Two more import players will bring the squad to 19/23. Probably looking at an additional 3 Kiwi/Australian players to meet league requirements of squad size and cap spend. No real way to predict the imports, but there's really only a small list of local players that could be a genuine option.

In terms of Aussie players, it would surely have to be dipping into the NPL. There are barely any pro players left without a club, best of the bunch would be Aryn Williams and Chris Herd who have just finished stints in the Indian league after not so convincing A-League seasons, so that sums that up.

Uffie said a few weeks ago we were talking to a couple of Kiwi players overseas. There aren't many of them, so surely it we've been in contact with at least one of these players:Elliot Collier, Clayton Lewis, Nikko Boxall, Ryan de Vries, Marco Rojas, Jeremy Brockie, Decklan Wynne, Bill Tuiloma, James Musa. You'd have to say Rojas and Tuiloma would be pretty unlikely to come to the nix, but I'd be interested in any of those coming to Wellington except Brockie.

Watto and Awad are overseas too ;)

Awad was rumoured to be coming to trial but that doesn't look to be happening now.

Love to see de Vries in a Phoenix shirt. I think he's as talented as Krishna and still has years to offer.

Yeah he would do well in a WeeNix shirt but that's about it.

I agree - would take a season to find his feet - the Wee-nix could do worse - mentor - pro - golden boot domestically, like for like with Krishna really - but coach would have to take a punt - still - if you're pies - you get fired and that's that.

Thought his last season in NZ was bang average.

Just a thought... Bernie Ibini. Got experience in the league, mates with Marinovic and has played for Sydney which could intrest Ufuk... Game time and stats haven't been great in Korea and he would surely start next to Ball? Thoughts?

Would be an upgrade on Sotirio but he struggles to have any impact as a starter. All his best games were coming off the bench for second half cameos.

22 year-old Aussie striker Andrew Pengelly at our FFA Cup opponents next week, Brisbane Strikers.

9 goals in one game weekend before last in Queensland NPL.

Season tally 32

https://www.theffacup.com.au/news/watch-out-wellington-brisbane-forward-scores-nine-goals-ahead-ffa-cup-showdown

Most prolific striker in Brisbane Strikers history (including old NSL days) over one season.

Good chance for Talay to look at him Wednesday next week in the FFA Cup match.

Should we be interested?

could argue that's exactly the same as Sotirio in a way, except Sotirio has been far less productive. I like Ibini but I don't think he would come here for wages that match his ability

Could have said similar things about Williams.

The same can be said about other players - it is the impact they create that matters

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

He certainly made some impact with those racist expletives.

Correct 100%.  However, the argument was whether we should ignore players like Ibini just because they are recognised as "impact players" rather than consistent performers.

Steven Taylor liked a Guiseppe Rossi Instagram post. Lock it in now lads! Would we take him? Would he get marquee money? His left foot was dynamite in FIFA 12 Ultimate team.

Gosh I'm desperate for the season to start.

Rossi did spend a small amount of time on loan at Newcastle.

Tried last season, it didn't happen. Maybe he's cheaper a season later though.

As much as I'd love to have a (decent, read: not Marco Rossi) Italian player at the Nix, we'd be taking a massive punt on Giuseppe Rossi. Absolute quality, but so riddled with injuries. He could really have been one of the greats but he's been very unlucky with injury after injury in his career.

Is there a metric we can use to narrow our player search and increase our chances of a transitional move to the Windy City?

I know, I just said metric as we inch towards another season.

Prem experience? Still years in the legs, 30-33, up for a challenge, point to prove, loves travel, doesn't have a wife in Sydney, you know the whole player approach.

Sharke, I think I just signed Hudson's love child "Powers Hudson" when I was after James Milner - metrics eh?

bwtcf spotted this on Twitter

Matti Steinmann joined #HSV as you know, no future. Now it could go to the other side of the globe for him: Wellington Phoenix from Australia has made an offer to the midfielder. [IMAGE]

Looks like another failed youth prospect, he played for the German u15, u16, u17 and u20 sides. Hopefully he can regain some confidence and do well here with consistent game time. Judging by a report I found online, his team has been trying to offload him to 3rd tier German sides but he didn't want to drop down to that level.

Matti Steinmann (24) played 9 Bundesliga games and 3 of 2.Liga with the HSV by Christian Titz. Then, his star declined and went to the Danish Vendsyssel FF. Now I was training with the HSV U21. In recent days he has received an offer from Wellington Phoenix FC. #HSV

At one point he was loaned out to the club Tom Doyle is currently at - Chemitzer.

On paper, not very inspiring. A level below a Roly like signing. Who knows, though - so hard to tell if these guys work out or not.

He's played 8 games in the Bundesliga in 2018 as DM and has been capped by German youth sides up to and including U20s and played at the 2015 U20 World Cup. He's also a fairly big unit, at almost 1.9m tall and is still only 24. I reckon while he doesn't have super inspiring stats, he's definitely got the potential to be an important part of our team.

The Nix of course are just a stepping stone to Germany's biggest club.

Perhaps drawing a long bow but Thomas Broich was in danger of being a failed German youth prospect as well. He did alright down this way. Was 29 when he arrived at Brisbane, with 47 Bundesliga appearances.

I'm sure Mr & Mrs Marinovic can make him feel at home.

I love your enthusiasm - but you usually don't get cut without a reason. Still, Rojas didn't work out in the Bundesliga and we rate him at this fine club. I agree with the above, it's a stepping stone to Bayern.

A very, very long bow there. Broich has 80+ appearances in the Bundesliga plus 70+ in 2. Bundesliga. Admittedly he came here older, but by the time he was Steinman's age he was a Bundesliga starter and on the verge of making the German national team.

Pretty satisfied, if i remember rightly he was a part of the starting lineup near the end of the season Hamburg were relegated from the Bundesliga so the coach must have rated him in that lineup. Didn't impress in one of the weaker teams in Denmark though

I know a Hamburg supporter and he really rated him, despite his career trajectory not going how everyone thought it would. He says he's a super intelligent player, type of guy who reads the game really well and always knows where to be or where to play the ball before ge gets it. The A-league has lots of players who are very fit and gifted physically, but having someone like Matti could be the difference. Big guy too. Still early days but I reckon he could be an absolute baller in this league
