Agreed. Also doubt Bell would leave the college system for us. Maybe if a team from Europe came calling but not us.

"Payne was invited to trial via a group email last season but turned down the opportunity. But that should not stop the club from trying to secure the 18-cap New Zealand international, perhaps with a more personal touch next time."

If true that's not great from the Nix.

maybe the club didn't have his contact details, and didn't think a phone call was necessary - nothing wrong with an email saying
"hey were looking for players who might want to try and get into the squad for this year, you keen give us a call"

I'd expect the Nix to approach any player individually if they want them to trial. A bulk email is poor form and not a way for the potential recruit to feel like the club actually wants them. If I was Tim Payne I'd feel a little insulted as well. Hopefully we're more proactive about the Kiwis we want to sign this time around.

If Dome wrote the email it probably went "chur my brother Payne, seen you play and you're a real GC, come trial with us but byo boots lol".

What ever happened to wine and dine, no wonder we can't pull any big names if we dont even try with locals first.

Also if you're playing amateur football you should make an effort to play pro and if there is any approach from a pro club... well still feel Rudan is spot on.

This is incredibly myopic. Why must an amateur footballer make an effort to play pro football? If a pro club from, i don't know..., Canada approached Payne must he also make the effort?

Don't be ridiculous. People's situations are different. Also there could be a lack of understanding from the Pro club around what even going on trial means to that person and interruption to their lifestyle.

A group fudgeing email or even some lame mail merge approach is poor from the club if true. (again if true) this actually shows how weak the Phoenix are in parts of their back office and football management. I think they should have invested in a Director of Football role after Ernie walked to give sufficient guidance to ownership, management and direct coaching.

Interesting there is a comment in this article from Rollo linking Durante with a possible move to WU

"Rudan, who guided the Phoenix to the playoffs for the first time in four years, will be reunited with some familiar faces in Victoria as Western United have already signed two Phoenix players, Filip Kurto and Max Burgess, and are also pursuing a third in captain Andrew Durante, who has yet to commit to another season and has not ruled out a return to Australia to finish his playing career."

Rollo just won't let go of the "lack of ambition" line as one of the reasons for Rudan's departure.

I really wish our local journos - Rollo isn't the only one, I'm just singling him out here - would recognise the clear relationship between our owners showing ambition and uncertainty around the license. Rudan really just needs to shut the fark up too on this point, if it's even true that this was one of his reasons.

I'm all for journos asking the hard questions, but there ought to be some balance FFS.

The reality is, IMHO, the ambition shown by the club in recent years, given the circumstances, is fudgeing remarkable. I'm pretty sure most of us wouldn't come close in comparison in our working lives.

durante may be going that way, talked to him early in the season about getting one of his playing shirts from this season and he was fine with it and i could grab one when the season was finished. at the end of the season he gave me a training shirt instead , when i asked the reason for the change i was told andrew wants to hold onto his shirts as it may be his last season at the club.

Well- alternatively Rudan wanted a team keen to play. His success was partly group cohesion and getting a lot out of supposedly average players such as Rufer and Fenton, with attitude a key part.

Be interesting to hear how Burgess was contacted tho- a very comparable player.

If Dura goes- need a long term captain. Already talked about Boxall- any other names?

If Rudan takes Dura and one of Williams or Krishna after having already taken Burgess and Kurto, I have no idea how he can say he's left the club in a good state. Dura and Krishna are so much more important to us than just players for the club, those guys practically ARE the club in a sense. If he takes them, he rips out a considerable part of our club's identity. Leave us alone Mark.

If Dura thinks he can play for another season, and Rudan is committed to playing a back three at WU, then it could be a decent option for him to extend his playing career. Especially if Ufuk looks to change the set-up of the backline under his stewardship.
