Financial squeeze goes on Hurricanes
The Hurricanes are feeling the pinch with season tickets plummeting and match-day attendances going down.
Saving their money for Phoenix season tickets perhaps?

2nd year is always harder to attract crowds, especially if results don't go the right way. When we start our winning streak though and march into the semis we may just see the first full ring of fire...

i chose 12,001 to 15,000 but would like to see more,i guess if we win the first couple of games in the new season crowd numbers will grow.

Rugby losing fans. I've lived long for that day. Having copped a lot of crap for following  "That poofters sport" for so many years. More kids are playing football than ever, and now fans have the Nix and numbers are increasing there in attendence. Karma, that's what it is, karma!!

sure thing, IF the Phoenix keep the price structure pretty much the same as last season, can only see increased gates -

This year we will not have the novelty factor...so results on the field will be important.

You can't help get the feeling that football in this part of the world is on the rise. The A-League keeps getting better and the Phoenix has been an tremendos hit in Wellington. now we hear that people are drifting away from rugby....hell-a-loo-ya the promised land is near!!!!!

Actually I'm not surprised about the rugby....I've met heaps of people who are giving the rugby a miss but are now big Phoenix supporters!!!!

i think early on we will still have an increase in numbers - but results will be important for the rest of the season.

I work with a bloke who calls our beloved sport gayball, he reckons that anyone who thinks "gayball" will ever take over from rugby is dreaming.Lets hope he ends up having nightmares.

Went to my first Hurricanes match since the rise of the Phoenix - it's just not the same any more. I still love the sport of rugby, as well as the Hurricanes, but the match day experience is NOTHING compared for Yellow Fever! I can hardly wait until next season, especially to see how much better it becomes when we get the on-field results matching our off-field success.

Match day attendances going down? They have had one home game... They can say that after this weeks home game if the attendance is lower.

I too attended the hurricanes last game (posted my thoughts on another thread somewhere)

But, the interesting thing is, people at work talk to me about football / phoenix and the next season. no one is talking rugby.

Hurricanes spokesman on radio this morning saying (along the lines) - "we pre-sold 20,000 tickets for the game last week, but only 17,500 turned up. Plus the counters on the turnstiles broke, so 17,500 may have been a little on the high side"

Remembering, last Friday was balmy and calm...

having said that, I still (mostly) enjoy the rugby - but the atmosphere - or lack thereof - is dire

There were many more at last Fridays hurricanes game (than against the reds) - but official numbers were less than 17,000....

Cheers karori.  The glimpses I caught of Friday night made me think it looked a lot larger.  If it is confirmed as 17k you have to think last week was well under 12...

As much as i really dont enjoy rugby  i will watch it sometimes for the same reason we want people to attend our games. Its Wellington people and for that reason yep i do support the Hurricanes and the Lions.Sorry but but it does seem as if some of you have the small cock syndrome when it come to rugby.Who really cares  what crowds they are getting as some of those there will still turn up to the Phoenix next season. But dont kid yourselves if the results dont start to happen then we will be left with us football tragics.

I usually go to Hurricanes games but was disappointed with last seasons attendences. This year is pretty much the same. As you said Ballane - It's Wellington after all. But after the Fever, at rugby there is no atmosphere, it either that stupidly loud music or Hurricanes/ black, black, black chant. Annoys the sh*t out of me and the crowds just are not into it. Being a staunch hard rugby fan, you're not allowed to clap, cheer and sing - that's sissy stuff, pass me another dozen beers to drink on a cold wet rainy winters night mentality. Who the f**k drionks ice cold beer on an ice cold nice in the rain? You spend half the calm in the toilets having a piss.

The Chiefs match was pretty good, one of the few rugby matches where there's been atmosphere. Nothing compared to anything the Phoenix have produced, even in the pre-season, but still better than most NPC matches. Plus the atmosphere was conflicted - with Chiefs fans everyone, there was noticeable applause for their success as well as ours, all over the stadium. The Hurricanes could learn a lot from Phoenix seating arrangements.

Also, yesterdays lines were nuts, my friends gave up and left (I used my season pass). I don't know if it's mostly a cultural problem of not buying tickets (especially with $6 booking fees) or inadequate ticket booths, but something really needs to be sorted. That match could have easily beaten 20K if people could just get into the stadium at their first place.

I love how this is supposed to be a thread on Phoenix crowd numbers next season, and 90% of the people are talking about the Hurricanes crowd numbers...

I don't think the Phoenix have too much effect on Hurricanes crowd numbers, crowds are decreasing over the whole country. I think about the same as last year but it all depend on the Phoenix's form.

I just want to see 20K plus every Phoenix game. As I see it, a lot of people who went to the odd game this year claim to have converted to supporters who will definitely buy season tickets for next season. We'll see how many stay true to that.

It comes down to whether we are winning games or not. Everyone loves a winner of course, and we've seen that in action this last season. Fingers crossed.

I'm confirmed for a season ticket, last year I paid 28 for the 9 league games and 80 for the Beckham. It might sound expensive but I have to rate it as money well spent. I had a lot of fun and met some same good people as a result.

Il definetley renew my season ticket
I think the numbers will vary greatly depending on results. If we are doing well 15000 and up im predicting but if it we lose a few games expect 8000-10000chocnut2008-03-02 22:54:14

It all depends where the games are played.....

I'm really surprised at the delight some are having at the decline of club rugby in this country.  I'm not too sure why one can't be a fan of both?  I enjoy watching the Super 14's, I won't pay to go to the games but that doesn't mean I take pleasure in seeing the team/club/franchise fail.

Reading the thread some people have even posted about how long they've waited for the day rugby struggles and then told us how they supported the Hurricanes in previous seasons.  I wonder if their support for the Phoenix will be so fickle?

Some people are remarkably up themselves after one season of unremarkable football.

Lets try and keep our feet on the ground and not piss too many people off guys.....

Waiting for a football team to come along has been a long time. During suh times, getting crap tossed at us about that "poofters sport" at any opportunity. I guess you have to live in an ardent Rugby area to fully appreciate it. I'm happy to watch the Canes and the Lions but it doesn't give me the same pleasure as going to a Nix game and not have that overloud music at every stoppage. New Zealand's long held culture of Rugby, Racing & Beer now has competition, well at least in the Wellington catchment.

i was at friday nights canes game and would have picked that there were 20thou min. like robb i thought it was quite a good atmosphere mainly because the canes played well, being a chiefs fan i was coping it. but i just dont think its comparable to a nix game. i go to each for different experiences and while nowadays i enjoy a nix game more i still really enjoyed watching my team take a pasting on friday.
neway on topic crowds for the first game will be 15000, win and the next crowd is the same, lose and itll be down to 10. if we dont win a good number of our first few games i think well slip below the 10 mark. what somebody said before was very true, there is no novelty really this season so it will be down to results.

loyalty, results and performance and  would seem to be the factors

a hardcore will be there regrdless of losses, earthquakes, hangovers, divorces (threatened or actual)

good results will obviously raise numbers

but good performances will also retain numbers - quality attacking football is worth watching even if we drop points from time to time (whether by reffing decisions, brilliance from the opposition or even our occasional defensive lapses)

regarding worries of 2nd season lack of novelty -  i believe that new signings and the fact that gates stayed 'high' even at the end of the season indicates that first-time fans will still be found in the new season

we should also have better overall media coverage during pre-season than last time round, which should help with early season gates

Got to keep the media coverage and match advertising up though, because a fickle sporting public forget very quickly when the next home game is.

those bus shelter ads were brilliant last season, it was always good to leave a home match and see a new ad for the next match on the way back to the car
