Lochheads name is the only odd one out in that list. A decent left back when played there or as lwb.

Better central defenders will help Lochhead's game. Agree, a decent left sided player who will be staying, I hope

Radio Sports Mike Steere talks with Wellington Phoenix boss Tony Pignata about the release of three players and two new signings set to be announced for the 2008 A-League season.

After thinking about it I'm pretty happy with all 3 decisions.

Elrich was rubbish apart from his superb goal. He'd been talking about joining his brother at the aeroplanes so I'll look forward to Bertos running rings around him next season and a few "you ate all the pies" and "2 men went to lift, went to lift Ahmed Elrich, 3 men..." chants next season

Felipe really impressed me in some games, but in others went missing, and if he wanted to much cash, we'll the gaffer does have a salary cap to fit under...

Ree's was an excellent stop gap signing, but lets face it he's not going to get any faster. Still he made a great contribution to the Phoenix and I'll give him a clap if he turns out for another team against us.

that Elrich chant is a must, hope I'm around when it happens

Also, Aloisi, is he a definite goner?

WTF, let Lochhead go?

That would be plain stupid.

Also we need Dodd, hes extremely solid, just need another decent centre back along side him.

Yeah, I kind of just chucked Lochhead in there for a bit of controversy... But. I don't know. I haven't been watching him a lot in the season to be honest so couldn't really judge. The rest however... Different story.

Old, Christie and Johnson are all good candidates for the chop. But i agree with WB4E we need to keep Lochhead and Dodd.

Oh, and we all know who that decent centre-back along side him is....

Three for me, and two for them.

You won't miss him.  Neither will Ricki from what I've heard.

Yeah I wouldn't let Johnson go if he's still fit and wanting to play. He's a good player.

That doesnt surprise me. Rees was pretty solid in his time here, and would make a good back up for any other side. He was great value for the club, farewell.

Felipe, I'm dissapointed that I wont see some of his magic this coming season. But he wasnt so present for the last third of the season, when he came back from injury. I doubt he would want to go to another A League side, he got roughed up too much here and will probably try his luck in a league that isnt so physical. (Same for Juninho). All the best

Elrich, promised so much as a signing, delivered once, cant say goodbye as he has been absent for some time

Saw a comment on this site yesterday - can't remember where - but from someone in the back room suggesting the Brazillian recruiting trip was a waste of time.

Anyone know details?

I was driving through Melbourne the day after the 1-1 draw with my bro and and Missus, we saw Lochhead and Felipe and gave them a ride. Felipe was saying that he was keen as to stay at the nix!! Conspiracy anyone!! My missus was drooling over Felipe anyways. I reckon both Elrichs are over rated.

The last time I saw this much sh*t I was walking through a paddock on a Gisborne Cattle Farm!!!

My God People! You're all sounding like we've just finished bottom of the ladder for the past 25 Seasons! It's gonna take time but we will get there!

Townsville and Gold Coast will be getting most of the scraps like we kind of did last season. Although sometimes scraps are pretty useful, Dodd, Ferrante etc

Ferrante, only really looked like he belonged in the team on a couple of occasions.  He defiantly needs to step it up if he wants to play in this coming season and finish his chances!

I'll miss Felipe, the team never really benefitted from his skills but it sure was good to watch when he was taking the piss out of his defenders

ferrante is a player u need at the club as he has the greatest passing ability that ive seen at this level(altho other areas of his game are lacking). Felipe got worse as the season progressed. I cannot believe plodder and old r still at the club.
We look to have a good backline now! Mckain, Durante,Dodd and Lochhead!!!
Just need a marquee midfielder or attacker.
The signings were great!

Old and Plodder will be here this season as they both still have one year left in their contract.
I would'nt expect them to get much game time considering the recent signings....especially Old.

I'd like to see Christie used off the bench more.

He's an adaptable player; a useful quality when you only get 3 outfield players on the bench.

One disappointing aspect of Felipe leaving is that Daniel sometimes seems to play better when he is on the park too (and vice versa).

Funny, if I was told at the start of last season only one Brazilian would reman at the end, Daniel isn't the one I would've chosen - what with his lack of English at the time.

But full credit to him, he's really put the effort in and has been a great ambassador for the club.

Damn, no more of those cute little Daniel/Felipe passing exchanges where it seemed like they were playing the game in a world of their own. I'll miss those. I don't feel so antagonistic towards Elrich as some; in fact I kind of feel sorry for him. I reckon he bluffed his way through the season  knowing full well that his injury has seriously damaged his game. For the sake of his career I hope he can regain some of his old form at another club.

err...sorry replying to this...

Now that we have a midfeild thats either old or not really up to it in the middle, perhaps the club have signed Michael Ballack? we certainly need a 24-28 year old midfeild general as in DM and one that plays as an AM so two quality midfeilders as well as two or now three defenders and two more strikers.

That's my opinion but I have known to be wrong.

possibly - Tim Brown, with a good pre-season behind him

I would love to see Tim Brown kick in...didn't he lay on the second goal for Smeltz against Wales?
heres hoping...

Quoting...
Yeh thanks for the thrills Felipe. All the best!
Thanks Reesy for the hard tackles, hope you get another run in the A League.
Thanks too Ahmad for the good bits. I kinda don't want you to do too well for anyone else, cos you could make it tough for us if you get back into form!

Well said! kind on Ahmed but everyone else has bagged him to obliteration so...yeh he strikes me as the kind of guy that might use it as motivation in future games...

"Wouldn't" may be closer to it chocnut.  In Daniel we have an attacking midfielder, but we needed to cough up our spend on defenders, guess we made the call.

That's a good score for Galaxy. Felipe's going to like the tropical lifestyle up there. It's not exactly Rio but it's Oz's next best, or worst, thing. Wonder how early in the piece they started sounding him out?

I hope we don't lose all our attacking nous by spending everything on defenders.
I loved the attacking philosophy the Nix had for (most of) last season.
Granted, the defence needs improving.

Presumably a marquee will be the last player to be confirmed ...

And is Sigmund going to be confirmed too, or does that wait for the end of NZFC season?

What the hell at people saying Ferrante and johnson should be realised...theyre possibly
2 of our better and most consistent midfielders...ferrantes passing game is great viewing!

Christie is ideal in a league with caps on salary and squad size as he can play (averagely well) in many positions...plus hes a kiwi

Allegedly

I heard a rumour last night that "the Nix are dicking Sigmund around" and he might not be signing for us. Unsubstantiated rumour obviously, but interesting none the less!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

A marquee strker thanks, and an attacking mid to replace Felipe
Permalink Permalink

Signing Sigmund might not be a goer. With Durante, McKain and Dodd we now have three good central defenders. Plus they can't dump Old as he still has a year on contract. They are still looking for a Right back so suddenly there are lots of options in defense. I can't see where Sigmund fits!!

Loosing Felipe is a bit of a blow. Ideally we need another playmaker with flair in the mid field. It puts a lot of pressure on Daniel to create play and its too easy for defenses to shut one guy down. Bertos and Ferante are solid players but you sometimes need someone with that extra spark to unlock a defense in a tight game.

haahaah you're quality mate!
I couldn't agree more. I think Elrich was a decent signing, but I also think our marquee player should be someone BIG. Someone who makes the difference, someone who gets us (together with the formidable team we already have) to the play-offs. Someone who deserves that kind of money.
