Phoenix media Shunning.

I am a New Zealander living in Australia..and I always Support any New Zealand team...I just hate seeing Australia win anything..Anywayz..

For the Last few days I ave been waiting for the news to show atleast something about Wellingtons first signings but to my dismay there was not even a single word about it at first I thought it was just because other football codes took priority but today one of the first stories on the sports news was about Aurielio Vidmar being signed as the Coach of Adelaide..

I know that they would cover the news about Adelaide being an Australian team but it just gets me abit angry that nothing was said about the Phoenix and even Fox Sports News who batter us every minute of the day with their slogan " We bring you sports news from all over the world 24/7 as it happens. " and they couldn't even be bother to cover the singings and anything else to do with the Phoenix who play in the A-league, which Fox has all the coverage rights too.

that must be really frustrating for you

maybe yellow fever needs to open an australian broadcasting company too.  that way we could also remind australians that neil finn, timm finn and liam finn are new zealanders...

Thats a bit rough, but if you read some of the other posts you'll find out we have a hard time getting quality stories about football at all here, although i thought TV3 did a good job of covering the player signings the other night. Best bet would be to keep looking at the a-league website for more signings or here for well opinionated chat, we all always have something to say

There was a story about Aloisi and Ferrante signing in The Age sports section yesterday. Suppose it was only because of the ex-MV player angle but better than nothing.

I watched ESPN's SportsCenter (AUS/NZ Edition), which is based out of Aust, and they featured all the signings...

I just keep checking this site if I need to know anything about the Pheonix. I have gotten sick of Sports tonight and Fox Sports news.

The Australian had a very small write up on Tuesday. The West Australian also had  the same today.

Mate, welcome to the world of NZ media coverage - Have a read of Marius Lackatush's posts for some idea as to what we football fans have had to endure these last, oh, 4 million years.

If it isn't an even bigger poke in the eye with a stick, while we sit glued to the internet to find anything out about our beloved Phoenix, some dick head of an All Black stubs his toe and it warrants a 25 minute expose by the national new carriers as to the dangers of unwrapping our rugby players from their cotton wool too early before a world cup...

To add to this insult the additonal bias against anything football related flows through to sponsorship, youth development, coaching development and practically anything of consequnce to our sport...

(barrage of spite over) apologies...

At least with the Phoenix being in town, we'll HAVE to get some coverage! Surely! Am I wrong?

well i heard people talking about it the phoenix in  the supermarket so even with the crap coverage people are talking bout it, i guess thats a good thing

Total Football covered about 2 mintues on the Phoenix with the owner Terry being interviewed.
NZ Footballs best friend Robbie Slater had to have the last word about how unhappy he is with the PHOENIX playing in their A-League.
Correct me if i'm wrong, wasn't Slater born in England!!!
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Yeah he was...And I saw the Total Football the thing they had on the Phoenix was only a few minutes. and Robbie slater...Well the only thing I can say about him is...I would like to find him alone in a dark alley so I can show him just how displeased I am about his comments about NZ football.

He would rather have had the North Queensland team...and he was not shy about saying so.

Considering they pulled out because they couldn't get it done in time, his choice was the Phoenix or a 7 team league.

Of course, Slater (like Foster) nevers lets the facts get in the way of his opinion.

It seems as though those f*%kers at TVNZ are at it again or did I blink when they mentioned about Costas signing .I hope that they will not be at the games or they will get a mouthful from me thats for sure .

I think this season for the Phoenix will the decide the amount of media coverage in the future...If the bloody Big Cats at the Tv stations see the amount of support that the Phoenix gets then they will be very quick to join the band wagon..It's a shame that things are like that but they are running a business after all and everythings about the money.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
It's not just the money.

There is also an entrenched cynicism toward local football within our media. Most newsrooms and plenty of sports reporters are instinctively looking to ignore or take the p!ss out of NZ football.

If my psycho-analysis serves me correctly, it comes down to some rugby-centric insecurity about the threat of the "beautiful game" to our national pastime (in addition to that, NZ football does kick itself in the nads just often enough).

Remember, NZ is about the only country in the world in which it's "soccer" players who are the pansies.

Be warned, Yellow Fever (NZ's most passionate football advocates) shall grant no mercy to those who ridicule the great game without just cause.

Bear in mind that the twats that report on R*gby have a vested interest in keeping it as our main sport. The Likes of  Grant Nisbitch, John Lady McBeth, Keith Quim and Muddy Sneaker all stand to lose their livelihoods if F*ckby were to lose its popularity here. They are all sh*tscared of the beautiful game, mark my word.
It says a lot about the mentality of our nation when the only sports we are good at are the sports no-one else takes seriously. I mean, Brendon Teflon and his netball expertise? Give me a break. 1) It's a sport that the women of two countries play, and 2) the guy's not good enough to get a job commentating on Thugby in Thugby country. Very, very sad indictment of his talents, I say.

I think you will find most newspapers in NZ have a thugger-head running the department. I know my local rag the Waikato Times has one in Even Pegden and his articles on rugger swamp the sports news. That's one reason why I don't buy the paper. The football coverage is pretty poor and when I do supply a photo of a local game FOC they sometimes don't even have the courtesy to credit me with the pic (last Monday for example). The missus gets the paper at her work and she brings it home every night so I get to read the rugger news for free. We should run a list of all the journalists in the country that give football a bad name. I'll nominate Joseph Romanos for a start.

Hmm, Brendon Telfer...you got to question the guys motives for swanning around the netball scene for so long. Can't he pick up any pussy elsewhere?

You have given me an idea Nesting, when the PHOENIX play in Perth I might do a banner saying Slater loves the PHOENIX.

Right, Fever need a full page regular article in Soccer Talk. Just got their latest, and no mention of YF. I think they are jealous that we have more of a following..

Email Glen Price g-price@xtra.co.nz with whatever you have to offer Soccer Talk. He relies on people to send him information, and generally he will use anything provided and give appropriate credit. Phoenix will get a regular few pages of coverage as did the Knights in each issue, but you are more likely to see more readable stuff in ST once they are up and running. They haven't even got a full squad together yet so I'm sure the coverage of the team will build up rather well leading into the new A-League season. You'll have to approach Glen regarding a supporters page. Remember you have a website and you don't want to replicate what is on the website in our one and only NZ monthly magazine. No point in people reading it all here for free and then being expected to pay $6.20 to get the same news. I'm not the editor on the magazine, just a contributing photographer but if someone can come up with a good idea then by all means get your ideas off to Glen. Something like a supporters profile might be good for starters. See if you can get some pix of some of the more interesting supporters of the Phoenix and some stories on what they love about the game and what they expect from their new A-League team.
The last I knew, Glen was only doing ST as a secondary job so I wouldn't expect too much too soon. The email address is above so get your heads together and come up with some interesting reading material.
Cheers Grant

Thanks you SBS and the world game for doing some decent coverage on the Phoenix today....Today on SBS, The World Game spent 10 or more minutes speaking about the Phoenix and also doing an interview with Ross Aloisi...Ross I think accidentally said blurted out that he knew who the entire Phoenix squad was going to be or who they wanted it to be and when Andrew pressed him on the issue he tried to laugh it off and said that The Phoenix did not want anyone to know who they were going to be yet..It is all very exciting.

I had the misfortune to tune in on Saturday as Deaker was talking to Billy Harris. Now I like Billy, but didn't Deaker twist his words around. Talk about knocking machine. The guy is a walking mallet.
He was bleating on about the fact that the players that they had signed (at that time eight) were not going to win the championship and "was it going to be a DISASTER, like the Kingz and the Knights."
Then he started raving on about the fact that the club didn't have a CEO, so how were they going to make any decent signings without a CEO.
A couple of talkback callers later, he started on about SOCCER people, how they are always stabbing each other in the back, blood all over the place he said. That's what's wrong with the soccer in this country, they can't stop stabbing each other in the back, he bellowed.

Not that it occured to this lame-brain loudmouth that none of those SOCCER people had anything to do with the Phoenix.

No it's not Soccer people stabbing each other in the back that's wrong with the sport in this country, it's all the Rugbyheads in positions of authority, who only take a negative slant on football and take every opportunity to run it down when they can.

I still remember Deaker's classic with the Kingz.  Whined and whined that the side in Season 3 was all imports, no heart, we needed kiwi players.

Then when Fallon stepped in started whining that NZ players weren't up to it and we needed imports..  He switches sides quicker than Phil Gifford... I assume he's a chiefs fan now ?

He's a dead set shocker, but the worst part is he is just typical of the rugbyhead bashing machine. And he's so influential.

The tele is just full of anti-football types, from Mirams at TV One to Dobson at TV3 (who have the biggest rugby cheerleader on the planet, that McKay goober).

Funnily enough there are a few real football fans in high places in the print media. The Sunday News editor and the assistant sports editor at the Sunday Times are both hardcore Gooners, and there are Potters tragics in high places in both those papers. Matho is a Spurs fan, while there are plenty of other football fans in other papers, the Dom being a case in point and one of the best thing about having the Phoenix in Welly is that it will at least get a sympathetic press - unlike the Granny which was a dead loss.

But telly is going to be really hard to crack, particularly since the A League is on SKy and both TV# and TVNZ hate their satellite cousin with a Middle East styled passion.

I'm not a fan of John Matheson. The stuff he writes in the Sunday News is often half-fiction, or else he's just having a larf (Allan Ball for the Knights comes to mind). I mean last week he said "The coach (Herbert) faces the prospect of trying to stop a Welsh team which will include Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy and Manchester United wizard Ryan Giggs" which whilst sounds good to the non-footballing public (who wouldn't know any better), is a just name-dropping exercise. They are in the squad but with a  European Championship clash with the Czech Republic the Saturday following the friendly with New Zealand, the Welsh are more likely to run with Norwich City's Robbie Earnshaw (19 goals in the championship) and Sarfend Unarteds' Freddy Eastwood up front against us than risk Bellers and Giggs getting crocked in a friendly.
Jim Kaye always used to write some great stuff but I haven't read the Truth for a while now.

This is probably the most intelligent discussion on this forum!!  I guess what we as fans have to do is try and contribute in a positive way so that the media's only option is to report in a positive way.  The warriors were the media whipping boy 1999/2000 but come 2002 they were the first story on sunday sports news.  Sure success had a lot to do with it.  But fans turned up in their droves and made it impossible to ignore.  Attendances and performances are the two things that people love to knock football about.  We can't do anything about performances but attendances are where we can play our part.  Ring into Radio Sport if people are talking rubbish about football (Willie Lose and Deaker springs to mind readily), turn up to the games rather than watch it on TV and remind people that there are hundreds of thousands of kiwi football fans.  And show Billy Harris and the Auckland football media up for the negative, whinging tragics they are.

PS:  Kevin Sinnott at TV 3 is a good friend of the Fever.

Bellamy will be in the Liverpool squad for the champions league final. He probably wrote that article before the semi was decided?
