"MF Louis Fenton: How good is this kid? Ricki Herbert may have lost Marco Rojas but give Fenton some time and he may become a better player. Scratch that he will become a better player, because he is more robust than Rojas and does a lot of work in defence as well as being deadly in front of goal."

2012/2013 Rojas >>>> Daylight >>>> Fenton >>>> 2011/2012 Rojas.

Unless whoever wrote that hasn't watched a Victory game since last season, there is no way you can say that Fenton is already better than Rojas. Could argue he has the potential to be, but even that is a huge call with Rojas' current form.

He doesn't say that "Fenton is already better than Rojas" - not sure where you got that from. He says he will be in the future. Still, massive call. It's possible, but to say that he will be better than one of the best players in the league is a bit over the top. Anyway, Fenton is great, Rojas is awesome. Hopefully Fenton keeps improving and becomes a real star.

Fenton is having a good debut season and appears to be a very handy A-League player. But I would be very happily surprised if he did turn out better. With Rojas every time he touches the ball, you get the feeling something might happen. I don't get that with Fenton.

Fenton has the physicality that Rojas lacks, but nowhere as much skill. A few people have mentioned that he normally plays in the middle of the park. That is where his physicality will come in handy. Hopefully he can develop into the midfield playmaker we really need.

Since the sub appearance against Adelaide, Boyd has stood out to me more than Fenton.

I'll tell you what. The All Whites are gonna look sick in 5 years when Fenton, Boyd and Rojas are fully developed, not to mention Chris Wood a seasoned striker in England by then, and Barbarouses (I forget how to spell?) having developed further in Europe. And then there's McGlinchy.

That attack looks pretty fly. Just wonder what will happen to the defense when Nelson retires.

Maybe slightly optimistic. I think only Rojas has the potential to be genuine international quality, the rest are pretty marginal.

Are you including Wood and Wee Mac in that or are you meaning the 2 Phoenix lads in Boyd and Fenton?

I heard there's this young kid called Winston something playing somewhere in England. Could be one to look out for :P

I will give you that with the exception of Wood. He is international quality already I think. Wee Mac has only just been given the keys to the car so hard to tell and Kosta runs hot and cold.

I did say in five years. I think most of those boys will be pretty quality by then and most of the old boys will be done by then. I think that they would be good enough. What do you mean by international quality? Good enough for the All Whites or good enough to compete with other international players/teams? I actually kind of assume these guys will be the future All Whites... I mean who are the other players who will fill All Whites roles as our veterans begin to retire?

...Maybe I should go check out the all whites threads ... Been a little while.

Oh yeah and I didn't forget about Reid but I don't think we could pull a back three without Nelson (not that we necessarily will) and Nelson is just the man. He should have Chuck Noris jokes. He contributes epically.

I'm completely over the back 3 so that bit of it doesn't bother me! In terms of Reid though, 5 years from now he'll be at his peak and if he continues to improve much more I would say he could easily be a better player than Nelsen in his prime. However Ryan's determination and leadership will definitely be missed. Personally I think holding/distributing midfielders and fullbacks are the roles we'll struggle to fill. Anyway, like you said this more suited to an AWs thread!

Well, quite a few of them already are All Whites - my comment was more in relation how I see them stacking up against what I guess is the generally accepted standard for international players.

Interesting. I don't really rate Wood - know he's had successful spells in the Championship, and hope he continues to do so, but I feel he has some serious limitations that are right now preventing him from playing at the highest level. At 21 he's got some room for improvement, but not a hell of a lot.
McGlinchey is about to turn 26, he hardly fits in with the rest of the guys we're talking about here. He's about to hit his prime, and for me has been seriously wanting at the international level, and given his age he should have shown more by now in my opinion.
Kosta I like as a player, think he has the ability to play at a high level, but wastes too much quality possession and that's always going to be a serious problem for him at high levels of the game.

Good enough for Spain or good enough for the Cook Islands? Play for either and you're an "international player".  I guess he means something like World Cup/ Euro Championship standard?

Stop playing dumb guys, you know well what international standard is - being able to compete at the international level that can allow you to have a reasonable degree of success in terms of World Cup qualification or your confederation championship (unless you're playing in Oceania).
No-one thinks Cook Islands when you talk about the international game.

You can have a reasonable degree of success in the World Cup without players even being to this 'international standard'. Heck, look at us last World Cup !!

True that, but it's not a recipe for long-term 'reasonable degree of success'.
