Thoughts? While I would love to see tem here I can see the point, there arent 30 thousand people who would go. Shame but ts the reality we live in.

think you would be lucky to get 20,000 tbh. If its not one of the big EPL clubs the stadium won't fill up

Rather Juv here than the waste of time and money trip to China. What lessons are going to be learned from that??

At least Juv would have taught our lot some tricks, techniques and skills.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

As much as I would love to see Juventus I think Tony P's assessment is bang on - without a "Beckham" you would get maybe 15k, 20k at best - obviously not enough to breakeven.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

True, such world class stars as Buffon, Zanetti, Nedved, Del Piero or Iaquinta would not attract the crowds.

Plenty i would think its a new squad and a trip like that could really bring them together. One game against Juventus at home wouldnt give the same benefits i think.

If you wanted to team bond on a trip, why not choose a destination where we'd learn a few things? I guess even Japan would have been a better choice considering their League or even South Korea with theirs. Otherwise a cheaper outlet may have been a trip to the US of A??

I agree with Tony P, many of those who came to ROF came to see becks and not the football. The same people would not find Juve as appealing  (or may not even have heard of them)

I also agree that a tour is a good start to the pre season, get everyone going in the same direction

LG, the reality is for the 10,000 females (my wife and daughter included) who went to see Beckham -  mention Buffon, Zanetti etc and they would think you are talking brands of shoes.

lol exactly, as much as we want this to change we live in a rugby mad country, no one will have a clue who they are, regardless of how awesome they are and how we football fans regard them. peeople won't come, simple.

and besides, how on earth would we see something awesome from someone like buffon, when there defence is light years ahead of our attack. not saying its futile because of the skill gap, but beckham has something on pitch, his crosses etc

Javier Zanetti is much better than Cristiano IMHO

I agree with LG's and others' viewpoint, as great as it would be for "purists" like us, your Joe Average punter would probably have less of a clue about these guys as we do about who is playing rugby for Wairarapa Bush.

The only way I could see it working would be if an EPL team came to town, and even then, it would be the EPL that sells tickets rather than the team or it's players.

My other point was what we could have learned by watching them train - heaps, in technique, attitude etc etc.

smart business sense in turning them down...no way in hell the RoF would've been filled (admittedly i would've been keen for juve)

are we even sure the big name juve players would've been playing?

i think the only 'big' name teams we can expect are those of the british variety (which isnt a bad thing)

maybe NZF can crack a deal with blackburn eg: Ryan wont play at the olympics if you play a friendly vs the phoenix every year

(note: would NEVER happen and i'd rather he played at the olympics)

Except they will all be in EURO 2008 camps so it would be Juventus B (Adp and Nedved a slight chance)

As stated on the other thread.  It's not about learning, it's about playing meaningful competitive matches.  If you want to watch and learn from Juve watch them on television.  If you want to build a team environment and fitness, go to an Asian neighbours and play competitive matches in a team tour and against sides that you can assess against your rivals thanks to the Asian Champions League.

On what do you base your implicit criticism of the standard of the Chinese league clubs LG? I would have thought that they would provide a good challenge.

The other factor might well be to build on the Leilei Gao factor; in terms of interest from Chinese football fans and possible future signings (i'm sure they have one or two other good players kicking a ball round somewhere in China).

China is a paid trip by the agent so it is free for the Phoenix and get us much need match practice

The New Zealand public aren't quite "educated" enough for us to sell-out a match against an under-strength Juventus team.

Simple marketing decision really.DKP222008-05-07 23:45:13

To be fair to the Phoenix, after the galaxy event, they will know exactly what it takes to make these events work. As a fan of football i would have loved to have seen Juventus in NZ. as a Fan of the nix, i would hate to see them lose money that could be spent on the squad or other events. At the end of the day, the long term viabilty is more important than 1 off events. The only way i can see this working, is if a promoter comes up with a match, and both teams are contracted to play, rather than the Nix paying for the opponenets.

As much as I have loved to see Juve at the ROF for an exhibition match, I think that Tony P and the powers that be have made a well considered decision.

While we all would jump at the chance to see a quality team up against our boys, the general NZ public wouldn't have the buy-in they did with the Galaxy match.

I think it's it's a credit to Tony P and the club that they've put the future of the club first and made a decision that, while it may be unpopular with true football fans, is in the best interests of our club.

Free! That's great, Tony.

An away bonding trip, out of sight so the Nix can settle in and maybe experiment a bit for the upcoming season, and you may find some new players along the way.

Other than we wouldn't learn any skills from Juve.

I dont understand all this learning skills from juve...what could we possibly learn from a single exhibition match, against an understrength side, that would be worth parting with (presumably) a large amount of money for?

As lonegunman says, skills and tactics.  Come on lads let use some vision.

1.4 million buys a hell of a lot of coaching compared to one match with Juve. for that money you could pay, Maradonna, Pele, and Johan Cruyff to come spend the day with the team, and they would learn a hell of a lot more.

OK I vote for UberGunners plan.  Let's pay $1.4m for Maradonna to come and teach our boys skills and tactics.

Tony P, this man should be heading up your strategy team.

What, you think that line snorting, over-eating and paranoid delusions wouldn't be good skills to have at the Nix?

You do talk some sh*t sometimes.  We all know that tricks and techniques are for posers, if the Wellington Phoenix are to be successful in their second year then it's skills and tactics they need.

You do talk a lot of sense sometimes too however.  Youre right about the children, Ive said it before on this site and Ill say it again; I believe that children are our future Teach them well and let them lead the way.  Show them all the beauty they possess inside.  Imagine the potential to teach the kids of Wellington skills and tactics at the games.

As a footy fan I must admit I'm dissapointed that another big team is not playing the Nix here at the RoF. However given the financial costs of bringing Juve here I can see the right decision has been made.
