We need a creative midfielder in the hole, not another striker like we've been doing.

re right back - Lia was being schooled up for that role prior to his injury at start of season 2 (could almost be an option)

Yeah that's what I thought.  If Lia drops to right back, this would leave space in central midfield for Toto.  If he is a genuine no 10 surely this is where he needs to play?  It may also mean we have the option of playing the ball through the middle and take some pressure of the wide players and the fullbacks.  Also please for the love of god don't play Hearfield as a fullback.

He is not a wide player, and I have been saying for a while that he should be playing right up the middle.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Pasty in doubt - still feeling his groin. Article on Jimungo - don't remember where it linked to.No North, Muscat either - good thing Musa's in my fantasy team

SC03 - you may well have travelled long-haul and gone to a meeting. I've sat for 14 hours on an overnight train, then gone straight to work from the station. However, I think you're ignoring the physical aspect of the footballer's job. There's a big difference between sitting in a meeting (or standing up front making a presentation), and chasing a ball around a park for 90 minutes.

That said, you'd think that after 3 seasons (+ all those years of Kingz and Knights) they might have figured out a solution. Then again, the Aussies apparently haven't either.

do the Breakers / Warriors / any NZ super 14 team have the same issues as the Phoenix? Might be time to start talking to these other teams to sort this out.

i'll be at this match. Perth have a couple of hard bastards - Burns & McGarry in midfield. Need to match them physically. Pellegrino is also one to watch - has a few assists to his credit this season.

But when has he played there since? I suppose it's a case of knowing what we don't want (disco @ RB), but with Manny MIA what's the alternative?

Here's something that'd shake it up. Drop Bertos to RB and give Hearfield RM!

I really don't know if I want to watch this game.  We could pull something out of the bag but I'd say it's a longshot.  I'm picking one of those games where we play uninspiring football for 90 minutes and gradually fall further and further behind and by the end you feel like you aren't far off a heart attack and when one of your friends who is a casual Phoenix fan makes a wise crack you nearly snap his neck due to your rage but can't as you know that the more fans the better and the severance of his spinal cord will probably be the severance of his support for the team.

I'll be an optimist and watch it alone with a punching bag to avoid above situation.

And yeah, Ifill just looks tubby, a number of A-League players are looking that way as well (Minniecon, I'm looking at you).

What? His best asset is that he can beat players 1on1 - hence why he plays wide. He is definitely a wide player imo. The problem is that he can't track back and defend anymore which leaves a huge gap.
?

Ricki pretty much played 4-5-1 (or 4-3-3 whatever you want to call it) all last season, then 3-4-3 for the all whites, now 4-2-3-1 (or 4-4-1-1).

Can't believe it just takes one loss for the old 'sack ricki' calls to come out. I really thought it might take a bit more than that this season, but I was sadly wrong.

Edit: Greenacre also showed last year that it is fairly pointless having him up front on his own. He will spend all game chasing shadows. He is not equipped for a target man type roll required as the lone point man.
Lol i wasn't saying sack Riki he sets his teams out well and with a clear plan i just  feel sometimes he is a little slow to react when he has to change things. And I know greenarce chased shadows last year up front on his own that was my whole idea. Pressing players in a 4-5-1 so whe don't get out played through the midfield. Mc alister is hardley going to be able to press is he so it either has to be greenarce or toto.

LG i'm a big fan of yours. BUT grow a sack*. If we're going to call ourselves fans we can't "not watch a game" because we might loose, that's poor form.

HN knew that the Knightz/Kingz were more often than not going to get dominated but he still supported and supported hard!

The losses just make the victories that bit sweeter, and is part of the roller coaster ride we get to sit on from August until Feb!!!

*that goes to all the "we're going to die" critics out there too, LG's was just the latest post I could find.

The travel has to be a factor..kiwi teams struggle across the Tasman in all codes IMHO.  I also think our home record is built on the exact same thing except it works in our favour in reverse.  What doesnt work in our favour is we have to do that travel for around 50% of our games whereas Aussie teams dont.  Having said that Perth actually do more travel so I guess given their form/results I guess they have it nailed..ask Dadi for the secret...blame it on going through immigration/customs each time.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

@ Rubberducky, sorry, should have made it clearer, the 1st part and the P.S. was at you, the 'sack ricki' part was more a general comment at the tone of the thread (and some specific posters as well)

I realize all that, it's just I can see a Knights-esque performance on the horizon.  But I was never realistically going to not watch the game, so don't worry about any abscence of a sack.

And he has already scored twice in three weeks this season.

It doesn't matter how it affects you. It is what it is, and dwelling on it doesn't make the problem go away. Good to see ricki on the TV3 interview saying he doesn't want to hear about it.

You said before that he could not get back. Enough said.
As for the fact he prefers to play wide-- who is the coach?

Fair enough point - I think that teams do target us down that side and often it works. Probably one of the reasons why he always switches with Leo.

He is a great player and the fact that he is 31 is not a problem for me.To be the wide player you need to be super fit, and I doubt that he is.
