Isn't one one of the rules for the youth league that they all have to be Australian? I don't think we'll see much, if any, benefit from this if it does go ahead. The only thing we'll get is a place for players to play when they are coming back from injury etc. It's a 'something is better than nothing' move.

Even if it is ten Aussies, it's not like we don't have Australians at the club already.  If we turn out a couple of future Phoenix starters or someone who goes further in the game the Phoenix have definitely got something out of it.

The biggest bonus for the Phoenix and why they pursued it so strongly is that it gives the Phoenix the option  of playing four seniors in this grade each week. It effectively becomes a sort of reserve grade. For the other A-League clubs to have this and not the Phoenix, it puts us at a huge disadvantage.

Think back to last year when we had guys like Brown injured. It was very difficult to bring him back to match fitness playing for the seniors. If this comes off then in a similar situation he could go back to the reserve grade and play his way back into shape without pressure.

If the bulk of the side has to be Aussies then so be it. As the Link pointed out there have been many good players come out of Canberra. This could provide the Phoenix with another feeder region for young talent. In time it would be great to get more young kiwis in....but in the meantime it is better to get it up and running. Don't forget the Assies are paying for this....they will give us no favours.

I think we have to remember that from the clubs perspective it is Phoenix Youth, not NZ youth.  As much as wed like this to be a development side for NZ kids, for that to happen NZ Football would have to be funding it.  The Phoenix want players who can go on to play for the seniors, whether they are Aussies, Kiwis or from Timbucktoo.  It is really disappointing that NZF isnt in a position to fund this because its a great opportunity.

Well using my argument above, NZF COULD fund per NZ youth in the Nix youth team.

One thing I am interested about is what happens during the A-League off-season. As it stands now, without our participation, youth players will go to local state leagues (maybe AIS) during the off-season. If we had a team it would be easy for any youth players from OZ to play in their state leagues, but possibly not for NZ youth and getting them to play during the winter in NZ may be difficult due to transfer regulations.

To be in any youth league squad they'll have to be on FFA's ID'd players list and I would say that would make them prime targets for VPL/NSWPL/QFL teams.  Don't think they'll have any trouble getting a game in the off season.

Plus, as Jimmy Dean points out (at some very odd times of day) the chances are they'll be predominantly Australian youth anyway so will probably already have local club allegiances.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

great for Canberra and sounds like great for you guys.

it's causing a big stir in the football circles here in Canberra, you don't know hwat you've started.

We have 17, 000 registered footballlplayers, double the number of AFL, Union and League put together. We have  a Union team and Rugby league but the highest football you can play is Canberra Premier League...I kid you not.

We love the Phoenix...okay now...but we always loved em more than the 1,000 knights honest, and we have produced guys like Joe Simunic, Carl Valeri, Ned Zelic, Adam Casey, Kaz Patafta Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Matty Kemp to name a few.

Capital Phoenix, The Phoenix are a couple of names being bandied around.

Can't wait, just a few admin hurdles to jump thru we should be clearer tomorrow after a board meeting tonight.

loved the way you guys farewelled Tony Popovic when he got sent-off. Great stuff

it was our pleasure, believe me

re the CapNix glad to hear that you lot are up for it,

it could all get a bit confusing in terms of loyalties and the kiwi/aus rivalry thing but none-the-less it seems to have the potential to be great for all concerned at this stage

So does anyone know what the timetable is now?   Obviously Canberra football have to meet and give it the green light. Then I suppose they and the Phoenix will have to put it too the FFA.

You realy have to hand it to Tony P. The Phoenix youth side was a dead duck. Now there is a glimmer of hope through his lateral thinking and hard work. Tony...youre the man!!!!!!!

Just an aside. I reckon Barbarouses will slot in to the senior side...he's too good a player to be based with the youth side. It would free up another under 20 slot for another kiwi in the Phoenix squad.

can't see the logic there, there's a minimum of three which means you can have as many as you want if they are good enough

Just consider the Phoenix Yoof home ground as the "Republic of Wellington's Australian Embassy"

This would be great if it happened. In fact it would probably be better for the Phoenix (not NZ Football though) if it was based in Canberra rather than Wellington because it increases the ability to recruit young talent. We basically have NZ covered anyway with the other A-League teams not really interested in recruiting from here because they count as overseas players.

I love that we're actually getting a youth team, even if it is shared with ACT.  In terms of having youth games before A-League games we don't need to have all of them like that, even just 1 or 2 games a year played at the RoF before the nix would be enough and it lets Canberra feel like they own the team/increases exposure to another state in Aus.

We couldn't put him in as CEO/player in an creative attacking midfield position too could we?

quick to analyse situations and create opportunities, never gives up and always gives 100%, plus a classic sense of humour...
