So I need to read back from the very first post to make this truly accurate, right?

There's 900,000 posts, so at one post a second, that would take you 10.4 days to get through. Plus, everyone would need to do it, otherwise the leaderboard would have a massive bias to what you like ;)

Surely this is what the off season is for. Mods take control.

Hey Feverites,

We've pushed a new feature to the site for you all to use today, and it's called This. You can see a new button at the bottom of all posts, that's the This button. Basically, it's there for you to use when you agree with what someone is saying, and should be used instead of quoting the post and typing "This".

It's our version of the Facebook 'like', the Twitter 'favourite' and the Reddit 'upvote', and you also get a karma point for everytime someone This's one of your post. The total number of This's for a post is displayed in the top right corner, underneath the post number. Your overall karma is displayed under your avatar, and is probably going to be a better indication of how much people agree with your opinion than your post count is.

You can only This a post once, and you can't This your own posts either. At the moment, you can't Un-This a post, but we'll add that in later.

Have fun playing with it!

EDIT: Nik fixed the button, normal transmission resumes.

You could call that the "Fark This button"

Good feature but the karma concept ignores relativity i.e. a mong who clutters up the forum with 100 posts, 10 of which get This'd (10%), will have better karma than someone who makes 5 posts, all of which get This'd (100%).

That may be what you want, and it certainly encourages lots of posting, but personally I think good karma also comes from knowing when to shut the fuck up and not fill the forum with your garbage while fishing for karma points.

If there was down-voting (maybe a button called 'Not this' or 'Fuck this') it might work better cause then you'd be forced to quality control your posts more. Or karma is a % of This posts out of all posts.

EDIT: is the 'Un-this' idea what I am talking about (a down vote) or is it simply that you can undo a This that you did earlier?

It's undoing a this, but we are going to add a Not This button as well. Wanted to get the positive one up and running before we add the negative one in, because there's already enough negativity around here sometimes without a button to add to it.

Very good point about the relativity though, we will take on board and have a think. Basically, the intention is that karma will be something quite general and not taken very seriously, and that the button is used for agreement with a post.

The reason I wanted to do the button is to reward thought out and well reasoned posts like your one just now :)

Happened to me once before recently. It fixed itself. Try logging out then back in? Or clear cache

Seems like you could have just 'this'd my post instead of typing all that.

Hasn't fixed it for me. Also now can't format posts (the strip of text editing stuff in the posting window has disappeared). I'll try again from home. Working on my mobile though (which also runs chrome) so something weird on my computer I guess.

Sounds like a JS error - are you able to let me know what version of Chrome you're using? Usually in Help > About on Windows, or under "Chrome" > "About Chrome" on OS X.

Regarding the karma system. I think it works out fine the way it is (once the dislike option is introduced). Yes, you can post a lot and get a lot of karma, but that just means you make a big contribution that people seem to enjoy. Likewise you could post a lot of rubbish and your karma will be bad relative to the karma of others.

You could introduce some sort of karma to post ratio/score, but I think that's over-complicating it. It would also heavily skew in new users favour as those who have already have a fair few posts would be handicapped (insert gag here).
