Packed Stadium?

After the thrill of an A-league team being in Wellington, will the crowd wear off after the first 10 games or so?? Or will it come down to our performance??

I mean take Auckland for example, last season their attendence wasnt anything to be impressed by, and with poor attendence and lack of support, will we just see the old 'knights' all over again?

Yes(?). I think the novelty of having a team might wear off after a few rounds. I will like to see how many people you have for the first game against Melbourne Victory at the tin. I say 60-75% full. Good luck but your going to lose, sorry.

Auckland had around 300 supporters at the start of the season but mid-way trough the season the team went sh*te and as most people do the novelty wore off and they were eft with around 30 odd at the end of the season.

I hope your performances on and off the field are above par and finish above 7th. Good luck.

They need to preform for sure if they want decent crowds.

If we perform well in the first few games that will keep the crowds - we don't necessarily have to win them all but play attractive football and be competitive and the crowds will look after themselves.

Bingo - I mean, people sure as hell don't watch the Canes because they're reliable winners. But you just never know what's going to happen when you watch them play. That's Wellington for you.

Stadium 60-75% full would be AWESOME - better hope for that

Yeah i agree that the way the team performes ultimatly effects crowds, but it would be great to see us stick behind our team even when they are doing crap. i mean take engliand for example (not that were anywhere near soccer nutters) they support their teams till the final wistle at the end of the season. I know it would never happen but it would be great for us to keep that 70% stadium attendence.

We turned sh*te in the first season but the crowds kept rolling up, don't see why it can't be the same for you!!
Melbourne is a tough market with the 'aerial ping pong', the 'axis of evil' Herald sun, channel 9 and southern cross radio from day one they've tried the same old malarky of trying to demonize us as hooligans they went as far as channel 9 interviewing an 'alledged' victory supporter about non existant violence but we found out that he's a journo with southern cross so we 'outed' the snivelling little sh*t
If he had the balls to rock up again he could witness a real 'OFF'

i said in another forum topic and i dont mean to be a sour grape but we'll be lucky to get 5,000 people. Its footy and NZers just dont get it, plus the A-league will treat us like sh*t.....look at the warriors every game some one is banned for a bad tackle or something like that. Also the games will be on TV so most of the semi fans will just watch it at home on tv or go to a few games.

now perhaps n welly there are more footy fans and i would love to see 10,000 plus pergame but i seriously doubt that the team can pull these numbers every week.

BUT on the other hand i want to start a serious fans club and get large amounts of fans in one area of the stadium pumping the atmosphere up and making people at home wish they were at the stadium with us.

I think we can rake it AT LEAST 5k everygame. I mean this is totally new to Wellington and if the public were smart enough they take advatange of this.

I mean ive watched football all my life, grown up on it and love it, i know theyre isnt 10k of people who absolutly LOVE football but those who enjoy it should defenatly get behind us, and we can only wait and see.

Still think it'll be bigger than you think  we're heading into the 3rd season playing ALL our home games at the 'telephone box' and realistically looking at averaging 30k!!! We were asking all these questions not long ago and how happy am i???
With it being a summer game you'll get all sorts of folk coming, personally i think you'll do ok crowd wise, didn't 14k turn out there for a game???
Have a look at melbournevictory.net forums and look at what we were saying back then

'At the end of the day' i'd be 'over the moon' (horrible football cliches intended)to see you become a strong team with decent crowds it's down to you folk to get organised(as you are) and let the whole of Wellington know that you're around!!!

When do we here about season tickets. A resonable price will fill the stadium.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Well, if the Canes pull 20-25k a game on average (with the main exceptions being the sellout semi-final last year, and the 15k who turned out to see them play the Cheetahs after it seemed like the season was all but over 2 weeks ago), and we average 15k-ish for the cricket on a summer afternoon, then surely the Phoenix could get 10k.

Be good if they can keep tickets down around the $20-$30 mark even for the halfway seats - the S14 can get up to $50 for "platinum seating". Having said that, the only potential weekend I can turn up first season is Nov 24th, and they're in bloody Oz...
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I heard the tickets are going for 20-30 a pop so it shouldnt be too bad. Season tickets are coming out very soon too.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I think the Wellington sporting public will get behind this - a crowd of 10k a match would be a GREAT start. This will pick up depending on results of course - hope the Phoenix are competitive in their first season :)
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Well said Blue Dragon, there will always be some sherman tanker out there ready to have a dig at us, Don't expect the biggest noise to come from OZ either those snivelling JAFA'S will be the loudest. Just because they could'nt organise a p@ss up in a brewery will be ammo enough to have a pop at us first opportunity. GO THE PHOENIX !

As I recollect the one time that the Knights (or was it their predecessors - can't remember exactly) played in Wellington a few years back there was a crowd of about 15,000, so the fans are there - and mostly looking for an entertaining game, not necessarily a win every match (and I do remember it was a good game).

It was the Kingz and they played here more than once.  The bus trips down were f**king superb.

This is one of the more realistic posts on this thread.  We will be lucky to average 7,500 in the first season, which makes having the games at the cake tin very stupid.  With the bright yellow seats, the empty ones really stand out, so having (on average) about 25,000 of them will look terrible.

Hold the games at the Basin Reserve, and sell it out every week.

I see where your coming from Frankie Mac but with the basin reserve i think you lose atmosphere, plus i dont think Terry wants to take it to the basin when he could sell alot more tickets at the Tin.

I'm going to be well pished if they try to entertain us at the stadium with anything other than football. I do not care for trashy pop music and stadium advertising being blasted at me every ten minutes, or some stupid sound effects every time there's a goal.

We come for the football. If I wanted Music vidoes I'd stay at home and watch C4.

...and none of those stupid plastics horns... not one.

Took 12 months to stop them being sold at Knights games, let's not make the wrong start by selling them here !

AMEN to that.   The fans should be the ones dictating what get played on the P.A, or sold at the ground. After all, the fans are the only people who have to endure the stuff. It's beyond me why these people go so far out of their way to turn away their only customers.. . ..

The horns got a huge number of complaints from Australian fans for destroying the TV coverage.  We need to make sure people at the club are aware of this history so we don't make the same mistakes.

Parhaps that info should be forwarded onto the club ASAP. Is there a contact address/ number/ email yet?

There are a couple of thousand kids playing football every Saturday morning in Wellington. If you want to pack the stadium for the first few games send the Junior clubs free tickets for the kids and cut price for accompanying adults. Get them early and they'll stay for life.

LOL

As someone I worked with told his wife "There are two things in life you can't change: your kids and your football team". He wondered why she got upset.

We Ex-Pat POM'S will be there through thick & thin, we are used to supporting the underdogs.

I think in order to get the crowds theyre has to be some sort of promotion offered to all fans and audiences, i dunno maybe like a free haircut with every...maybe not.

They did that once with the Kingz when they came to play in Wellington and they had a pretty good crowd. I think that this would be a great idea in the early stages.

Well if its $20-30 for adults I'd say it would be around what they have at Sydney, $15 for student concession, which is not too bad, just like going to a movie.

But really, the only real way to get a packed stadium in the early years of a club  is to not only get results but also play good football, and market the games well (unlike Sydney) and try to get positive media coverage.

All these things need to be covered to get really brilliant crowds like Melbourne last year.
