Should we play a game? Which teams didn't want the Nix yoof/reserve team in the NZFC?el grapadura2009-06-23 11:05:26

That's a backwards step/leap in my opinion. Couldn't NZ Football stand up and say that it is happening?
What are the chances of a reserve team next year?

Well it wouldn't be the Auckland sides.  I mean, they are the ones that keep telling us they want want more matches, more media coverage of the league and live TV coverage of games so they wouldn't object to it.

An interesting issue has just been pointed out to me.

If the Nix Reserves are in the NZFC, does that make the NZFC a professional league?

If it does, that would make it ineligible for gaming machine charitable trust money, which is what it lives on.

But, if that's the case, someone should just come out and say so.  Seems to me it could be fairly easily settled by dialogue with the Trusts and FIFA.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Well put Tony.

Also, does anyone find it even slightly unprofessional that Glading told The Press before the Phoenix?

Glading said he expected Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata, who had been pushing for a reserve team in the NZFC, would be disappointed.
The Nix haven't been told about this before it was released to the Press?

That's beyond unprofessional, it borders on malicious.

Another year of being severely disadvantaged compared to the other 9 A-League teams..

I'm pretty sure neither of the new sides are running Yoof league sides in the first season.

Makes me sick.
Id love to know the club that was the odd one out...
A bunch of pratts.

Good step backwards for NZ football.

What a short sighted decision. A nix team in the NZFC could only have been good for the game in NZ.

The development of the NZ youth players in the nix and namely Costa, Draper and Spoonley would surely have been advanced by having regular competitive football. Ditto for the new crop coming through, including Rojas.

Whilst the Phoenix is a privately owned professional club it has to be good for NZ to have a locally based team in the a-league and having a number of the all whites getting valuable experience and budding all whites having a career path option at home.

This seemed to be one of those rare win-win situations but NZ football is rife with petty and small minded people and weak administrators. Where was the downside?

I think that someone should stand up and over rule them. who gives a stuff about one mans view. Or put on a $9 million referendum

I honestly think that this is disgusting.
The NZF has COMPLETELY failed in their job in overseeing the growth in NZ football.

If they had noticed one thing from the confed cup they would have realized that more youngsters need to be developed in professional environments earlier for NZ to be compeditive in the future.

This is happening with all the other A league teams, who have youth teams. You can see that from last season every team from the HAL promoted about 2-3 youth players into their senior outfit. This  also reduces the stress on the club for finding new and upcoming players, while lifting the quality of lower age group teams.

I'm not suprised about the decision as all the franchise owners have a vested interest in the deal , but the NZF should have put its foot down (pun intended) and done what is right for New Zealand Football. Not bowing down to a couple sissies.

Can NZF overrule them?  They should because this is rubbish.

Tony, give them a piece of your mind mate!

I dont think so

From the article:
Glading said all eight clubs had to support the move, under the terms of the NZFC licensing agreement which expires at the end of 2009-10.

I doubt the NZFC licensing agreement is even remotely important enough to cause even the slightest stir if it was overrode.

1. You'd be surprised, and

2. Even assuming they could, it doesn't really set a good precedent/establish trust/good faith etc etc.

Which franchise/s objected and why? Any clues anyone?
Was it re: the "professional" league issue stated above ..the fear of losing trust funding?
If it was...seems a bit rich to me, considering the amount of money/benefits allegedly already trading hands in some quarters.
Nix yoofs competing doesn't magically change the NZFC into a professional league...lets be real!
And trying to shore up dwindling trust handouts is not going to be a successful strategy even in the short term either.
Is there any way this decision could be reviewed?

On the face of it this is another example of the small minded narrow viewpoint that has prevailed in NZ football for so long. We will never get anywhere if this sort of thing continues.

If its to do with professionals playing in a supposed amateur league then thats bogus as well and would be a very hypocritical viewpoint coming from some quarters

Was the fourfourtwo article written before the news today ? Because as Tony says he hadn't heard if there hopes had been dashed but on here he showed his emotions with a very explanatory

yea i read them whats wrong with them?
i would imagine that some of aucklands players are earning more than the likes of costa only 40,000.

phoenix knew it was going to be an uphill battle from the start so this dosnt totally surprise me.
To be honest i can see both sides of the story but we should really concentrate on getting a solid local base before letting the Phoenix in. rather see the likes of canterbury, manawatu, otago, napier, waikato and wellington get some soild fondations before we worry about letting a Phoenix team in.

and it wouldnt totally surprise me if it was team wellington objecting

Oh well so we wait another year, it's not going to have any impact on the 1st team this season or the next anyway I mean they talk about blooding youngsters and giving senior players a run out, just wait another year when the new deal is due

The impact it will have on the First team will be major Giddyup. It works in every teams interest to have all players match conditioned each week.
Youth players, sidelined players and those returning from injury can have a good competitive workout, prior to first team duty... the more match conditioned every player is the easier they will slot in to first team positions if required.
We were probably lacking this with some benched players last season and it will be evident again this season if this isn't sorted.
