It seems dumb that there is now a bye in the league. Why not let Nelson or Manawatu back in??

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Because a bye is infinitely better than an unsustainable franchise, presumably.

Hmm, NZF have no problem with Wanderers who are completely uncompetitive

Unsustainable and uncompetitive are different things though. Wanderers are perfectly sustainable because NZF pays for it.

Unsustainable doesn't equal uncompetitive though. The Wanderers should be better this year and are hugely sustainable given they are run by NZF.

Ha, NZF?  The other franchises and FIFA via the club world cup pay for it.  I doubt it costs NZF a cent net net

Apologies, I just assumed NZF pay for it. My original point still stands though, unsustainable and uncompetitive aren't the same thing.

Yeah, but Youngheart were axed for being uncompetitive, I'm pretty sure they would have been able to keep going if they'd been left in the league.  Reality is that these franchises are much smaller than the clubs that played in the old national league.  Fundraising is the biggest issue, beyond that there is less to worry about running a mens and youth side compared to running a big club with both seniors and juniors.

Wanderers may not have won at all last year, but based on what people saw they were competative.

Also, they are all a year older now which I imagine will make a big difference. I expect them to beat teams like Waikato this year.

What I am more interested in is, what are the names of young players out there we want to see get a run with the Nix reserves side. I'm hoping for one or two 14 - 15 year olds to get a crack... only because I'm always hopeful the next Rufer / Rojas / Wood are out there waiting to get a chance.

Waikato Ball to move down perhaps as an example of a young player who might get a look in now.

He's 17, but point remains the same.

Check out (google) this guy: Dylan Bull. Banging them in for Sacred Heart under Danny Hay. 15 goals in 13 games. Could be the next Tim Payne.

17 in 14. Won them the ASS Prem.

Dylan bull turns 17 this year. Next crop of stand-out 15-16 year olds most likely found at nix academy, ole/wests, WYNRS.

Alternate ground required for athletics days over summer. Some Newtown park expert can cross reference.

Is the Phoenix ASB team a Franchise or will it be and Australian team allowed to ply in NZ. IE Transfers will be International into the team or will they go through the system as Tranfers to ASB as current franchises do. Only small print.

So four pro players allowed, I'm guessing with no stand down.

Is that per game or for the entire season?

JBS and Rufer seem the two most obvious.

Per game

I thought this proposed rule wasn't going to happen. Pretty shit. I wonder exactly why it's in place

4 is better than none I suppose. You could rotate it so fringe players get a game at least every couple of weeks.

Is 4 players similar to what A league clubs are allowed in NYL?

At the moment we will have 16 in the match day squad from a wider squad of 22. We only have six reserves anyway. When you factor in injuries most fit players will get a game every week.

Italiano is our back up keeper. He'll never play unless the Phoenix have a week off. Hicks, JBS, Lia, Ridenton, Rufer and Caira are your most likely six who won't be in the match day squad.

Italiano would play if Nix gameday non-clash allowed

Yeah, pretty sure the NYL has a limit of 4 over age players in the match day squad.

Heard Oliver Sail from Central going to Phoenix so he'll likely be regular keeper?

No news on us being able to sign 3 extra players?

Interesting in the story about TW that they said that the nix are signed just for one season. I guess that coincides with the nix losing their A-League license.

When does that get renewed?

Oliver Sail would be a good pick for the Phoenix in terms of young and promising. Has looked good for Central.

It make sense that players like Rufer, Ridenton and JBS can go down to the ASB Premiership.

Would we even want to sign 3 extra players? We are better off just signing players to the reserve team and bringing them in as injury replacements if we need to. There is no point having a squad of 26 and only have 4 of 10 players outside the top team playing reserve football.
