So where did I say we shouldn't sign? I merely pointed out some of the difficulties we would have in getting across the line. ie. we have other significant holes to fill, and of the players coming off contract in that position (Bertos), he'd be a massive upgrade in salary (and quality).

Ifill's contract couldn't cover Kosta?
03 Apr 09:21

Possible.

03 Apr 11:17

Surely

03 Apr 19:42

That would be a great signing in my opinion. Basically an import-quality player without taking up an import slot?

If Ifill is really intent on staying in Wellington, this might also mean we can offer him something small to be an impact player for us next season.

A-League writer/analyst David Davutovic reckons we "might make play" for Marcos Flores.

Don't know what that's based on but he'd be a handy pick up.

07 Apr 04:35

He was at the game last night ..but does live in Sydney

I would be ok if Flores was a replacement for Lia in the starting unit. Anywhere else......

Grumpy old bastard alert

It would be daft to sign Flores, we don't need another play maker. We need a box to box midfielder to play instead of Lia.
07 Apr 04:59

Unless Carlos is going, would be a strange signing. Wasn't good at CCM or Melb either.

What we really need if we are all honest, is at  least four quality players.

Yes but we only have 5 roster slots & 1 visa spot available. We gotta do the best with what we have for another season at least.

Well lets all expect the same again, because anyone that thinks we are in with a shout is just dreaming.

Almost time to make McGlinchey an offer for next season he cannot refuse. Would still allow for the visa player to be recruited.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but is Chris James a box-to-box midfielfder?

I think most people would like him to have a chance at the Nix but Ernie knew he was available and said he isn't interested in him. It is rather strange.

He isn't U22 or over 30

There has to be some backstory because he would definitely improve us and our standards have bee pretty low in recruiting mid-season replacements.

Normo's coming home

Love some of your guys suggestions and optimisim. But really what gives you the confidence that Welnix is ever going to spend some money on some players that might actually improve the team immediately Seems its all about 2/3 years when the the talent we have is ready to compete.

Wont that be about the time those same players want to move overseas.Welcome to the spoon guys its about the only thing we will ever win.

Fuck i must like pain as that still wont put me off.

PS Gareth isnt it about time you put some focus on Hurricanes attendance.

It would be nice if Welnix as a whole group and not just Gareth Morgan, made their intentions loud and clear, especially for next season. Do they want the Phoenix to improve and do they want to improve the Phoenix? Ernie can do only so much with what he has at his disposal.

Sure some of our newish youngsters will be better off with this season behind them and sure they have some great potetntial. But they do need some experienced and quality players around them to improve them. Mcglinchey would be a decent signing as he has shown at CCM, just how big a gap he left when he moved. Took them a fair few games to recover.

Ideal pick-up IMO. Put a 27 yr-old 6 ft war-horse in among the boys.

he's an import.

Bye bye Stein.

Do they really need to? I thought that they've made in quite clear in the past what their inentiions are for the club.

I don't know what else you expect to be honest. We know who is on what contracts and no doubt we will be told when they sign someone new.

09 Apr 03:09

Will Adams get another year?

I would have originally argued no, but actually thought he looked quite good in his cameo. Certainly better than he did out wide at RB in the warm up games etc. Will be interesting to see if he gets a run this weekend.

Bertos is gone and Hysegems imo so there should be plenty of money to play with especially when we add in Ifill's wages.

I can't see him asking for or getting too much coin next year (ifil), for the simple reason, we can't bank on him being fit and available after doing his achilles.

They don't want to spell it out because people won't like it. You can imply what they think by their actions so far. Their plan is to play some sort of moneyball - 'do more with less'. The problem is it won't work here. Moneyball worked in Oakland, in MLB, because of reasons specific to that sport - multi year contracts allowing long term stability and planning, a long season which enables the cream to rise to the top, the statistical nature of the game, the importance of your team's farm system and the importance this placed on developing your own players etc etc. None of those things exist here. Lonegunmen points out that anyone we develop will just look to move overseas. In the A-League planning in advance of one season just seems pointless. CCM have basically achieved this admittedly but I think the future will be a struggle for them too

McGlinchey would be a fantastic signing and is exactly the type of player we need. It's clear though that Welnix are not willing to match J-League wages. Of course, it is there money, they can do what they like and without them we wouldn't have a team but their ownership strategy really has us heading for a prolonged stay at the bottom. The owners have said they want the Phoenix to be profitable, I simply don't think that would be possible wherever we came on the ladder.

If Paul and Stein are gone then how do we have only 1 import spot available? Get we have 1 Fijian, 1 Spainish and 2 Costa Ricans. Was Roy an injury replacement for Paul? Is Roy on one year or two?

"Who ate all the pies"

Roy was injury replacement for Ifill. He is on a 2 year deal.

That would have his contract ending in the middle of a season, which would be odd. He is definitely here next season, but is he here the season after as well?

Injury replacement for this season and then 2 yr contract starts.

He is still contracted to CCM, he is only on loan (with an option to buy).

Roy holds a Indian passport - Makes him a AFC player under the +1 system (4 imports + AFC import). Not that the A-League uses it.

So in the A-League is it 5 imports + Marquee, Or 5 imports including Marquee?.

Mr Positive

The latter. 5 imports only. Marquee can be one but doesn't have to be. Local marquee cannot be.

We should sign Michael Fitzgerald to play ahead of Ben Sigmund, and therefore enable him to play for the All Whites again.

That now strikes me as sensationally unamibitious.
