I would be open to a foreign coach, however we would really want the coaching staff to have a good understanding of the local competition. I think Gouldy provides that (although was in aussie all last season). A foreigner would need to have a good kiwi backroom staff in my opinion
Nix vs CCM, 11th Nov 4:30pm (+ T'Dubs vs. Canterbury curtain raiser)

Why? So the likes of Lochhead will still have a job in professional football?
Tough game that. We werent so bad, but were blunt attacking wise
The Mariners were very good defensively and shut us down well. We dont have the combinations/communications yet to get through such strong lines
A number of times I thought, what is Ifill doing back there doing the defending, will mean he has a long way to travel back to score. I expect him to be scoring. Needs to be up front more and not working so hard so he is ready to create chances.
I am quite concerned as to where we will be after the All White game and the travelling we have to do in the next few weeks. Hope we dont get right out of touch with the top 6

I like our players but they don't seem to be very smart. I thought having a bigger squad would make players fight for positions, but it appears that isn't the case. I think we need to mix things up a bit, if Lindsay is fit, give him a go. hell even chuck Downey in there.
Interesting how both Wellington teams lost by the same margin.
Shit, first news that one of the Nix's staunchest fans left the ground before full time, now calls being made to "chuck Downey in there".
It's despondency and desperation from all quarters.
To be fair to the team, we were doomed as soon as we lost the toss. Every time that happens we may as well not expect the 3 points
When we start playing toward the fever end - we're doomed. Much better playing toward the fever in the 2nd half
Where are the stat's -for say the last 4 years-table position after 6 round to back up "we are crap"
League table thread has either a pessimistic or optimistic view.......other years had more promise I think...and given this was our 1 home game in the middle of two lots of two aways I think we deserved better.
You lost me at Brockie and try.
Overall we weren't that bad though. Just needed some creativity from Herbert. It's not working as is.
Ive noticed Stein also seems to be on a different wave length than everyone else. Keeps making runs one way and we put a through ball the other way, or he'll do the same.
I noticed that as well, and not just with Waffles. Often a number of runners moving quickly into good space with an arm in the air but the through ball rarely gets sent early while they are still chasing our runs. Usually there is a cut back and pass the other way - or backwards - giving them time to mark up. Its harder for players at ground level to see the gaps we all see but on having a look at videos after the match maybe the guys can get a sense of how everyone is moving and try a few. That goes for crosses as well where so many times it floats past the back post where nobody seems to ever lurk....
Contrary to a lot of opinions I thought it was a pretty even game and that it could have gone either way - that it why it was so damn frustrating. We had some chances as well - and it was against top of the league team which got 7 goals in its last outinng.... It wasn't like the Melbourne game where we were definitely far second.
Thought the ref did really well. Nice change.
That's because our strikers are making runs too early while or midfield is too deep.
As soon as Smith or Siggy have the ball, everyone makes a run, before there's even time to see the run. We need more dynamic movement, fowards and wingers looking to run on the second ball, not always the first. And some linkage in midfield.
Damn I hope Sanchez can save us.
Paston out for Moss
Smith out for Lia ( never thought I'd say that)
Play 442
= win.

did anyone else think that Iffy was not particularly keen to pass to Totori?

especially so for the first few minutes but also others in team..then they realised there were no other options up there. Still had a decent shot.....I mean cross

True blue - it's not surprising the angst given this is the sixth season and we're heading for rock bottom already.
Time to bring in the young contingent, the seasoned professionals have had their day.
For me retain international stars like Huysegems, Fenton, Brockie, Sigmund, Durante, Muscat and replace the rest including Ifill, Lia, Lochhead, Bertos, Boxall, Totari......look to the future through the academy!
It's getting a bit like Arsenal, isn't it? Each season there is renewed hope that this time you'll win something and once again the club's long term coach fails to deliver. I think RH should stick to the AW and let someone else have a go at the Phoenix. He seems to have run out of ideas and is just shuffling the pack not playing to a strategic game plan. It would probably mean an overseas coach which wouldn't be a bad thing - a fresh pair of eyes run over all the players. I think Ifill has had his day, Lochhead is well past sell-by and Totari never was.
I still can't understand why Aaron Clapham isn't in the squad, was anyone from the Nix watching him in the curtain raiser?
I don't think anyone would mind a mid-table struggle for the Phoenix if, as you say, the team was chock full of young New Zealand talent. Herbert is not the coach for that. I know it's a real long shot but I like what Declan Edge is doing with youngsters at Waikato.
Cheer up everyone.
Now THAT would be like Woolwich.

Successive 20 yards passes dont scare any team, particularly when half of them are square or backwards.
Any defense can be opened up with just three short first time passes. There have been some good examples of this in the A League this season.
When you are the Phoenix, and playing at home, you have to go out and try and win, even if you risk losing.
Stop having a game plan that is blatantly 'get it wide and cross it'?
Was hoping that a former striker as assistant coach might encourage fresh ideas when it comes to attack.
Nice avatar chrispy!

I couldn't agree more. City too suffer from far too many square and back passes just to keep possession but at the cost of forward momentum. You don't mind losing providing you're trying to win the game. I got the feeling watching CCM that they didn't have any fear of playing the Phoenix at the caketin and easily contained them. Going on the Phoenix's away record, if they lose the home psychological advantage of the past then even mid-table looks unrealistic. I know City intimidate opponents at Kiwitea Street and it's like a 12th man. Part of that's the atmosphere generated by the fans. We are used to success and expect it, albeit at the lower level. I thought the Phoenix crowd sounded a bit flat last weekend. Have expectations been dampened so quickly? I suspect you're now down to the hard core supporters. It only takes a few losses to lose the fair weather spectators in NZ.
You've really got to sort out your forward line. Replacing Huysegems with Totori was indicative of a lack of ideas. I know he's a bit of a strange one but Wynton Rufer might make a good coach for the Phoenix as far as improving the strike rate up front. He's probably the best striker we've ever produced. RH could then be shifted to Director of Football.

My circle of football fans have just lost confidence with Herbert - that's all. That's why most of them didn't go.
Sorry -that sounds like a cop out.
Do they support the team or the coach or the individual players (or even Welnix)?
My views of Ricki or any individual player are irrelevent - it's the team I go to support.

Me too........Regardless of the manager, players etc ets its the team. After many years of watching lower league football in the UK its the team I go to watch. I might moan and bitch after the game about the manager, the tactics, individual players....and even the owners but first and foremost you cant beat watching live football...especially the team you support

Fair piece by Fred Woodcock. If you believe half what you hear about previous slumps, Herbert's been told to open his ears to advice, and it's worked. Have no idea what influence Greenacre has.

I like the sentiments. It's always sad when people stop coming to games because the going has got tough. I've seen it with City fans too. Fortunately we have a very small ground so even if only 500 turn up that fills our stand. A couple of thousand packs the place. Westpac stadium is such a monster. Even a good crowd of 12,000 as with your opener this season still leaves 2/3 of the stadium empty. A sea of empty yellow seats is not a good look and must effect the atmosphere. Both Auckland and Wellington lack purpose built 15,000 seat football stadiums, which would be a perfect size for the Phoenix (losing the thread, I know).
A friend of mine is flying back from a holiday in NY at midnight on the 24th so he can watch the City vs Waitak local derby on the 25th. There's a real fan. No matter what, you're there. Takes a lot to keep me from a game at Kiwitea Street. That's how it should be.
