You really think that Utting would sign on as a 3rd string keeper? Because I don't. And I don't think we should want him anyway.

As cultured as Che Bunce's left foot and as profilic as John Lammers

Utting would not be going to Wellington,...he's retired....again!

Spoonly.... Honestly,...seen him play...not the best young keeper in NZ.
He's not even playing NZFC..., mind you, he has to climb above Gillespie and Nicholson at Auckland City to do so...

Nicholson.... Still one of the best keepers in NZ...Will do all he can to win

Bannatyne.... Walked out on Team Wellington...Not the yet on Attude i would want in the team.

Highfiekld...Canterbury's Player of the season...A good solid keeper.

O'brien....Played very well behind a Leaky Napier Defense.

Imary,....Had a great season at Manawatu..

And i bet you , if they were to train everyday, twice a day, they would be a lot better than the two that has been signed.

I'm sorry, i just don't have faith in these two the Nix have signed......So Riki better be signing a great Back 4.

Give spoons a chance, keepers supossedly don't reach their peak until they reach 30 anyway and he's still ten years away.

Whoever he signs, it should be a young keeper, less injury plagued and it'll be better for the future of the game.

Yeah TouchMe got it right. 25-30 is the prime time for a keeper to peak. uncle steve2007-05-08 11:43:29

Hes a Nz talent and he seems to be fine with me, from what ive seen. I say stick him on the roster and let the boy get some game time. If its not working out drop him, easy as that.

There is an assumption being made that both Paston and Moss WILL in fact get AW call-ups. Maybe the one who is on the bench won't. If one of them didn't they'd still need a third choice, of course, but they should sign a young local on a part-time contract and Spoonley seems to fit the bill IMHO.

i think one thing new zealand has always had is good keepers; utting, gosling, van hattum, pickering, etc.  so we could/should be as good as anyone in the world simply because of the fact that keepers don't rely as heavily on eye to foot co-ordination.

it will be interesting to see how moss and paston go this season.  i think they could possibly be at least as good as the likes of bolton, beltrame, etc over the ditch, so you can't blame ricki for looking overseas to fill other positions.

As good as Beltrame and Bolton....ahahahaha... Bolton will be insulted with that comment!!
There is No WAY IN HELL they will ever be as good as Bolton

...could possibly be...  i guess i'm not to sure either, but reserving judgement.  you're right, bolton might be stretching it a bit.  too bad utting retired.

has there been any talk of bannatyne, nicholson or highfield being signed?  i've never seen spoonley play, but i guess he'd be a good u20 option as he is our u20 keeper.

Am I the only one worried about the Nix signing both AW keepers?

I mean, that means we have to carry 3 keepers in the squad to cover during AW absences and also means there will be no back up while the AW's are away (unless we have 4 keepers which would be just mental).

they'll probably sign a kid as number 3 and get someone like bannatyne, nicholson or highfield on a short term contract.  maybe even danny milosevic!

I thought that towards the end of last season with an organised defence in front of him Paston looked ok. Moss also had a blinder v Brazil and is still young. Not convinced it's good for one of NZ's best 2 keepers to be back up for the other at club level.
Spoonly is a good idea - personally if I was Ricki I'd use my contacts to get Mossy a gig as a number 1 somewhere in Asia and sign someone like Banners as No2.

Thoughts?

An earlier post on this thread - seems relevant to what your talking about Malky.

You guys are taking the piss in saying Nicholson, did you watch NZFC this season whatever talent he had has well and truly gone.

If not young Spoonley, then look outside the square Phil Imray or Dan Robinson.

Phil Imray is ya man.
Won the Chatham cup and central league in the last couple of years. Finished 2nd with Manawatu in the NZFC this year.
He's 6ft 3, 23 years old, lives sleeps and eats footy and would jump at the chance.
Knows Stu Jacobs well from Wests and would run through walls for him.

Give him the number 1 shirt at TW and 3rd choice cover at the phoenix

Nice idea. But it is not that easy for players to move from TW (or any other NZFC team) to the Phoenix and back again. So, it won`t happen.

Please don't even mention Nicholson or Ballentyne's name again. They are way...way past it. If you have seen Nicholson in the past year you'll know why. Ballentyne can't even be relied upon to turn up to Team Wellington training and you want him to train every day at least once a day. Go Imray or go even younger Gleeson or O'Keefe in the U17's. Paston will be No.1, Moss won't wanna hang round if he is second.

By the way your forgetting the FIFA rule that you can only transfer 3 times in a calender year so that TW idea is good but flawed.

i know the basics of the fifa transfer law when it comes to buying and selling, but what about loans? i know it never happens but can ya loan a player out, then recall him, then loan him out etc etc etc?

Get over yourself you moron.... these two are still in the top 4 of NZ keepers.
They Have both suffered from injuries recently, and i would still have them in my squad any day.

When it comes down to it....Winning Games and Titles is what its all about.... what Has Paston And Moss done?.... i will tell you....NOTHING!!. Wining a game is even a struggle for these two muppets!

Really Rodger... you're re-writing history a bit there aren't you ?  Unless I'm mistaken many of Napier City Rovers best seasons in the last ten years were back when Paston was the clubs keeper ?

And besides, at this stage we don't have the strike power at the Phoenix to cover for Calamity Ross's couple of errors a match.

Sorry I didn't realise the Phoenix was Welloington's latest retirement village. What's Nicholson's injury by the way...a pulled calf, career threatening.

Last time both of these keepers played for the Knights they were below average and now the Aus leage has improved so they are going to look even worse.

If you want to compare apples with apples then Paston has won the Chatham Cup and the old Nat league. I can't vouch for Moss but I don't have, Bannatyne and Nicholson make him look good without him doing anything. Nicholson and the Auckland City defence just hide behind their stikers, all Auckland City have done on the past season is out score teams, all be that under an excellent coach in Allen Jones it should be said.

Moron...stop mugging me off.

...ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...... Granted, When these two were at the Kingz, they weren't at there best... but thats had a quite a lot to do with the fact that in the last season, the Kingz only trained once a day, and that was after work. Given the chance to train twice a day, they would still be better than Paston And Moss.

Clamity Ross....... Sh*T mate...Take a look at Paston will ya!!

Why dont you get Ivan Necivski he had a great stint with the Jets and then they bought Covic and he got the chop but he would be a great 3rd choice keeper.

3rd one might as well be a young kiwi. I guess that was Spoonley in goal last night at Ole. He was quite vocal which was good to see. Wgtn Utd keeper and Wests seconds keeper both good but prob too young. Could always get Mark Fulcher to double as team doctor..

Even though Spoonleys not interested we should give him a future deal or sign him up on a short term contract.

Was with the Knights before the Jets got him back. His hopeless would rather have Danny Milosevic back. Anyone know where he is these days, HN?

Im suggesting as 3rd keeper Jacob Spoonley.

Last I heard Milosevic retired, or at least was considering it.  I'd rather Necevski, but if we sign a 3rd keeper (and it's a big if) in a squad of 23 it's going to be someone young and cheap.

No keeper with No. 1 aspirations would sign for a role as No. 3, and the club couldn't afford to spend that much of the cap on someone of that level.

Interestingly the Knights had 3 keepers with No.1 aspirations.

Yes, but we're hoping the Phoenix have better money management aren't we ?

...and that was forced on the Knights by Milosevic being a twat.

Is this meant to be a criticism, lovinit?!  You said: "Auckland City defence just hide behind their stikers, all Auckland City have done on the past season is out score teams"

I thought that was the aim in a game of football - to out score the opposing team  ... !

Wgtn Utd's Goalie is Nick Tarrant isn't it and Wests seconds keeper Jake Gleeson?. Tarrant went to Otago for the NZFC didn't he? cause Gleeson jumped over him at TW.

Spoonley would be the best option, but can't see him leaving Auckland.

Maybe they won`t sign a third keeper? If Moss or Paston get a serious injury they will sign a replacement. It might be better to leave the potential third keeper playing in the nzfc.
