Sigh. Next thing we'll hear Luke Rowe trialling for Basildon Bees.

There will be pretty stiff competition. He won't be able to just waltz on into Basildon.

The Bees U13s were virtually unbeaten last season.  May have their work cut out in the U14 Chelmsford League Div 2 however.

Was just thinking that:

PANCHO Usucar a former Adelaide United holding midfielder and Uruguayan under 20 international wants to return to Australia.
The 27-year-old is currently a free player after his Ecuadorian club Tecnico Universitario allowed Usucar a leave pass to return to Uruguay to care for his ill mother.
"She is much better now,"Usucar told In the Mixer.
"But now I really want to come back and play in the A-League."
Usucar left Adelaide last year and fired a parting shot at Reds former boss John Kosmina.
Ironically Usucar probably fits into Gombau's plans perfectly given the type of level headed midfield traits he displayed under former boss Rini Coolen when the ball was mostly played on the deck under the Dutchman's reign.

this is both good and bad. If he does get signed then a positive for him and nz football, however hoffenheim have been pretty shiet the past two seasons so if he's not able to break into the reserve team...

I remember Usucar playing under Coolen. He was a technically very good midfielder.......Could be an interesting pickup for the Nix. Right age, right position and has already played A-League and wants to come back. Certainly in form he would be someone who would fit in with Ernies style........much better prospect than an elderly journeyman like Thompson IMO. Ernie should get on the blower to Trani.....he was Coolen's assistant when Pancho was at Adelaide.....he would give him the low down on the player. If Trani says he's OK then we should sign him. Someone should get in touch with Domey or Ernie...make sure they are in the loop. He could be the key signing we are looking for.
With Cunningham, Carlos and Pancho we would have a a core of latin flair.....who would have ever thought the Nix would go down that path.

Usucar  is a decent player but not what we need. We have Muscat & Lia who can screen the back four. We need someone to transition from defence into attack, which is not something he was known for with Adelaide.

I remember him more as a playmaker from DM rather than a Tim Brown type defensive stopper. The guy is only 5ft 7....so he is no muscleman DM. He played Uruguay under age internationals as a DM...I think you will find he knows how to pass a ball.

Tim Brown was a 'defensive stopper'? News to me.

Here is 13 minutes of 'highlights' of Usucar in the A-League. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgvxV0EVoUQ

It is almost all clips of him breaking up the play or passing sideways and then moving backwards.

Not that google translate adds much value but apparently he is a Volante mixto - or joint steering wheel >.>

It midfielder playing alongside the central midfielder in 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 . Like his sidekick, try to recover the ball for his team, but also have to join the attack to reach goal positions.

Technicians in this position often choose dynamic players, capable of cutting a pass near his own area and reach the opponent to define with a shot or head-and with good technique to pass and shoot the ball. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have excelled in this position for Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively.

Whether he is any good, well what do I know :P ?

Personally think he was pushed deeper for Adelaide than he probably naturally was used to.

They had Flores, Vidosic, Ramsay etc as all attackers and no other real DM options at the time so think he was forced back.

Actually think the vid from RR showed off his ability to pass the pass and move it forward quickly - which is what we want - as well as defensively strong (I only watched first 2 mins then got bored)

No Flores that season. Also a few games he was playing left & right back before being pushed into the midfield with subs.

You have to watch right until the end to see his only assist for the season. There were a number of times the break was on and he needed to continue his run forward but would jog back to DM instead. Whether this was Farina's instructions, we will never know.

He would probably play Manny/Lia's role better than them but it isn't what we are after.

My impression of Usucar was that he was very ordinary for an import. Failed to impress in a rubbish Coolen team and was moved on by an underwhelmed Kosmina. Doesn't excite me at all.

The video confirmed what I remember of him. Defensively very good....he times his tackles very well and has good anticipation. Can pass with either foot. Seems to have OK distribution....some nice forward passes in there including some one touch stuff. Already knows the A-League, right age, right position. Like I said if Trani gives him the thumbs up we should seriously look at signing him. Much better player than Lia or Thompson IMO.....would suit Ernies style of play.

For those who don't rate this guy....who are you suggesting we sign instead? or should we stick with journeymen players like Lia and maybe Thompson? Its not as though Ernie has a long list of DM's to chose from. IMO if we go into this season with Lia and Muscat in midfield then Ernies game plan is seriously handicaped.

yeah we're already really good at passing sideways and backwards. It's passing forward that's the problem.

The more I hear about what Ernie's doing at the Nix - especially kicking out Ricki's more obvious favourites like Lindsay, Totori and Lochhead - the more this sounds like that time the Germans bought the nuclear power plant on The Simpsons and went around with their jaws dropping at all the safety violations, green goo leaking out of things, etc. If this were The Simpsons Ernie would corner Ricki in Rotorua and beg him to take the Nix back.

it seems we have space in the cap for only one more senior signing, so it's thompson or an import.  doesn't quite add up to me in terms of the players we moved on in the off season.

Why doesn't it add up? We don't have Paston, Lochead, Sanchez, Smith, Lindsay or Totori any longer. I don't think any of them were on that big of a salary and Totori and Lindsay would have taken some payout which is still on the cap.
Against that Hernandez and Cunningham have come in which are both likely to be significantly higher than any of those who left. Plus Caira, Rufer, and the new keeper who will probably add up to 150k.

Wouldnt be surprised if owners wanted to be well under cap. Prob pains them to pay anyone

Rob Morrison at the members meeting said clearly that we were going to spend the full cap (but no more).

The start of that video is defintiely the 10/11 season where Flores was in the side.. he's in the videos.
They did play together

Trani is now with the Roar.

Its not that I don't rate him, it is that he isn't what we are looking for.  In The Zone said we tried to sign a guy called Barry Maguire, sadly there are not any agents clips of him online. He scores a couple goals in this clip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh9SArk45HE You can see him in a few clips making late runs from midfield, which is something that Tim Brown used to do for us but wouldn't see from Usucar.

Wow he's 23 - would have been a pretty decent signing for an import
Maybe thats a glimpse at the sort of age Ernie is trying to find - a long term player
