There is no doubt that Adelaide are a class side and I expected we would get our arse kicked. We played some really nice football in the first half but lost control of the midfield in the second. We could not cope with Pantelis shifting to the other flank and Dodds coming on.
Should Rickie have responded to their midfield changes earlier? who knows but that was the losing of the game.
Pavlovich did some good stuff.....but he is still young and raw. He struggled earlier on and was dispossesed 3 times in the first 20 minutes. As dickwad Slater said....the Nix's problem was they did not convert their pressure into points.
So what now? To me the season is on the knifes edge. Do we stumble along only picking up points at home and try in sneek into the top 6 or does the first half play show we have turned the corner.
Certainly there were encouraging signs. If we can put in a 90 minute effort like the first half we will beat sides home and away.
Top games from Leo and Greenacre......Hearfield did some good stuff too. Ifill looks like he is carrying an injury....he has lost his zip.

Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert admitted failing to find the back of the net in the first half of the 3-0 loss to Adelaide United ultimately cost his side on Friday night.

The Phoenix were impressive in the opening stanza and at times outplayed the league leader in what Herbert labelled as his side's best 45 minutes of the season.

Leo Bertos got plenty of the ball and tormented United's defence early, while Paul Ifil was always a constant threat.

The visitors had a golden chance just on the half hour when Chris Greenacre got on the end of a cross and flicked it toward the far post, only to be denied by United shot stopper Eugene Galekovic.

Herbert was left to lament a scoreless opening 45 minutes and conceded Wellington's downfall was their inability to hold a commanding position before the break despite a dominant first half performance.

"I wouldn't say it was even. Coming in at half time we should have been comfortably in control," he said.

"I think we worked really hard on the performance tonight. I think that was probably the best 45 we've put in for a wee while now, for no return."

"The chances we're getting I think you've got to put those in the back of the net. On the flipside of that, Adelaide were clinical in what they did tonight in the second half."

"Eugene is top drawer and a lot of the stuff he's done tonight to keep it 0-0 at half time. I still think if we'd had put one in, it's all in hindsight, but it would have been a different game."

While the Phoenix have the record for 23 consecutive matches at home without defeat, their record on the road has been questionable, although the opening 45 minutes told a different story.

Herbert denied Wellington's first half was a one-off, extraordinary performance, but what his side is expected to turn in every week.

"I don't think it was amazing, it was expected," he said.

"That's where we are and that's what we're capable of doing. You have to make your own luck but I don't think we got the bounce of the ball. I guess we take something from a positive point of view about what we can do against a side that is certainly setting the bench mark this year."

The Phoenix coach did admit he thought the final score was a flattering result for the Reds.

But, Herbert said matches are won over 90 minutes and and acknowledged Wellington failed to take their chances.

"I do [think the score is flattering)] but at the end of the day the score is 3-0," he said.

"I think we had our chance. We've come to a club that's started the season well and we should have been in a different position after the first 45 minutes."

"It's not a league where somebody is going to dominate you for 90 minutes and I think it's a huge disappointment for us tonight."

2 up front, playing quite well.

Substitution, back to one up front (playing for the draw Ricki?)...played garbage and instantly lost 3 goals.

Overall, they were better, but at the end of the day, we still got hammered 3-0 and 'taking some positives' from these defeats is no longer an option.

Still too predictable, and I don't think we've got the manager, or the personnel, to do much about it sadly.

I think thats a pretty fair summary

There were signs before the subsitution that things were falling apart.  I thought our defensive lines were aggressive in the first thirty minutes, instead of folding into zones we were closing down effectively and going in aggressively on poor touches to cause turnovers and give instant momentum to breakaway opportunities.  In the second half, I don't know if it was a matter of being stretched by Travis Dodd or that our midfield players got knackered, but we got no defensive output from the guys in front of defence to cause the turnovers that we were making us so resourceful in the first half.

If ever there was a 'game of two halves', sadly, that was it.  Sadly, because we were really should have made them pay a couple of times in that first half.  Pavlovic and Greenacre worked very very well positionally in that first half, Pavlovic though needs to tighten his ball control and lines in front of goal.  He did enough to set himself up for two goals at least, but the last touch or his awareness were off the mark.

Oh boy - where to next for us?  Good at home (although a couple of draws have cost us a few points that we badly need) and absolutely dreadful away from home.  We miss a player in midfield with very good ball control, first touch, and the ability to put in a clinical pass.  Brown and Lia will control zones but they won't provide irresistable balls or draw enough players off to provide the likes of Ifill and Bertos with enough space to lay the goal on.

Some players come out of the match with some good patches - Pavlovic missed the final touches but the combination with Greenacre shows promise.  Bertos in that first half was brilliant.  Muscat in the first half was exceptional.  Hearfield's first half also very good.  Second half, most of those blokes turned to custard and that was that.

Apart from last night's first half, isn't that our usual tactics?

Best first 45 minutes all season.

Bertos, running at players with his pace, brilliant. Who knew?

Brown, getting yellow cards is killing our midfield. Combine that with being AWOL a lot...

Bench Brown until he gets over his brain explosions, start Ward and Lia together, and keep Pav on up front with Greenie.

Thought Manny was unlucky with the 3rd goal getting caught out, was an otherwise great game for him IMO.

On a positive note I enjoyed the commentary last night. Took me fifteen minutes of the first half to realize what it was that was making me enjoy the game so much . . . and then I realized there was no Dewhurst.

To be honest i thought it was the most enjoyable first half to watch away from home from a phoenix perspective. We were showing a really good high tempo attitude that i think has been lacking from the other away games. Bertos and Greenace stood out for me. Unfortunately our defense couldn't cope in the second.

It's just that some also have very high expectations as opposed to us with low ones.

On Fox after the game the Adelaide coach was asked why the nix had them in the 1st. half. Answer-- our back four was too far from the midfield, and this created space for Wellington. We changed things at halt time.
Ricki was asked what happened in the 2nd half. Answer-- I don't know.
As mentioned by SteveO, Ricki made the error of taking a striker off, and it changed the whole game.

Err, because they play different positions.

To be fair Leggy, we had begun to be overrun long before we took the striker off - this probably led to the decision to remove the striker to try and help sure up the midfield that was getting dominated. Other than that, your point stands.

Seems clear to me that Rojas probably isn't going to cut it anytime soon?

As stated also, he's a left winger and appears to be a completely different kind of player.

I thought Pavlovic offered something a bit different and it was a refreshing change from the usual garbage, for the first half at least.

I'm telling you if we sign Elliott everything will be better and we'll win the league!
Maybe not, but we could have used him. Good to finally see Bertos running at defenders and doing the good he can do. I dislike Hearfield less. Hope Jade North learnt his lesson. Play better! You can pay me half as much to screw up slightly more often.
