Phoenix to play in Auckland, Christchurch

Well, I for one (and I may be the only one) am OK with the Phoenix playing a game out of town (but probably no more than one given the league is now not being expanded and there will only be 10 or 11 home games in total). The Cantabs delivered a good crowd pre-season last year and I reckon its worth testing the AUckland market.

I think it could be a positive initiative for the exposure of the Phoenix nationally, for the profile of football outside Wellington, for merchandising etc, it gives the Fever the chance to go on tour en masse - we could get a helluva crowd to Auckland or Chch for $59 fares.

And on top of that, if the league is expanded to ten sides in 2009 and we are playing as many as 14 home games, i think we would need to spread a couple of games around the country to avoid any fan fatigue at home (not amongst the YF hardcore, but the general Wellington sports fan).

Whatever happens, it should be built into the price of our season tickets though.

I think I saw his profile on NZ Dating once.  You could try to catch him there.

14 home games is bugger all, surely? Fan fatigue? If it only takes 14 home games to generate fan fatigue, then the future is not bright. And if fan fatigue is the case for travelling, where is the "helluva crowd" to go on tour going to come from?

And as for the costs.... $59 fares, if you're lucky - fare prices are demand-based and the $59 slot will go very quickly if that many are going to travel. But anyway, say you get them and it's $118. Travel to and from Auckland airport will cost as much again, Christchurch would be less but still not free. If it's an evening game, you're looking at accommodation and disbursements. So, what are we looking at, at least $350 of additional costs for a game that should be in Wellington. Blx to that - play the games in Wellington!

$350 hahaha. Its way cheaper to go to a game in Auckland. For a start you drive back after the game, that also saves you a bundle on booze as you cant drink and drive.

I think14 games will stretch our market. This is not the UK. This is not Argentina. Football is not life nor religion - unfortunately. And we are not used to following any sport, football included, for 27 or 28 rounds. I am hugely optimistic about the future of football and the Phoenix. Wellington has a strong football community and a game sports public, but we are still building the Phoenix into our city fabric.

For similar reasons I am also not a fan of the FFA expanding the season too quickly. The Australasian football market is still young and I think the game is better served for the meantime by a relatively compact and more intensively marketed season.

And even if we accept the $350 figure, that is far cheaper than the $1350 you are looking at for a trip to sydney or melbourne. plus, feverish blows at least $200 at the bar at the backbencher - throw in a kebab and a cab home and he might as well be flying to Chch, chasing Swedish tourists at a backpackers and sneaking a bottle of JDs into QE2.

I agree that the games should be in Wellington.

I would point out that some of us did actually fork out that kind of dosh on a regular basis to get to games last season

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

the polls pretty even

too many out of towners on here. With the expansion plans delayed I'll be very angry if a game is moved from wellington

Great pic of the Croat Club btw. Too bad it couldn't include the statue of some naked, presumably famous Croat.

Three for me, and two for them.

Its the double negative type question, i almost pushed no thinking that i didn't want them to play away. So not so much democracy as badly worded.

i think you are on to something there sloth

I came up with a slogan "vote no now!"  - then it occured to me that wasn't exactly going to help

So here's the latest slogan ...
"Vote yes to say no!"

you mean
Do you object to the Oly-Whites (and girls) go to Beijing?
then half of us would push yes when we mean no

or
Do you not object to the Oly-Whites (and girls)not going to Beijing?

Confusing would have been

Have you stopped supporting the Phoenix playing home games away?

Yes

No

Or

Have you not stopped supporting the Phoenix not playing home games away?

I can understand where you Wellington dudes are coming from, I think I'd be annoyed if my season ticket would be cut down. A trial should be done, if we get an awesome turnout, then for sure, keep them as a once a year thing, cause sh*t at the Auckland game i'll be there, this season we're gonna be coming down for as many games as possible.
But yeah it is a Wellington club etc etc

ha ha - i must confess (given my own stated opinions on this matter) to a touch of manipulation there - who wants to be "objectionable"?

would you prefer that the Phoenix play in either Wellington rather/instead of other cities aswell as in Wellington, or exclusively the first option?

yes

no

There should have been a maybe option, or a good old fashioned IF,THEN,ELSE clause.
