Not sure what you 'know' AWB, but according to published stuff Ross's future has not been decided

Ross - still unsure if retiring or not, will depend on the back injury, and the term he can strike with the club.

Elrich has to be demoted to a squaddie, if he stays on at all.

Rees - I'd like to see stay on as a reserve player, maybe even starting in the central 'D' in a 4-4-2 formation, with Sigmund in the middle with him.

What if we do sign Durante and Sigmund? That means we'll have Dodd, Durante, Rees, Sigmund and, very arguably Old, vying for the central defensive positions. Probably one, if not two, too many.

Reckon we'll be looking at signing two central defenders, a right-back and a striker. At least.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Durante is still an if is he not? I'm sure i heard that Sigmund is just finalising a few things - so he'd be pretty much guaranteed. So by my count, and I'm possibly wrong - Rees, Sigmund, Dodd, Old playing for 2 central defence spots in a 4-4-2 formation. More than enough room.

it all seems blindingly obvious - let Old go

That's about the size of it.

I'd keep Rees, but IF we sign the people we're rumoured to be signing, I just don't see there would be room for him.

From the vibe coming out of the club don't expect too many changes for next season. Tony Pignata on Radio Sports Sunday night was asked about recruitment. He said that there will be 3 to 4 new players coming in next season.

Rickie also said they will be going to Europe soon to look at players with an eye to reinforce the defence, and a striker. He also said they would be playing 4.4.2 next year and would recruit players to fill those rolls.

So expect a class right back, a couple of central defenders and hopefully a big name marquee striker.

One thing you can guarantee.....Terry will be spitting about coming last....he's not a coming last sort of guy....so expect him to dig deep financially for a star marquee striker!!!!

Yeah O'dor has gone, in all liklihood Ross will go, does that mean there are only one or two others leaving? Thats unlikely.

I'm not convinced by Rees, I'm not sure if a Dodd/Rees CB combination would have enough pace.

Does anyone know if Spoonley is still U20 next year?

Somewhere in the A-League?

It's probably not a great use of the salary cap having two equal international class 'keepers is it?james dean2008-01-21 11:00:13

I can't see it, unless expansion takes place and he finds a spot.  There are just too many good young Aussie keepers for someone to use an import space on an NZ keeper.

Yeah, and he's not going to go back to the NZFC...I think we'll see him for at least another year. I know him and his wife are pretty settled in Wellington

Spoonley, Draper and Costa are all still in the under 20 category for next year, as your age is only taken into account in regards to how old you are when you sign the contract.

All the 'keepers have signed 2 year deals and Paston has bought a house here, so I think it is safe to assume that all 3 will be here next year.

So you could get them on a 10 year deal and have them as under 20s forever?

expect to have pace on the wings and a striker that can head. hopefully with daniel and bertos or an improved elrich putting good crosses into the box for smeltz or a new marquee class striker that can use both legs and his head plus pace.
terry wouldnt want to finish last again.

If that is the case you can probably only sign them for two/three years at the most.

we dont need paston becasue were not auckland anymore

I'm not sure we should go dumping Paston, Spoonley has little experience and if Moss gets an injury we'll need another keeper to back him up if he's still not up to this level.

And is Paston really worth keeping, I mean I'm sure he's a great keepr, but clearly with no game time his performances will suffer. which can't be good for the phoenix

True, but I'd really like to see him replaced with a decent keeper though and only after they've found one should they let him go.

As clever as that sounds - it is a 2 year maximum (i.e. 1 year whilst 20). Costa was the only one of the 3 that was eligible for a 3 year deal. Read the FFA website - spells it out pretty clearly

It's in the best interest of the All Whites to not have NZ's two best keepers at the same club as one of them will suffer through lack of gametime. If the A-League expands for season 4 then Paston should seriously look at getting a contract with one of the new teams, and the Phoenix should replace him with another youngster.

As HN points out, NZers are imports for an australian side so thats an unlikely scenario

Spoonley is pretty unproven however, I'd be pretty nervous to see him starting in goal for the phoenix

*cough* *cough*

NZers are only foreign imports for an Aussie A-league side if they are playing in an AFC competition like the ACL. Otherwise, they are considered as non-foreign local players by the FFA in the A-league. So it is possible for NZ keepers to get some A-league game time while the Aussie keeper get a bit more ACL game time during that part of the season. If they are in an Aussie side that is in the A-league only, then it is not a problem for that season. If they are worthy keeper of high quality, then they would be considered one of the 4 foreign import for the side in an ACL competition and there is not real reason why Paston could not be in that category, given his international exposure and good solid reputation.

At least without a few O-League, friendly or pre-season cup games under his belt.

I'm not sure if any new club in Australia would have Paston, he was at the Knights and they didn't do too well and he's only had 4(?) games including internationals recently.

Not true.

Leo Bertos counts as a foreign player for Perth.  It was changed this season so the regular season squads align more closely with the Asian requirement.s

Try keep Ross, and if not, have him in a coaching-type role.

Get John too to be our marquee.

Elrich isn't quite back at his marquee level, but you'd suspect he'd be better for next season.

i mentioned it elsewhere but maybe Ricki & Tony wil ltry to exchange Paston somewhere in Europe...they both prob have contacts floating around.

i hope Brownlie goes, nothing against him but he just isnt up to it IMO

I agree, Brownlie needs to go and be replaced by a decent striker. I hope the European trip bears fruit. Critical_Lemon2008-01-21 22:44:40

Don't thinkl we really saw enough of Brownlie - given where he has played in the past I think a run of games would see him become a regular scorer.
