Phoenix to play in Auckland, Christchurch

I've been thinking about this and have a solution.

Yes we should take the Phoenix on the road.

Yes we should play regular season games in both Auckland and Christchurch.

The FFA are right, we need to spread the word of footy throughout NZ

The FFA don't even need to offer a financial incentive for the Nix

I suggest we play Newcastle in Auckland and Sydney in Christchurch

NB.  My plan only works if both Sydney and Newcastle are the home teams.......

all will be revealed when the season tickets are up for renewal which is anytime in march/april onwards and we will see

a) how much is our new season tickets
b) how many home games we actually get

this will reveal whether we are indeed going to be playing games in auckland or christchurch, i do think that christchurch SHOULD have an a-league team and should put in a bid of their own however i dont want the phoenix to travel round NZ in a circus fair, we need to work on travelling with the phoenix already as going from 15 degrees to 40 degrees is a huge shock on the sytem, the plane travelling and time zones, we need to get our players used to that first and foremost, so moving our games around nz just worsens the situation travelling wise and will not be fair to the fans and the players as well.

I'm all for it for playing pre-seaon games wherever you want, but keep the home games in Wellington!!

I liked the idea when Team welly couldnt play in newton park a few weeks ago so they played in Porirua, this was ok for the fans as it was still in wellington, if the phoenix moved about wellington then fine as its still home territory but we need to concentrate and establish ourselves, pull in more fans, make the ring of fire a fortress !

We'll know before the season tickets go on sale (March? You're kidding - why so early?). They need to have this decided before the season ticket details can be determined.

The Phoenix can't move around Wellington, can they? Where else has the capacity to hold 12000-odd fans? It was fine for TW because having an active fan-base of around 1000 means there are more options. The attendance at Porirua seemed a lot less than at Newtown too and I know several regulars who couldn't get out to Porirua.

To allow Ticketek to process all season memberships in a timely fashion. This generous 5 month window should ensure that members' passes are recieved by at least the 2nd or 3rd home game...

Fantastic point - make the games we play outside of Welly away games - that way we lose nothing and the word is spread!

Seriously though, I doubt that we'll see a repeat of last season's debacle. Going into this season, they will have a full cycle in which to have everything prepared. Last year they were obviously caught out by how quick it all came about.

Ticketek and Ticketmaster are no different really. I've used both a lot and experienced the odd hiccup at the hands of both. To be honest, when it came to rectifying each of those hiccups Ticketek were the better of the two. They refunded my money. Ticketmaster merely asked the venue if they would comp me some tickets - meaning the venue coughed up for Ticketmaster's mistake.

i was told march/april by ticketek. i myself thought its a tad early, however i suppose like you mentioned they prob want to get all season tickets processed so that everyone has their season pass in time, i know mines took a while before i got my card.

and if they offer free gifts with the season ticket, they better send them out to EVERYONE who buys a season pass and not just some, i had to phone to ask where mines was and fortuntaly i got it, but a lot of people on here missed out on theirs and that aint fair.

Also if they are gonna add a $8.50 booking fee for delivery method they better make sure they send it as i and many others paid this fee and we had to take a trip down to welly to st james theatre to PICK UP SEASON TICKET!!

Ticketek always charge a booking fee for pick-up. If I recall correctly, it's normally $8. Post in the normal mail is $8 too, with courier being $11. Ezy Ticket (you print it out yourself from a pdf) is normally $5 - but that wouldn't be applicable to a season ticket of course.

Ticketmaster charge something like $6 for pick-up. I've never had them post me tickets, so I don't recall their charge for postage.

I don't think Ticketek know when the season tickets will go on sale. They're just the agency. When they have information, they normally have it on-line with a "not yet on sale" notice. I think they're just fobbing you off with any answer at this stage.

What a surprise, yet another topic turns into a season ticket blah, blah, blah zzzzzzzzzzz
Permalink Permalink

well not really because the season ticket will tell us what games are at westpac and what are not. i think IF the games are to be played away from ring of fire then season ticket holders should get in for FREE, anyone else think so?

i think Tony P will get back to terry and FFA after reading our comments and hopefully tell them where to go and this whole topic will have helped the casue of the phoenix as if you take the games out of wellington, you are taking the heart out of the club as without yellow fever and other season ticket holders backing the team vocally and there in the stands of westpac then that 12th man dissapears and the advantage of playing at home dissapears.

Season tickets will tell us about the games? You're putting the cart before the horse. The season ticket details will be based on the fixture list and not the other way round.

Auckland is a good choice if we want 20 people in the crowd, you know look really proffesional like.

That way the A-league will def want to renew our licence in future years to come just like the good old kings, oops i mean knights, i mean you know that team that was sometimes on the tv even for a home game, yeah they played in Auckland.

as far as im concerned this is the WELLINGTON Phoenix, it would be like the Hurricanes having a home game in Durban.

Totally stupid.

I was gonna buy a season ticket for me and the woman but not if they insult the wellington fans.

How can a season ticket holder watch a "Home" game on TV?? What a great scheme to alienate the best thing going fo the nix, the people that turn up to the games.  If this happens avearge attendance will drop off as people feel it's not  a Wellington team anymore.

garry that is a really good point about the average attendances, they will drop off, the whole point of going to games is to see your team play LIVE in person, great crowd atmosphere and have a good time, how can you do that watching a home game live on TV??

I have only ever watched 2 home games on TV this season and that was the first 2 home games (i was in auckland before moving to welly) and i would have prefered being at the match, it just wasnt the same!

The season has just finished with the A League GF last Sunday. We will know the 08/09 fixture in the next 2-3 weeks and how many games we will have. I expect membership packages released in April. Will keep you updated with progress.

Good news about the fixtures coming out so soon. Sure hope we get proper one week home game followed by next week away etc. Last season was a farce with the Phoenix having a block of 4 away games in a row.

What about the two new teams? Does this mean they will be confirmed 100% in the next few weeks as well?

The two new sides have a fortnight to answer questions from the FFA before they are confirmed.

Schedules have more to do with ground share than anything.  There are already 3 consecutive weeks where the stadium here is booked for Rugby and the Women's U-17 World Cup, so we can assume the Phoenix won't be in Wellington then, and our early season will depend on the Air New Zealand Cup draw.

Maybe its those unavailable dates for the stadium that FFA were looking at to be played elsewhere in NZ?

how awesome is this club that the CEO will come on the forum and directly answer fans like that?

and this forum is awesome...

I think if you want to get guys outside Welly to a Phoenix game why not organise a big road trip/rally of some sort for specific games with deals on tickets....

as you said there seem to be a few yellow fever members from outside the region...

Don't make the mountain go to Mohammed, send a bus and get Mohammed to the mountain!

or a train or whatever...

anyway thats my two cents...

heheh china????
wanna go...sad won't get to see Felipe play...but Bertos should be awesome....

go the 'nix...

sorry very unrelated...but

anyone know if you can get a-league games through the net somewhere if you pay?...or if there are any full games available on dvd? only got to see the beckham game....listened to others...

cheers

All home games in Wellington. Maybe let Christchurch have a pre-season. Auckland - you've got to be joking.

Or rather, the Air NZ Cup draw should depend on the Phoenix's schedule since we pull much better crowds than the Lions.

We pull much better crowds than the Hurricanes too.

The Hurricanes pull LARGER crowds, but they just sit down and clap when a try is scored.

auckland have already had their chance to host football games and they didn't turn up. it would be a disgrace to the Phoenix to see them playing in front of quiet and small auckland crowd. keep the games in wellington. if they are so desperate to go elsewhere, try christchuch for a pre-season game, i think christchurch had a pre season game last season but cannot confirm. Keep the Wellington Phoenix in Wellington

If we cannot get all our home games at the Westpac, rather than looking to Christchurch or Auckland I reakon we should be looking closer to home, how about Mclean Park Napier, weekend trip for the Yellow Fever.  I'm sure we would get a warm reception in the Hawke's Bay, there were plenty of people from that area down here for the LA Galaxy weekend. In the past Napier used to be a strong bastion of the game.

If you want a weekend trip for the Fever, then Napier would come down lower on the list than Christchurch. Christchurch is serviced by air travel from Wellington much more than Napier.

can you imagine 5000 making the trip down south? They'd have to put on special transport! Hmmmmm not a bad idea.....

You can drive up to Napier in 5hrs max from Wellington. If you live in Paraparamu or Upper Hutt  4 hrs. Promote the game and the Phoenix closer to home.
Permalink Permalink
about 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Or you can fly to ChCh in 45 minutes. Taking into account the transport modes, ChCh is closer than Napier. Given that ChCh would be far ahead of Napier in terms of being a potential A-League franchise site, any desire to promote the game would be more righly targeted to ChCh. Wlg-ChCh flights are cheaper than Napier flights too, due to the greater volume. A couple of short flights to ChCh versus a 10 hour round-trip to Napier... no contest. I'd take ChCh.

Spread the love through pre-season but the league stays here.

DKP22 - spot on. I'm 100% sure the club have taken all our comments on board and that they will be expressed to FFA in due course. having said that, They'l probably ignore it and have the Nix Playing a home game on Norfolk Island!

I've got it!

Why don't the FFA add a 28th round to the A-league, with the extra game being played abroad at a neutral venue?

This way, everyone (not just the Phoenix) will play a game without their "12th man", but the A-league gospel can be spread to footballing outposts around the globe.

Just imagine something like...

Perth v Gold Coast in LA ("We're watching/playing the wrong Galaxy")
Newcastle v CCM in Dhaka
Phoenix v Adelaide in Auckland (We'll race you to the airport")
Thunder v Queensland in Tashkent
Sydney v Melbourne in Sarajevo ("My grandpa and your grandpa..iko iko ..")

..the possibilities and $$$ are endless. It might take a while to catch on, but after a few years, I'm sure fewer folks will genuinely be asking "Who are ya???"

I can't believe this hasn't been thought of before wolfman2008-03-02 13:43:24

Morning Tony

We all appreciate the constant feedback you give via the forum, on this subject you've stated that nothing has been decided and that it is the FFA asking the question.

Please could you tell us how the powers that be at the club feel about this proposal?

Thanks
