I think Watson will get picked up.

I liked him at the u20 WC when he played seemed to have a decent touch and movement for a big guy and he will offer something a little different to what we have which I think is important.

I think we have too many guys competing for 3 positions to add another one into the mix. Especially compared to how bare we are at left and right back and central midfield.

He's still in the mix. Been out injured

That frontline just as a lot of competition and isn't that the idea?

To an extent, but not when you completely sacrifice your ability to cover injuries in other positions. And what about any competition for those spots?

Yeah I'd probably tell Watson to destroy it at TeeDubs this year, then next year a few more guys will be released and there will be a chance for a spot up top.

Think a Gulley or maybe a Bertsch would be logical.

Gulley because of his versatility.

Guess it depends if we are still in for an import DM or not

I think given the frontline of Hernandez, Rufer, Cunningham, Bertos, Ifill, Brockie, Huysegems that Watson or Stevens will miss out and that yeah Gulley or Bertsch will get a spot. Bertsch if his residency has come through etc? If that's even the case...

Still want that overseas DM though and decent RB/LB cover

Also whether there is money left for a higher profile visa player. Say we had signed Thomson, or another similar aussie/kiwi, there is no point in holding the visa spot if you don't have money to fill it. At that point Bertschs nationality becomes irrelevant.

Saw a comment from Merrick about Gulley in a recent article, something about him being able to play fullback as well?

Central mid + fullback cover = pretty much exactly what we need you would think

Import status is always relevant. We can't have another situation where we have a player who isn't playing taking up an import spot. It just negates the purpose of dumping Sanchez and Smith. We dropped those players because they weren't good enough to hold import spots. Is Bertsch any better than either of them? No.

Thompson not signing is interesting - in the Ricki era, he would've been snapped up already. Like the fact that Ernie is giving the kids a real go - they seem to be stepping up to the task, too.

yeah but as the season wears on..... The kids all stepped up at the start last season but soon 'died out', I can only assume due to the riggers/pressures of their first full season, would it really be worth taking the risk on youth in such crucial positions?
then again, its probably impossible to be worse than lia.

He might be better for all I know, seen him twice, may well have more potential. He is at least I assume cheaper.
There is no advantage to only using 4 visa spots. I would prefer a very good, established, central midfielder and it seems natural to me that a visa spot should be used for it. But if the roster is almost full and there is only 50k left under the cap, you are not going to get one. Explain to me how it is relevant then?

Yeh- I think the fact is that neither of them are what we want- inexperience against recent experience of not being good enough. We need a defining central/defensive midfielder and that isn't Vinnie or Manny at this point, unless they improve dramatically on last year.
Ricki had a good track record of getting results out of players who had been released by other clubs, but most of those weren't over 30.

Think a bit factor is that we already have 2 experienced 'hard working' DM's in Lia and Manny. Thompson, while probably a better player and a more likely goal scorer than both, is still quite similar and is basically 'more of the same'

Interesting that 2 weeks ago Ernie said he's not looking for a new central midfielder and he was happy with Lia and Muscat.  Now he's holding space in the cap for an overseas player.

I think he does a good number in projecting positive vibes in the media about the players.  He's making the right noises but there's no way he's going into the season with those two in central midfield, I'm sure of it.

I agree but it's also likely we won't find this mythical foreign DM to solve our midfield woes and Lia , Manny and maybe Gulley will be all we have to choose from.

My impression of what he was saying two weeks ago was that they were still holding space in the cap for an overseas player, but that using it was no longer a priority as he was happy to start the season with Lia and Muscat (while keeping the joker of the visa spot in the pack).
