sunday, thinking they were putting more effort into their dodgy facial hair than on the field. One of the players looks so unfit and podgy he should have tried Taupo at least once in the off season..

Yeah being negative.. SORRY the moment will pass..

Final week before the big ride. Not fussed about the distance more about the etiqutte re: the other riders and also taking the wrong turn in the dark. Did a few hills yesterday without food to see if I could cope on a hill with a starvation induced bonk. Akatarawa Hill Road and then Paekakariki Hill Road. Did it, not pleasant and I feel somewhat under the weather and blurgh this morning.

I'm intending to have a few Yellow Fever signs made up to hang from the bike - So feel free to give money.

Thank you to the main man, Kiwi Jambo from Coolmoves (for all your moving requirements, eftpos in every vehicle)  for the very generous donation to MOvember.

I have had Andy from MENtality (Paraparaumu's Man Cave) trimming the growth today, so I will post an update on my MOpage  later.

Thank you to everyone that has donated to MOvember so far, whether to Fortean Times, Hard News or myself, it is very much appreciated. We have raised $1730 so far.

There is still time to donate to the fund raising for mens mental health & cancer research, please visit the YELLOW FEVER MO  page, & make a donation, no matter how small. (we could also do with some MoSistas joining the team, Gala Parte next wednesday at Foxglove!)

FT - How did you go in Taupo?

How many f&cking hills are there?

Well that was interesting. If I do it again I would do so much differently. I never realized there were so many hills - I did no preparation, 3 hill rides in 3  months was just stupid I had no idea what to expect and was so poorly prepared cuse I'm a bloke and I know it all like a twat..

The first 160km was amazing. There was about 80 of us all light up like christmas trees at 01:30am. I managed to stay in a bunch for the first 90km which was very fast. The advice I got from several sources was take a support person in a car around with you - that was stupid advice. It's nice to stop off and have a chat with Vick who was my support but then you lose your bunch and have to half kill yourself to catch up with them again and I did that twice.

At 90km the bunch just stopped and I was aiming for 5 and a half to 6 hours and I was stupid and instead of waiting I carried on, some f*cker had lit a fire in a field that we had to ride through at 3 in the morning which killed our lungs. I kid you not a fire with smoke that we had to ride through for about 8km.

At around 100km the hills went away but the wind picked up and I was on my own, (the beer I had the night before and complete lack of sleep made me feel a bit shitty also), I could not get on a a good bunch at all so was mostly solo.

Then that Hatepe hill kicks in and I watched far better, younger and fitter riders fall apart  when I passed them.  That hill was a complete c&*t.

Made it to my hotel and again I should not have had a quick shower I should have just changed into new gear. The smell of my kit was like a a week old dead possum I've never smelled like that so I knew I'd gunned it. Vick was sure she'd have to wash the stuff twice.  15 min break and then back on bike for the next lap.

I missed the Enduro turning as I was in a pack of Lance Armstrong wannabies who were going mental at the start and were suffering at only 30km in, for me it was 190km in. So I missed my turn that meant later on I had to do an extra 5km to make sure I did the enduro I reckon in the end I did around 324km rather than 320km. I've never done a race like this before this was my first proper race.

So the next 90km was just hell and hills - every time I thought "that's it I've done the hills" only to have misjudged the distance.

I can only applaud the so many folk who did the once around who suffered, I stopped about 3 time to check in with folk because I'm a health professional and was truly worried about the state some folk where in that added time.

Amazing people.

Then the second time I faced Hatepe hill I was in with the one lappers,  so many people were just caving in and and walking up. I realized that if I stopped I would not do it so had to keep peddling and it was hot.

I met x2 Enduro riders on the the second lap and both were at their complete limit as was I - they made it.

Murder, poor time but worth it. I recommend any bloke having a bit of a midlife crises to train, (or not train like me), and give it a go as you actually realize how tough you actually are. Passing so many folk who had only did a fragment of your ride was amazing.

Please give to Movember as it's so important.
