I don't think we should be too scared of Victory. Other than Rojas, Archie, Traore, Finkler (who is out), and to a lesser extent Nabout, they haven't been playing all that well. I think our best way of playing them is to press when their defenders have it, you are likely to turn over ball high up the field, but then the defense has to drop more quickly when/if they get it through to their midfield and not under immediate pressure. It was that second part we didn't do against them in the earlier round and they got in behind us far too easily. This is the sort of game I would even consider playing 3 at the back, Melbourne aren't playing any genuine strikers so having 4 back there will be leaving dead players a lot.

Playing high with 3 at the back will be a spanking and a half. I laugh at no genuine strikers. Where does Rojas sit on the golden boot? How many has Archie scored in his career?

It wasn't a comment on their ability, it was a comment on what position they are playing. DbCheckRunner, it is a different position to a genuine striker. Victory have played every game this season with a Flores or Nabout as a "false 9". With four at the back, all in a line, many of them will doing nothing for much of the match.
If they are playing as wide forwards, what is the merit in giving them more space down the flanks by having only three defenders at the back?  And Nabout has hardly been playing a false 9 role, just because he the player to take the field when Flores gets subbed off doesn't mean he plays in the same role as Flores does.
Because your center backs are not marking a striker you are able to cover them both with 3 at the back, and in some ways you naturally stay inside them more instinctively. Nabout seems to be playing a similar role to Flores to me, he tends to follow the ball out wide more and is much more likely to run or shoot.

And remember, from all this you have an extra man in midfield.

All this is ignoring two key factors - pace which they have and we really don't, and the ability for Melbourne to get the ball upfield quickly on the counter, which is how they score a lot of goals.

I don't think the 'defend high up the park' is really something that suits our players at all.

Also, who would that extra man in the midfield actually be? Lindsey? There's nobody else that we could put in the midfield.

On defence I don't want Siggy and Durante alongside each other in a line. I would push Siggy forward to harass their central attacking players rather than have one of our midfielders do it. When we have posssession it would be back to a 4-3-3.

happy manny only got 3. still a silly thing to do. id be happy to see smith back in the engine, hes very useful on the end of our long balls. totori or waffles? i dunno, i wanna say totori, but id imagine, waffles maybe be a safer bet, as we are coached by nothing-outrageous-Ricki. still I cant wait to see how we go. we were solid for a chunk last week, if we can take that, cut out the bullshit ball control in the middle, paston plays another blinder we can be in here with a chance.

im predicting goals, and unfortunately cards.

Seriously? Many of the soft goals we have conceded have occurred because Siggy has pushed forward in front of the defence and failed to make a tackle on the player. Think the Berisha goal at Westpac, and Dura's own goal.

Siggy would be fine, that's where he's spent most of this season, 'specially when the opposition have been scoring goals.  Seriously tho', Siggy at DM with Boxall in at CB wouldn't be the end of the world.
[Not that we'll see that.  Will be interesting what tactics Ricki uses for this one, because the game plan was appalling last time.  If he still thinks the high D can work with our current squad ... we will have a real measure on him as coach.  While I am happy to see Sanchez and Smith play together in midfield I've not got a lot of confidence in Lia in the DM role against MBV's pace. We've got more pace at the top end of the field this year, but not at D.]

Completely different situation. Not planned, Durante was at LCB and Berisha is a center forward, which is a position Melbourne aren't playing with.

also interesting to see how Ange arranges his midfield now he will be missing gui.

Will he add another attacking minded player or look to stabilise the midfield?

My guess is Flores will move to Finklers spot and Nabout will come in at Flores spot.

Edit: But who knows, maybe Marco will get his wish and play as a CAM.

Wouldn't be surprised if Celeski came in for Finkler with Milligan coming back in next to Bru - Nabbout can't run out a game yet; 60 mins and hes spent.

MV will look a lot better with Milligan back; has been one of their best this season.

Could work except Bru has been really crap. Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't even make it onto the bench. It's a decent point about fitness because Flores has been struggling as well. If Nabout does start just playing it around at the back is a decent tactic. Pretty sure he will try to run everything down hard.

Edit - it would probably be Broxham ahead of Bru and is an option.

yeah milligan easily been one of their best - also interesting to see if they do go for a replacement for finkler - and whether they would look at a defender - or even if they can pull in jade north as was rumoured

Permalink Permalink

is jade north like some kind of alaegue yoyo?. they probably will try and get a new keeper, they've only got 3 on their books. or is it 4 now

Didn't Manny Moosecat just get 3 weeks off for "Attacking" football?

Almost the same starting line up we had Rnd 1, just swapping Manny for Lia and Smith for Sanchez. So guess it will be back to 4-1-3-2.

[Edit: Forgot the Smith/Sanchez swap.]

We will have a much higher pass completion rate with Smith in midfield

Jason pine said they are having huysegems brockie and....  Totori up front. Fenton to drop into midfield. So still 4-3-3

Was put to him after that, that it is probably a 4-4-2. I would think we are going back to the 4-1-3-2 again, swapping Manny/Smith for Lia/Sanchez.

With knowing Totori and huysegems starting i would go:

GK: PASTON

RB: LINDSAY

CB: SIGMUND

LB: DURANTE

DM: LIA

RM: BERTOS

CM: SANCHEZ

LM: FENTON

AM: TOTORI

ST: HYSEGEMS

ST: BROCKIE

Now Iknow that it looks like a wobbly back line but Dura is better playing even at lb then Mr slowmo. And give Lindsay a go against victory. If he stuffs up then so what. Everyone knew it would be a tough ask. Better than stuffing up against like the heart. As for Totori playing a central attacking role, he's a dangerous runner why not give him a chance to take on the soul of their defense. Would provide better attacking chances than taking on the flanks. Also give bertos another go in midfield

 Starting line up announced:

Mark Paston, Leo Bertos, Andrew Durante (captain), Ben Sigmund, Tony Lochhead, Louis Fenton, Vince Lia, Dani Sanchez, Benji Totori, Jeremy Brockie, Stein Huysegems. Substitutes: Alex Smith, Cameron Lindsay, Michael Boxall, Griffin McMaster.

If we are playing with two up front my instinct is that they should be Huygesems and Fenton.

* Fenton is a better aerial target than Brockie in spite of being shorter

* Brockie has the better long range shot

* Brockie and Huygesems have never seemed to gel that much as strike partners, so best to try another combo

Really the only reason you wouldn't do this is that Brockie doesn't seem particularly keen on being part of the midfield game. That's no excuse!

Thats an extremely attacking midfield. Good, but who's trying to nullify the ball getting to Marco and co? Just Vinnie?

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

gonna be a very free flowing game by the sounds of it.  Hopefully Dani tracks back. Fenton is pretty good at tracking back so I suppose  we won't be as open  as it might look on paper.  Looking forward to this, nice to see us going on the attack away from home.
