Be interesting if Brown and Ifill are out, with Chen unavailable we're down to 17 to select a 15 man squad from... I wonder who gets spot 15. Hard News2009-08-20 11:22:26

I'd take both kids, but I would be surprised if Ricki takes either (purely based on history).

He surely has to take at least one - otherwise we might have to see Mulligan come on, God forbid.

But yeah, I'd take both and leave Mulligan and Daniel here.

Unless ricki reverts back to something more defensive, which I hope he doesn't. Lets create our own style of play that is attractive and dangerous.

I would like to see Lia starting though, maybe for Brown or even Muscat but dont think it will happen just yet

But you've gone back to more defensive by playing Brown with McKain and virtually the same as the first game, with exception of Diego

Away from home against one of the best attacking sides in the comp..

That's the side for me
got to remember perth opened us up plenty so the D vs a faster Brisbane side needs to be stronger
Would have Lia in for Muscy but not sure re fitness levels?
Some doubt about Ifill too - groin

Ifill in doubt for Phoenix
Wednesday, 19 August 2009
by Emma Stoney, Sportal
Paul Ifill

Wellington striker Paul Ifill is in doubt for the Phoenix's Hyundai A-League match against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

The Barbadian international, who scored his first goal for the club in last weekend's 2-1 win against Perth Glory, missed training on Wednesday with a groin niggle.

He was substituted with around 15 minutes to go in the match at Westpac Stadium with tightness in his groin.

Midfielder Tim Brown is another under an injury cloud. His groin problem kept him out of Sunday's victory.

"We've got some depth in the squad and it'll be opportunities for other players but hopefully we will get at least one of them there," coach Ricki Herbert said.

Goalkeeper Reece Crowther and midfielder Daniel also sat out training due to illness but Herbert was confident the pair would be available for selection.

The coach has welcomed the arrival of new signing Jiang Chen who had his first run with his new team-mates in the New Zealand capital on Wednesday.

However, the Chinese under-23 player won't be considered for the trip to Brisbane given his lack of time with the side.

"He's had his fitness test this morning and he's joined the group for a session here. It's good to have him here," said Herbert.

"He's settled in pretty quickly. We'll be patient with him. I think he can certainly be an impact for us. We'll probably look around the next home game against Adelaide to have him part of that."

While attacking, entertaining football was the order of the day in Wellington last weekend, the Phoenix coach hinted a slightly more conservative approach could be adopted for this weekend's match.

"I think Brisbane are very good on the counter and have quick players up front too so we'll have to be conscious of that," he said.

"They'll probably be slightly different to what Perth were going to challenge us with and we've never gone there (to Brisbane) and done that well either."

"I'm not sure there will be a lot of personnel changes. I think just slightly different responsibilities, at least for the front players."

"They will be desperate to try and get their season started. We're in good form and we travel there with a lot of confidence off the back of Perth and we'll look to get across there and get three points."

Whats the bet the three "promoted" will be the three dropped.........Id be pleased if Ferrante is dropped and Costa is in as cover for Ifill.

No point going all out for a point with 5 across the middle...

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Perhaps Ifill is touch and go and they want to see how he is tomorrow before travelling?

Just to be pedantic it should be JIANG Chen (since family names come first in Chinese).

[QUOTE=Royal]It's going to take a way better effort than what we saw here as our form over in Aussie is suspect and we're playing a better side.

I'd prefer Lia at right back as I get a feeling that HN's son could give Muscat nightmares

If Durante or Sigmund gave Muscat some COVER the problem would all but disappear.....The  central defence stayed " very central" for most of the match, leaving so much space in behind Muscat, when only marking 1 striker only [ very poorly at times] Would start the same side as against Perth

As they should. Anyway, that's not quite true, since I recall two distinct occasions when Sigmund covered Muscat very well, shovelling their attacker right out to the byline and breaking down the attack. I would not expect Muscat to have such a bad 45 again for quite some time. And in all honesty I'd prefer to have a player performing poorly maybe 1 out of every 10 games (as I reckon Muscat has) than just so-so nearly all of the time, as a few current players I could name are.

A draw would be a huge effort I think. Don't know if we have ever managed a draw or win vs the Roar in Brisbane?

How long ago was the China trip?
You have to get acclimatised to weather conditions so if you played in 30 degrees 2 months ago, it would be as useful as tits on a bull this weekend.

I remember that game when Tommy Oar scored a free kick in the dying seconds to win 2-1. Bloody annoying.

3-2 actually. And Durante got sent off for the foul. Where is that little sh*te Oar these days?

Sounds hopeful that Paul Ifill will be right for Sunday, Dom Post today, cant wait to see him and Greenacre and Super Leo getting the better of Craig Moore etc

Ifill better not be risking his injury and we lose him for longer. I'd prefer he sat out one game than to play and then sit out 3. Hope he's 100%

Good news on Ifill, theres a bit of a buzz over the dutch about this guy
Permalink Permalink
over 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Ifill picked up a groin niggle during the first half against Perth, which led to him being substituted with 20 minutes to go. It has hindered him at training this week but he did some ball work yesterday and is confident he'll be right for Brisbane.

Errrrr....

I'm slightly disappointed!

Hmm, perhaps we have now confirmed the reason for the groin strain - too much ball work!

from the Phoenix site - article about Lockhead

Looks like the young kiwis have missed out again

Only 15 named so if they make a late call not to play Ifill then the squad is one short?

Looking forward to seeing that front four playing together again, plus will be interesting to see if Locky can show us something more along the lines of the first season, as he talks about in the article

must be tricky trying to play forward with Super Leo running the show in front of you

yeah - I don't get how he isn't ever given a shot, even when we are down in numbers. I think that is definitely one of Rickis flaws as a coach.

Ifill will be ok hopefully, but surely we should be playing a striker on when he comes off?

Wondering if Chen is good enough to push them for starts, then imagine an attack of
                     McKain
Super Leo        Diego        Ifill
           Greenacre       Chen

Lol Imagine the attacking firepower there.

We seem to be the only club not willing to give our youth a go. (except perhaps Melbourne and CCM)

I'm sure they will play at some point this season because of our small squad though

Surely Ifill will play. You wouldnt take him there without there being a better than even chance that he will be recovered enough to play.

And if he only does half a game, then Daniel or Hearfield can cover.

It isnt about youth in my opinion, it is about ability and skill, and at the moment Ricki doesnt rate Costa above those players, so that is that.

If he shows up enough in training that he has the goods, then he will be there

If he isnt good enough to grab a first team place through the whole season, well, so be it. Professional sport is a hard business.
