Go Dani, make them suck eggs

SMH "RESEARCHING Wellington's big threat didn't take long for a new-look Gold Coast United in the lead-in to their season opener against the Phoenix at Skilled Park today. At one stage Wellington's attacking midfielder Dani Sanchez was right under their noses.

''We were actually close to signing him,'' United captain Michael Thwaite said. ''So we know he's very dangerous. I think he adds something to their side that they have never had before.''

Sanchez - a product of Spanish club Malaga CF - was on trial for weeks with United in the off-season but Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg opted to sign Dutchman Peter Jungschlager. If Bleiberg was worried the decision would come back to bite him this weekend, he hid it ahead of their showdown.

''I don't have one ounce of regret about it at all but Dani Sanchez, when he was with us, was renowned for scoring some outstanding goals,'' Bleiberg said of the 26-year-old, who played under former Sydney FC coach Terry Butcher at Scotland's Inverness Caledonian Thistle last term. ''I just hope that he won't have one of those days on Sunday.''

United have enough to worry about with a drama surrounding Maceo Rigters's availability. The Dutch import is still sweating on a last-gasp clearance to play. ''Maceo's situation is a bit unknown because we are still waiting for [visa] paperwork,'' Bleiberg said.

''We will put out our strongest team and if Maceo is not available then the likes of James Brown and Ben Halloran are more than capable.''

Thats the best I could find. The 6th and final goal, featuring the first known rendition of the eternal Fever chant, "We want seven!"

Same person but earlier it seems.

Also proof that the FZ doesn't even know how to sing "Stand Up" - ergo it's fubar-ed before it's even started.

Uhmm yesterday the 3 flights were Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.. and i remember this cause straight away Dad thought they were flying on the Brisbane plane. So the only reason I got autographs was cause the planes were at the same time..

Great odds, the TAB have no confidence in us at all. GCU are probably the easiest first round opponents possible.

i would confidently say a 2-1 win to us (Sanchez and Ifill), think the boys are going to be fired up like anything out to prove a point to the non-footballing public and put all the ownership saga behind us, wouldn't be surprised also if Terry's name is thrown in if we win.

Would like us to win by 2 goals (or more) as that would send us to the top of the table!
