Funny old game football..innit?
By the tone of many of the posts you would think we were 3rd from bottom rather than third from top. However watching the team now does seem to lack the buzz we got when we finished 4th a few years ago. Yes, we are pleased we win away, yes, its great that we can boss most of the sides in the comp, yes our defense is outstanding. But if you were at the 4kings last night and heard the collective groans or saw the collective face into palms you know that something is not quite right. When your midfield can hardly string two passes together, when they cough up the ball on such a regular basis, when another cross hits row Z you do start to question whats up.
Its fairly much the same team that had the great run to nearly make the final a few years ago. What is blatently obvious now that at least 4 or 5 of them are well past their use by date. We have quality in many positions...this quality will get us well into the final series. The failure to recruit and refresh the squad will ultimately mean we wont go all the way.
Ricki has had several opportuities to strenghten the squad....he has chosen not to. His blind loyalty to some of the older guys who are no longer up to it will cost us dearly in the long run.
Really. Is that when the owner had no money to buy players, or when the owners won't spend money to buy players?
Thats actually a myth. I have heard Gareth Morgan say on several occasions that if Ricki had wanted players Welnix would have supported him.
Now there's an insight...and an opportunity to offer a contrasting view.
Ricki has put his faith in his Nix squad, each individual has a role, with a shared responsibility for the right outcome. More often they have delivered this season, only a few times they haven't. Turning to the chequebook as a means of sorting out performance issues flys in the faith of that philosophy.Barring injury replacement, ain't going to happen.
The culture within the squad seems to be along the lines of
"WE are the Wellington Phoenix, WE are good enough to go all the way, JUST AS WE ARE!"
I admit that, at times all I see are occasional flashes of brilliance, of scrambling, under pressure but ultimately effective defence, amid a swathe of glaring mistakes, clattering, clumsy tackles, turning over of possession, slow, aging players being outrun by younger fitter opposition, etc etc. and it can be frustrating.
What I don't see ( and is what has got the Nix to where they are this season so far, IMO )is the unity of purpose and commitment, along with personal responsibility each and every Nix player seems to possess, that has engendered a strong team spirit so often talked about.
Will it be enough to take them all the way...or will they be found wanting?
Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!
