So Ivan says the Phoenix Reserves are very good for the league. Can hear furious clicking of needles at Kiwitea and comments that Ivan is not one of them

Yes , yes , very surprising ,I'm shocked ..... I'd have bet on him ripping NZF a new one , right up to them not finding room for several of the womens teams and a new franchise based in NZFs lunchroom ....

But then again , Ivans a Pro and knows what the current spin required is ....

when pressed, ivan's hardly going to say he disagrees with it.  we are not allowed to have opinions in new zealand.

Thats true but then what skin does Ivan have in it anymore? He is in the twilight years and as much as Danny Hay talks bollocks, at least he speaks his mind. I agree that Ivan might trot out the party line but do you think he would if he was really really against it?

it's not like it's the only league in the world to have a reserve team in it. Don't see too much downside to be honest.

Would love to see this team in the semis, just because they are not allowed to win it.

Yep ...and the Under 20s too , just to underline what a complete clusterf@ck the whole shemozzle is ...

Aren't they? I know they can't qualify for O Lge- but what are the other conditions?

Heard piney talking about it on Friday afternoon. Apparently they are not allowed to win it (obviously) therefore can't play in the final; YET are allowed to play in the semi final. WTF?

Kotahitanga. We are one.

Shambles.

Three for me, and two for them.

It's a shame as with that side they would indeed be contenders. Think many here are downplaying their chances

FFS. We're either in this competition or we're not. This half in with only certain players playing if the other team agrees and only being able to play up until the semifinals is a load of half arsed bs.

Ironically it is probably those who say our inclusion in this competition makes it a joke who are insisting on these conditions and therefore they are the ones making it a joke. Reserves teams are in leagues around the world, it's actually quite normal.

In a nations top tier though? Bit weird you must admit.

that's true. But it's not like our national league really has a second tier. Even then, I don't see much downside to the nix being in the league. Hardly the end of the world.

Looks like on social media just now they are calling the reserve team the "Wellington Phoenix Premiership Team" or "Phoenix Premiers" for short. Maybe trying to not downgrade the rep of the league by calling their team the "reserves"?

Bundesliga and La Liga have 2nd/reserve teams in their system. Until the advent of a national 3rd league,  reserve teams could play in the 2nd Bundesliga. I think reserve teams can play in the 2nd tier in Spain. I think in both instances the reserve team and 1st team can't be in the same league as each other, so can't be promoted if 1st team is in league above or get dropped a division if 1st team get relegated to the same level.

NIX XI:Sail(GK), Blake, Dimairo, Boyd, Hicks, Gulley, Rufer, Cunningham, Pratt, Boxall, Stevens

Chucked $8 on the Wee Nix after seeing that line up, $4.50 seems very good value.

It's also quite common in Eastern Europe. Off the top of my head I'm pretty sure that the Czech, Romanian, and Ukrainian leagues all have reserve teams in the league system, for instance (yay, I learnt something playing Football Manager)

My team list was from the Tee Dubs twitter account, he wasn't 100% sure as the handwriting was hard to read.

Not true. Asked about this. Can win the thing. just can't compete in O-league.

Thought it was quite competitive and even in first half. TW deserved win in the end though, nix fell away in second half.

Not the greatest of games today, although wind probably didn't help in that regard. Thought Tee Dubs tried to play far too much long ball, particularly in the second half. Midfield for both sides was pretty non-exisitent for the last 20-30 minutes leading to end to end play.

That TW side has some good players in it.

O'Keefe, Fa'arodo, Peverley, Smith, MUSA, Chettleburgh, Corrales being the ones that I've heard of who've made a bit of noise and I'm sure the others are decent.

Actually, who the f played? https://www.facebook.com/wellingtonphoenixfc/photo...

this post has the team without Boxall and then in comments Boxall conceded the peno? Or is the Phoenix FB not sure about its players...

I suspect that graphic was done before TW allowed the 2 U20 players to play. They probably forgot to update the picture before posting it.

Dunno what I expected today. Looking at the line ups I might have guessed that the Phoenix with a line up that included Boxall, Boyd, Hicks, brindell-South, Cunningham and Rufer ( all first team squad members albeit with different levels of playing time) might have been a bit strong.Boyd was solid ( first half especially) , Hicks was a bit inconsistent and Rufer had moments of real class but also got cleaned up a bit. B-S looked like he was playing CB next to Boxall ( and did OK without really standing out) , Gulley at LB.Cunningham did bugger all. A kid from St Pats ( McGarry , any relation to Michael?) that Jr knows came on for about 15v minutes and looked quite good in the limited things he had to do.

Funniest thing for us- Corrales ( could pick a fight in an empty room) was gobbing off at the ref and got told to stop. Carried on in what I assume was Spanish and the ref didn't understand a thing. Jr's been doing Spanish at school and was able to fairly accurately translate for me

Oh,  those spicy sausages - big thumbs up from Jr and me

thought Cunningham was too for the first half hour. But didn't see a lot of the ball after that.
