I really do hope WE have a minutes silence for him.
Winning against Perth would be in his memory.

A minutes silence followed by a minutes chanting when the teams break off while his photo is up on the big screen would be an appropriate send off imo.
My condolences to his friends and family, work colleagues, mates. As I post this they are preparing to go to his funeral at 2:00. A tragic, tragic accident. RIP Michael.

Often now, a minutes applause is had to celebrate a life, a hair raising tribute. Could it, or a minute's silence be arranged for Friday night?
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

Folks,

As an update, nightz is in the Hawkes Bay this week and called in on the family with some flowers and offered condolences and support from those with the Fever.

Michael's father said he'd been a dyed in the wool Rugby supporter all his life but attended an early Phoenix match and became completely devoted and had not missed a match since.

From the club:

BLACK ARMBANDS IN MEMORY OF FAN

Wellington

WELLINGTON Phoenix players will wear black armbands during tomorrow nights match against Perth Glory in memory of a fan who died on his way home from watching the Phoenix-LA Galaxy football match.

Michael Webby, 29, slipped on a greasy path and fell 20m down a steep bank early Sunday morning as he made his way home to his Kelburn flat after watching the game at Westpac Stadium.

Wellington Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said the death of Mr Webby was a terrible tragedy.

Our deepest condolences and sincerest sympathies go to Michaels family and loved ones. It is only a small gesture but everyone here at the club wanted to wear black armbands on Friday night to pay tribute to Michael.

would it be better to have a minutes applause to celebrate his life ??
a minutes silence may be hard to get as you always have yobbos who like to ruin it
plus we'd be celebrating his life rather than reflecting on his passing  ?

What a great tribute!

Well done Phoenix and supporters!

RIP Michael

would it be appropriate to do the minute of silence at the beggining of the game, just have the whole crowd quiet! No need to have it announced just do it - we all know what its for.

Very sad. Condolensces go to his family, girlfriend, and friends.

It makes you realise how insignificant football is in the grand scheme of things and it shows us how short life is.

Good on you Nightz for sending his family flowers, and good on you Tony Pignata and the Phoenix for organising the team to wear black armbands.

Please Read:

"Many YF members have expressed condolensces to Michael Webby's family on the forum and Nightz deserves a special thanks for dropping the flowers off with his family in Napier on our behalf. The team will also be wearing black arm bands tomorrow and that's great.

A number of people have suggested YF might do something as a group on Friday night as a tribute to Michael. This is something we have thought about but, on balance, and without knowing Michael's family and how they are dealing with their loss, we feel we want to leave it up to individuals to decide whether they want to pay a tribute of some kind tomorrow."

Totally agree and people shouldn't be pressured into anything.
I personally will do the black armband though, maybe we could set up somewhere tomorrow night at the BB with a few rolls of tape so people can do that even if others dont.

Bugger, I've only just got net access and read about this. Not two hours ago I returned from Napier, If I had known I wold have shown up - i have all my Nx gear in my car too. gggrrrrrrrr for not knowing.

My sincerest condolances to everyone concerned with this fellow fan. A minutes silence before the game on Friday night?? Would be good if we did it in the middle of a song just so that the silence really stood out.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

what a horrible thing to happen.

just want to say that i agree with the armbands (in YF and for Phoenix) and a few banners but I thought (no offense to anyone) that a minutes silence was only for people involved with the team or other teams ie player x's mother dies or a past coach etc.

Either way im sure that YF will show NZ how passionate and carring Football fans can be.

My wife works with friends of Michael and it was a shocking thing to happen. There's a bit of annoyance at the newspaper for claiming he died in his girlfriend's arms - completely untrue according to the friends who say she knew as soon as she saw him.

A minute's silence would be fitting - it's never been reserved just for people directly involved with clubs as claimed above. Michael was a Phoenix fan and tragedy struck after a Phoenix game. Involvement enough IMHO.

Seems like the right thing to do, but will respectfully abate should it be the familys' wish.

Michael Webby was a very dear friend of mine. I attended the funeral in Napier yesterday and had a brief moment to offer my condolences to his partner whom I met whilst living in London over 4 years ago.

The first thing she said to me was (and she had a smile on her face when she said it!) was that some of the YF had visited the Webby family house that morning and pasted on their condolences!

I look forward to honouring Michael with a fitting minute silence at tonights match.

Having known him well he would love nothing more than to see the YF Zone to raise their scarves above their heads as a mark of respect to a fellow football fan and YF member.

Been mulling this over and I say let's not have a minute's silence. If it was me I 'd want you all to give me a minute's noise/applause. I know it's not me but I hope you get my drift. Let's remember this man's life. Life isn't quiet. It's noisy and it's raucous!!

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

whatever the decision lets make it a definitive decision - we want to make a clear mark of respect, not a muddled statement of individuals.

I think that supporters are just as important as players and coaches. We're all people mate!

By the way, huge applause to the guys who went and offered their condolences Also to Tony P for organising the black armbands etc - we've got the best CEO in the league!

I wont make it to the game tonight but the poor chap and his family are in my thoughts n' prayers. Its a sad time in the world of sport with fans passing away (nix) and supporters involved in various fracas (italy), not to mention Sean Taylor (NFL player), gunned down in his home late in Nov.

Im not one for black armbands personally but thats just me. in the NFL every player in every team wore a 21 sticker on their helment to honour the passing of Sean Taylor - i wish we could honour MW in the same way somehow.

Lets make sure Michael Webby is remembered and honoured in a special way that his family can cherish and talk about with fondness for years to come.

RIP MW.
