Youth players, sidelined players and those returning from injury can have a good competitive workout, prior to first team duty... the more match conditioned every player is the easier they will slot in to first team positions if required.
We were probably lacking this with some benched players last season and it will be evident again this season if this isn't sorted.

Just like we did last season?
Thank you, NZFC, for another off-season of false hope
The New Zealand Football Championship clubs believe they would be putting their league at risk if they allowed the Wellington Phoenix to enter a reserve team this season.
After months of lobbying, the Phoenix's request for a reserve team has been shot down by the clubs, who appear fearful of what impact a professional team joining their amateur league would have.
NZFC spokesman and Team Wellington chairman John Dow they don't want to risk the League's amateur status, and the access to grant money that comes with it.
But Dow says they're not putting their own interests ahead of what's best for football in New Zealand.

If thats true then what a bunch of small minded backward hypocrites the NZFC franchises are. Bullsh*t they are not putting their own interests ahead of NZ football, amateur administrators at their very best, what a joke they are.
I take it then that no NZFC franchise pays any money to any of their players? John Dow over to you to answer this (but I doubt it will be answered).
Sorry for the rant but football will never progress in NZ if this is the attitude from those at the top. There is always a way around things i.e. how about all games against the Phoenix reserves being classed as friendlys no problems there. NZFC teams get extra games, we get match practice and there will be more interest.

You laugh? Your not intimating that NZFC franchises pay some of their players money in an "amateur" league are you? Why that may put the funding of the entire league at risk, quick lets call John Dow

The solution's right in front of us.
Our already overworked, flat-out Phoenix marketing dept.. not only need to lock down key Phoenix sponsorship in the next few days but also find NZ Football a sponsor with deep pockets willing to stick in there for the long haul and see the NZFC and NZ Football up where it belongs. No need to rely on Trust Money any more..get it out in the open.
While they're at it, negotiate the tv coverage and broadcast rights, packaged in one helluva marketing blitz the sponsor/s will love, take care of all merchandising rights and distribution then ...have some lunch.
Afterwards... business lunches take time..negotiate suitable floor space in Wellington Phoenix Towers, off Victoria St Wellington for NZFootball to move into...I'm sure Terry will accomodate them...
So He and Tony can keep an eye on them!
All in a days work really!

The Phoenix football franchise is disappointed the New Zealand Football Championship clubs are blocking their bid to enter a Phoenix reserve team in their competition.
The NZFC clubs fear such a move might compromise their amateur status and access to grant money, but the Phoenix CEO thinks that is a non issue.
Tony Pignata believes their club's reserve side playing in the National championship would bring obvious benefits for the game in the country.
Pignata believes NZ football should be grateful for the role the Phoenix play in preparing All Whites for international play, and the flow on financial benefits that playing in tournaments like the Confederations Cup bring football here.
and we develop our young talent by having them in the stands......
The New Zealand Football Championship sides continue not to allow the Phoenix to enter a reserve team in their league The Phoenix have still got the "situation vacant" sign up for their reserve team. The New Zealand Football
Championship sides have prevented the Phoenix entering a reserve team in their league to date. Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata says the club's excuse that playing a reserve side might compromise their amateur status irritates him. He says the move would benefit football in New Zealand as well as the individual clubs. He says the games would have been televised and they could have used them as curtain-raisers to A-league fixtures. Pignata says he will now sound out Football Australia in the hope of playing a reserve team in its domestic competition - otherwise the team could be forced to have a knock around at the local park.

In a word, no. NZers count as import spots. Smeltz, Lochhead, Siggy etc would never have got a contract with another A-League club.

The problem, however, is that this isn't an idea cooked up two days ago. The first time I heard Tony P moot this was in October last year - if this was a genuine concern for NZFC sides, surely it is something that could have been clarified, or at least raised as the potential issue, much earlier.
But the whole back-handed nature of the announcement, with seemingly Phoenix not even being told of the decision before it was released to the press, leaves a very bitter taste in the mouth.
