It's almost like they need a psychologist in there (perish the thought tbh).

Probably the best half of football in the 1st half, but you could almost see the self-belief draining away before your eyes. And it was happening 10/15 minutes before the 7 minute blitz.

I know, I know, its serious!

Problem is attitude. We bossed the game first half, were looking good. Pav, while not clinical, was holding the ball up well and bringing others into play. Most importantly, having him up top allowed Greenacre to use his reading of the game and experience to drop in and link midfield with attack, something we struggle with. Then, second half begins and Adelaide get on top - as they were bound to do at some point in the game. Ricki's solution: to take off Pav, undoing our good work and leaving us with no outlet and simply inviting them onto us more, increasing the pressure we were under. Three goals, game over.We need to back ourselves to have the quality to control games. Even when Adelaide got on top, we just needed a slight change - I'd have swapped Brown for Ward to give us a bit more vision and creativity in midfield - to turn the momentum back in our favour. Ricki is much too negative away from home. We have a good team, we need to back ourselves.
Yep, agree with all of this. I was also thinking a Brown/Ward swap would be good just before Pav was subbed... and Adelaide started scoring.

What depresses me about tonight, aside from going down 3 - 0, is we played well (by our standards) for decent periods of time but our standard just doesn't foot it with Adelaide when they go up a gear.

It was the same last season - we couldn't compete with Melbourne and Sydney.

We have at least 4 players on the park at any one time who just aren't good enough when the better teams put the acid on.

We have a few players, some sentimental favourites (i.e. not new), who need to be cut.

Our off season recruitment initially looked underwhelming but now looks poor.

If we really want to win the league we will need to get brutal next season with who goes and who stays and Herbert is going to have to significantly up his recruitment game or it will just be more of the same.

Thought that Leo ha shad his best game of the season. Didnt think much of Tim brown clumsy assed taclkling got him booked again!!  We played good football in the first half and then this totally different team came out to play. we started playing too deep and I also thought that Rikki was at fault for not spotting that the midfield was under a bit of pressure and rang some changes....Ward for brown (anybody for brown to be honest)   then ...too late a goal down and then changes

Agreed, but I think at the half was the time becuase Brown had a yellow and possibly should have had a second, although he did put a nice ball through to Pavlovich - which was butchered.  While the 3 goal loss is hard to take,  there were some things to build on.  It's along season we just need to hang in there at home and things will turn around on the road.TIP-Dadi2010-10-23 00:32:04

our pre-season recruiting was non existant possiblly due to the world cup commitments...and it is showing very much at the moment. I seriously think that Rikki has to have a long hard look at the squad and cut any sentimentality or loyalty out of it and move on three or four players and get some better quality in

A very sad attitude. Hopefully a joke.

Sadly not.  I can't watch our away performances any more.  Drives me up the f**king wall with frustration.  And there was a good Paul Weller documentary on...
Should hang your head in shame then. Ever played a team sport?

Don't be a twat.  I've been playing football for probably longer than you've been on the planet.  We are crap away from home.  Week in, week out.  That's why I'm not watching.  That's my choice - and why there is the same debate on here every away game about "what's missing."  Remind me - how many points have we got across the ditch this season?
OK Your choice (not to watch that is).

But you must have been playing football for a long time!

regular game stops after 90 mins plus stoppage right?

Sure we lost 3-0 but I thought we had a very good game largely.  Paston should have done better with the first I thought.  Nothing he could do about the second and for the third he could've stood a bit stronger and bigger but overall I don't blame him.  Disappointed obviously but some encouraging signs for sure.  Pavlovic should have at least had a shot off his one on one.

First half was very good in comparison to most of what we have seen this year..home and away.  Went to bed at halftime..wake up this morning dreaming of 0-0 maybe.......same old.

I agree. RH's combo role is not working. Again the alarm bells were ringing for 10 mins before the inevitable first goal, and the coach was slow to react. Adelaide were swamping the midfield, winning all the 50-50's, though fact is their quality in Flores and Dodd is a cut above what we currently have. Offensively we're a one trick pony without having any aerial options in the box. It just makes any aerial delivery nothing more than footy practise for Oz defences.  McAllister's seemingly out of favour, which brings you back to the pre-season recruiting. Yeah Pav should've buried one of his chances, but got into some great positions with his runs.  Phoenix are a bit like a rundown restaurant at the moment, needing Gordon Ramsay to come in, and deliver some hometruths.

Just watched highlights, our left back (Manny?) was roasted for two of the goals.

Aside from Hearfield and Leo (when he turns up) we have no pace - when we play teams like Adelaide who have players with genuine gas we get found out.

The problem is we have too many journeyman and not enough play makers / match winners. I know that the better players cost but I think we made a mistake in going for a bigger squad when we could have reduced the squad by say two and put the $s saved in to a better player or two.

Because the journeyman have, for the most part, great attitudes, it makes it all the harder to cut them - a difficulty compounded by the fact a couple of them are All Whites.

I just can't see us being title contenders until we clean house and Herbert gets his recruitment sh*t together.

manny got no favour from durante on that third goal. durante went for header, missed it completely and that's what created the problem.

It is true that Durante missed the header but there is no doubt Manny lost his man.

I thought we'd lose by 5 goals to nil, so we did better than I expected. I miss Lochhead, and give Big Mac another go. Is there still a chance Simon E could join us???

I thought it was one of the most entertaining games of the season until the 71st minute. The ref did well in the 1st half to let some challenges go that would have been pulled up by other refs. I thought Leo played very well and that Pavlova needs to learn to finish. I thought Lia had a good game for his recent standards as well. I think Adelaide were just too good at home and they took their chances. Classy header from van Dyk.

seems a bit of a pattern that we can start well away (Heart, Adel) but fade in the second half

scoring a goal or two when we do dominate early would help!

but if not - how do Ricki and LT ensure that we don't fade in the 2nd half?

- is it having more defensive players on the bench when away? or is it that we need a better tactical response when honme teams come at us in the 2nd half?

can the squad be any fitter? (that 1st half effort they put in would have used a lot of energy)

Not blaming Paston but you just know he'll be disappointed in himself for not turning that one over, especially so soon after that fantastic save he made.

I'm not saying Nick Ward was to blame for the goal (cause he's not) I'm just saying that after he came on we conceded 3 goals in 7 minutes.

Judging by the 10 minutes before Adelaide scored their 1st, if we hadn't put a midfield player on for a striker the score could have blown out to 6 or 7.

Ward didn't do a lot wrong when he came on.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
