Aw man, watching this match was AWESOME. Nothing compared to being
in the Ring of Fire, or at the Fever Lounge, but MAN was it
good.
I've been on the North Shore the last few days to support my
brother in his martial arts regional comp, and even though he
convinced me to miss out on TW beat Waitak (despite the generous
offer of Auckland Jag to help me with transport), there was NO WAY
I was missing a second of Phoenix action. My brother needed to
sleep so I couldn't watch it in our hotel, so I went walking around
Milford, up towards Glenfield, then finally to Takapuna. After
every bar said they weren't showing the match or were closing
halfway through it, I found ONE PLACE willing to play it. They
changed over immediately after the boxing and I watched the last
half of Clogs vs Cakes then....the first half of Phoenix Glory (no
vs needed!

) Turns out they
misheard me say the times or something - they closed at 1am just
like everyone else after an hour of amused patrons watching me
react to the action rather than watch the match itself! (I tried to
start "COME ON PHOENIX!" with little success....SO missed the
Fever). But they left the TV on for me to watch through the window
while they cleaned up, even going out of their way to not block my
view of the TV. So spent the second half in the cold (which I love)
surrounded by cigarette smoke (which I can hardly stand but will
for the Phoenix) causing half of Takapuna wonder "who the heck is
Daniel and why is he a bloody legend?" Absolutely stoked to see
Mossy get the clean sheet, especially as a keeper myself (albeit in
lacrosse...maybe next year in football) and especially great to see
us beat a hungry Perth that are due (I'll be cheering for them
against Newcastle this week).
Hats off to The Copper Room in Takapuna for helping a Feverite get
his fix in the big smoke. Lads, I'll be back in Wellington for the
match against the Clogs, right after Team Wellington vs YHM!
