No-go on Logo
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Wellington Phoenix owner Terry Serepisos has been forced into an embarassing u-turn over the Wellington franchise's logo.

Media in Australia have compared the Phoenix logo with "something from a 1940s fascist jamboree".

The logo Serepisos unveiled last month features a similar bird, similar draping wings and similar head to Adolf Hilter's Third Reich logo.

The only thing missing is the Nazi swastika.

In another embarassing twist the original logo - designed by the Greek owner's cousin - is strikingly similar to that of Greek side AEK Athens FC.

Both logos are black and yellow and both feature a bird with draping wings.

Last night a Nix source confirmed a reworked logo will be presented to A-League bosses this week before being represented to the public.

it's unfortunate people read these things into what is just a football clubs logo, of course there will always be similarities with existing things, u dont see America changing its emblems with eagles in them just because Adolf did that 2. Oh and add the swastika its a buddist or hindu symbol for good luck so i hear.

Where was that Benny ? The Herald ?

I'd hope the FFA aren't listening to a couple of whiners, but it won't surpise me if they are.  Hopefully that is the old wings spread logo, not the new Wings incorporated in to the shield one.

and AEK's logo looks nothing like our one!

It really doesn't look like Phoenix, see website attached, but has soothing Greek music too.

As unfortunate as it would be to see the logo changed (I like the current one), the MLS  team DC United had to change their initial logo because it was also compared to a nazi symbol. So it isn't a new idea.

yeah ive seen that one too, im guessing its the colour of it as well, the black and red. its a shame we still associate colours and imagery with the nazi's but i guess its best to change it so WPFC doesnt get associated with fascists etc

The report was yesterday by stuff.co.nz :(

Think its stupid aswell myself. And why would it be embarrassing? Its a logo at the end of the day. I care more about the people that have the logo on their chest than the logo itself

I can't see what the fuss is about. This is just a piece of smart marketing by Terry S. The first logo was deliberately below par so that it can be burned and a new one rise from the ashes.

Expect this to be a common theme with Phoenix related activity in order to reinforce the brand. All decisions will initially appear to be sh*t so that they can be "burned" and new ones take their place. The man's a genius!

This also cements my view that a dead ex-premiership player such as David Rocastle (1967-2001), Marc-Vivien Foe (1975-2003) or Justin Fashanu (1961-1998) will be among the Phoenix' first signings.

Wait, it is today Sherbert's supposed to announce his new signings right?

Hope he does a good job, I wanna see some quality Aussies announced long with the good kiwis.

If Mulligan and/or Vicelich are announced amid the kiwi signings, thats a job very well done. The article about Bertos on the front page gave me a chuckle - in a way theyve done us a favour by keeping Plodder.

I believe that article was from Sunday News. We don't publish unreliable anti Wellington speculation.

It's a shame for you guys and the league that they won't accept the logo. It was by far the best logo of the league. For some reason the FFA only like sh*t logos. So unfortunately I have a feeling your logo will be in line with the rest of them.

almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Most of the Aussies seemed to like the logo - even saying it was the best in the league - so it seems only the media is against it, and I would suggest its the anti-football lot is the media mentioned, who get on the back of anything remotely negative and turn it into a mass anti-football movement

Is there any conformation on this? I personally didn't like it. If they're looking for an 'A League style' logo/ American how bout

almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

I hope the logo is only slightly 'reworked' as stated in the article, they should leave the crest as it is and only change the bird thinghy

almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I really don't like that if its the real new logo. It has too much yellow, and not enough black. Also, it appears to be very similar to the Roar logo, only not as good.

I thought the other one was fine, 2nd only to the Mariners one, which I really liked.

No it isnt, that was created on the 4th April, seeing as this news was released yesterday, they didnt know this  news.

I think the logo posted by the above is more likely what it'll be, a lot more 'cartoony'
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
its got a better head than the previous logo thats for sure, maybe surgically attach it to the old logo or something??? i do hope they keep the shield style tho but i cant imagine theyd keep it just because whatever they did with it it will still look the same as the old one and AEK's and adolf's etc etc.

I think the FFA werent happy with the stripes either, as they want everyone to have this stupid reebok kit.

I was merely pointing about that there was already a thread about the new logo.

So this thread is about the 'NEW' new logo that no-one has even seen yet so it is impossible to even comment on then.

I'll come back when there is something to talk about then.  Oh...I won't be able to will I...as the thread will be old by then, and we will all be on another thread by then anyway talking about another new logo.

I'll try and find out and let you all know.
I didn't like how the article said "embarrasing" (which it isn't) and I don't like "Nix"!

I reckon you'll have to cop the reebok sh*te for a season then, like us you'll get the stripes like we got the 'V'
Shame about the logo, FFA seem to have a preference for yankee franchise bollox rather than their own identity!!
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I think it is not a bad thing, we can rework the logo and put up a even better one.  logo is just a logo, don't worry too much.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
but a good logo will help people identify more with the club, if its sh*t people probably wont
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Yeah I agree, what i mean is surely the second logo will be better than the first, and I'm more concerned about the player recruitment thing.

Part of me does wonder if this whole beat up is related to the article on here last week saying the wings had to go, so now the 'new logo' they are prattling on about is the one in my sig.

Agree and agree... The Sunday malcomson strikes again.

This is pissing me off no end. We have or had a great logo and the FFA has got involved unnecessarily, I can't believe how much they dictate what should be done. They should merely set standards and guidelines and let clubs operate within these...

The Phoenix name is okay...but the logo was great.

Can't the FFA give us a break - we are behind the 8 ball already so the team and management need to be able to get on with it.

Also I'd buy a shirt or a jacket with a cool sheild on it but I wouldn't buy an American, cartoon or sanisted logo, if I wanted that I support a Baseball team or something.

People want to be part of a club, not a franchise.  Thats why you need a badge or a shield, not a logo.  Simple really!

Correct Hard News. The Sunday Times is about two weeks behind the times. They are referring to the "wings up" concept one. If they had been checking the YF web they would not talk such rubbish. poor journalism.

Bugger... I liked this as a t-shirt.

...but if it's the official logo we'll get what Reebok give us.

How can anyone say the Phoenix logo looks like the AEK Athens one? Their one has two heads! If I saw someone walking down the street with two heads I'd be thinking "f**k me that's a bit different, what a freak, someone should put him in a circus" not "hey, that guy looks just like everyone else". After all, if we thought having one head or two heads were the same thing we wouldn't bother splitting up Siamese twins would we?

so theres no third option now in planning its the one we already have?
