What do you think temperatures in England are like at this time of year?

And as an aside, it was 20 degrees here on Saturday...

true forget they get summer sometimes.

So you'd rather start Vinny there who played a couple of preseason games in defence before spending a season on his arse?

Yep. What's his injury got to do with it?

the fact that he spent a whole season without game time at RB ?????????????????????????????

Oh, so he shouldn't have played on Sunday or be considered for any position because he was injured a year ago.

Even so, imo Muscat was the, er, least worst against of the defence against Newcastle and OK in the first half against Perth. In the 2nd 45 he didn't enjoy sliding round on that greasy surface (shades of the Melbourne debacle in the rain last season) but I put this down to him being from Melbourne: it only rains here twice a year.

I rate the guy. He was a standout for all but one or two games he played last season. He's highly motivated, dogged and confident getting forward. Leave that defence be.

I prefer Brown over Ferrante or Lia, but Mad Dog Brown, not that lost little boy Brown we saw in Newcastle.

I think Muscat will be fine and deserves to retain his place. Sure he's made a couple of mistakes but they all have and he offers just as much as Loch. Would like to see Lia in for Ferrante, good touches at the end.

Whats costa got to do to earn even a bench this year? uncle steve2009-08-18 01:35:45

Become a better player in Ricki's eyes would be a good start, especially seen by his comments about maybe bringing in Marcos he appears to be behind him in the pecking order.

He need Ifil or Greenacre to get injured, even then he will probaly be behind the Asian kid aswell.

Hope he gets a chance, but he will need to take it, or i can not see him being resigned at the end of the year.

Get a bigger bench.

Though Daniel is slowly making his way to the end of the bench and might fall off it soon, especially when Chen sits on it

That's very harsh.

Costa -> Daniel, should really be on the bench already.

I feel that after a season out of action we shouldn't stick him in a position he's not entirely used to, start him off in midfield and let him work his way back into the fold after a year without playing.

Would like to see him get a longer run alongside McKain on sunday.

Since the end of last season Lia has played and trained as much as anyone. Why are people thinking he's not up to the others because of an injury pre season 2008?
I'm not a huge Lia fan but anyone who tells me he should ease his way back, or he's been injured is joking surely??

I think Ifill would have had enough practice going from crap temperatures (England) to hot temps (Barbados)

I think our fitness was a bit poor on Sunday as we were trying to play a very high pressure game (which worked for most of the first half) but in the 2nd McKain especially tired badly and there was a lot of space in midfield.

Since when are Kiwis used to playing in 25-30 in August.

I think this is a winner
i dno how pasty would go on the wing... (regret telling that gag)
seriously i think the error was making tim brown in a position of authority in season 1. hes not very flash and should have to earn his spot week in week out.
think hes a bit arrogant and would love to see him work his arse off and prove me wrong a.k.a his last few games when he played for the jets.
mkain and brown cannot play together, it just doesnt work and as a pairing give away to much space to the opposition CMs. browns just a chopper for me.
ferrante needs a chance to get confidence, hes not much better than tim but may fit in around mkains style of play better with ferrante nipping around him.

Yeah it will be warmish, hot for some.  I hope the squads fit.
Looking forward to being there in the sun and another three points for the Nix

Interesting. People starting to post teams without Daniel either starting OR on the bench.

Is Daniel - nice guy and all that - going to spend this season on the outer?

Can't see him getting much, if any, game time with the current squad.

Or have I missed something?
Permalink Permalink

You haven't missed anything. With Diego coming along and now Chen and Ifill Daniel is getting pushed back further as there are more players to cover his spot and can create and defend. Leo's a certainty these days so unless there are injuries Daniel may not even see the bench much.
It's hard coming on in a game but twice this season now he hasn't done much

I am a bit worried about getting overrun down both wings - this has been problematic in both games so far, and I think Brisbane are better in those areas than both Newcastle and Perth.

Although it's tempting to go all out attack, this could have disasterous consequences IMO.

Best to do what we can to stop them playing first and foremost, and hit on the counter where possible. A draw in Brisbane would be a commendable result.

I would quite like to see us go for an all out attacking line up, hearfield RM and diego CM get rid of Ferrante. wont happen though, i think brown will be in for ferrante

Going for an 'all out attacking line up' at a place we've traditionally struggled at against a team with more quality than us going forward would just be silly.

My team:

Muscat/Lia-Siggy-Dura-Lochy
Ferrante/Hearfield-McKain-Lia-Super Leo
Ifill-Greenacre

Bench:

Jiangchen/Costa
Brown
Diego
Crowther

On the hyundia A-League site it says that Ifil is injured and in doubt so he may not play, also Herbert is hinting that we may lay a little more defensively becasue he is wary about Brisbane's counter attacking abilities.

I hope he doesn't send us to far back in to our shell as i hate to see us play a defensive minded game, we always lose when we do this.

If Ifil is out look for a 4 -2 - 3 - 1 formation.

I'd be happy with that line up so long as the Hearfield/Bertos arrows go back as well. Great win last week but we were horribly exposed down Muscat's side and it wasn't all down to him, our mid-field was narrow and not a lot of help out there for Muscat, a better team than Perth will exploit that more effectively.

A quick google of 'Paul Ifill groin' (I hope no one checks my search history..) turns up the fact that groin niggles are nothing new to him. I guess we've been the luckiest club so far in terms of injuries so one had to come sooner or later. Hopefully it is just a one game thing.

I wonder how Farina will play this one. Roar has been playing a heavily attacking style so far but it's only netted them the one point. With that and the loss of Tiatto in mind he may be feeling the pressure and opt for a more conservative approach initially, which with the heat/humidity and our possible lack of Ifill could help us to stay in the game.

That's my hope anyway. The last 20 minutes could be crucial.

btw, anyone know who'll be taking our penalties this season?

McKain and Brown in the midfield combo is worse than having Lampard and Gerrad combo. It's like comparing not loading bullets to firing blanks and achieving nothing in the process.

Ifill's groin is a couple of weeks of decent physio and water fitness workout so he should be back for the match after.

Hearfield is likely to start, I guess.

I'd vote Super Leo. Would love for him to get 7+ goals this season. Along with Ifill and Greenacre with 9+ each.

Despite scoring a screamer I don't think the club should risk using Bertos for penalties, sitters he scrwed up against the Roar and Gangzhou spring to mind

Penalties  - would have to be Ifill with his shot wouldn't it? Followed by either Diego or Greenie. If Daniel was on he's decent, but probably will be more likely to be off than on

Penalties, I would hope Greenacre first, being the striker, then Diego, Daniel, Bertos, Ferrante.

And if that doesn't work, get Paston to have a go :P

Sorry should have read further up the thread. Ricki feels confident of depth but his work rate was pretty good so hopefully others will step up
