Well, the video evidence is clear as mud, I don't know what Petone think they can do with that. The only thing you can hear is some spectator calling for "number 6" to be sent off, so I suppose that's the guilty party.
I assumed by reading the Stuff article that there would have been an all-in brawl, but the "ruckus" seems to have been restricted to some hot words and a bit of shirt-fronting. Very interesting that the game was stopped for 7 (not 10) minutes and the ref didn't hand out any cards. The Stuff article says "the player who was subjected to the abuse was substituted shortly after the incident", so that'll be Samuel Wall (sp?)
Needless to say, I'm not doubting at all that someone in the WeeNix trotted out the homophobic abuse and that can't be tolerated.
So in no way am I accusing anyone of being the person who apparently said something with this post but this is a summary of the names and numbers.
Number 6 for the Nix is Fin Conchie. It was him having words first with Petone 10 (Sam Pickering) and then it was Petone 8 (Amir Mandalawi) that got fired up. Nix number 5 (Isaac Hughes) then came over and shoved the Petone player. When they kind of separated and Petone was coming together as a group, Nix 12 (Kaelin Nguyen) decided to go to them and say something, getting him a shove for his efforts before the Ref pulls him away.
As this happened about the 71st minute, the sub who came off before play restarted was Petone 20 (Samuel Wall) in the 73rd minute. Petone did make another double substitution in the 82nd minute that saw Petone 8 come off then (along with Petone 24 - Jack O'Connor)

Well handled I think by the Phoenix. Being upfront about it and putting responsibility on the player, but also continuing to support him. It's good that they are ensuring there will be a way back for him and that this doesn't have to be career-ending but ultimately he has got to serve his suspension without fuss as we're trying to stamp this out from the game.

As an aside, a friend of mine (not a 'Nix regular) recently found out that fans are shouting 'sea gull' and pointing at a bird/plane and not 'sieg heil' while doing the salute.

Could not agree more. They could have improved a little more though by saying that a communication had also gone to the Petone club and to CF on Finn's behalf.
There is cliche that applies here. In any facet of life, you can survive this sort of publicity once, but not twice. So, I hope that whatever punishment comes his way, he (and only he) makes sure it never happens again.
It says something to is character though that he made a full admission to the club. It would have been very easy to have used "the ref didnt hear it, so nothing was said" model. I doubt without a confession, CF could have done anything either. They have to rely on the ref's report.

You have to do a media release. In this age of camera phones everywhere, the footage and news is a bad look for the club. They have handled it very well today. Apologetic but also it seems looking after Conchie, who is yes still young at 19. I did & said plenty of dumb things as a 19 yr old, all well before iPhone 1.
Though sounds like the Nix Reserve coaches at the game itself, didn't cover themselves in glory or take ownership of Conchie's actions.

Just the way it is nowadays any entertainment/known entity is expected to make a public statement about any controversy whether it's genuine or damage control you've got to make it or else you're getting herds of people upset about trying to push it under the rug or ignoring it. I'm not necessarily opposed to how this is but there are definitely some cases of it where it can be ridiculous.

The point is, you make mistakes as a kid (yes I still call a 19 year old a kid, because you are still a kid as a teenager).
Everyone here, including Shaun Gill, has made an offensive/inappropriate/unacceptable comment as a teenager. For Shaun Gill, a 40-something year old man, and every other adult on this forum, to berate, blast, and potentially ruin the life of a teenager for a comment that they have all made at one point in their life, is hypocritical and wrong in my opinion.
While I don't support the comments that were made, nor accept them, I'm willing to stand by my view. If the kid is genuinely apologetic and remorseful, don't attempt to ruin his life.

She just said that it was already in the media straight away at the end of the game and in the online media cycle it wasn’t waiting for 6 pm.
No time to do any kind of clemency or mediation between the teams or clubs.
I think club and player have handled this well. It’s a horrendous incident and yes, while he’s young, an example needs to be set and the club were left with absolutely no choice. Definitely agree with the poster that it shows good character that he didn’t deny and appears open and remorseful. Serve his time and come back stronger, it’s on him to make the most of this and not throw a huff.

1) Most people here who care (a minority) know who I am, there aren't that many opinionated women goalkeepers in Auckland. 2) You don't know me, you don't know what I did or what I didn't do as a teenager, so let me fill you in: I did worse in my day than calling someone a homo or whatever Finn Conchie said. And you know what? I faced consequences for my bad behaviour, and as a result cleaned my act up to the best that I could. I am glad that Finn is facing consequences - public consequences - and I hope he won't let this derail his football career, but instead come back stronger and better.
