I would like a player like Archie Thompson statue, 29 years old, very experience and have plenty of years to go and is born in New Zealand with Australian international experience. He would thrive on our midfield ball service. He could be our Marquee player and not Melbourne's if the price is right. Of course, it depends on what we can get for the defence tho.
out of principle, no
You seriously wouldn't take Thompson? It would never happen but yeah.I don't see why people don't like him. He's pretty awesome. Always speaks his mind and seems like a good guy tbh. He has a lot of brain explosions when talking to the media though.

Don't mind them they speak from the principle from their hearts and not their minds. I would think he'll be a real crowd pleaser and will love to grab some attention from his country of birth. At least he wouldn't be boring and he has partner up with Vaughan Conveny before with the Melbourne Victory team and worked well together. Also being the only of two A-League players that were in the Oz WC squad in Germany 06 would provide good experience to impart to Shane.

When did Coveny and Thompson ever play on the same side ?

Huh? Oh I got Melbourne Victory and Melbourne South mixed up. My bad.

Anyway Thompson is better than Coveny. But it was only a suggestion to beef up the front end. After having defence is tighted, tidying up some the midfield ball service, gaining that one clean quality finisher, would get us contending for the title.

It's unlikely we get him, but he is marquee standard and to buy him as such and remove him from the next most likely title contender in Melbourne Victory is ideal.

But he is ideal type of striker we need to nab the title. Forwards getting goals win games, and defence stopping goals prevent lost games.

That's a sure way to win friends.

Incidentally.

1, There is no way Melbourne would let Archie leave for a rival side.
2, Archie never played for South Melbourne.

The closest they have ever come is being at Rival NSL and A-League clubs.  Hardly a way they would have built any familiarity.

3, Archie wouldnt want to leave melbourne for another a-league club. he loves the club, loves the fans and is a melbournian. if he leaves it would be for europe, and i dont think he is of euro standard.

That's a startlingly frank and realistic assessment from a Melbourne fan.  Pardon me for being suprised....

Bloke rang up SEN and said there was a whisper he wanted to go to the Premier League...

How about this, I'd go as far as to say he wouldn't make my 5 most hated A-League players list...but that's all you're getting.

TBH, I actually thought that Vaughan had a short stint with the Victory side rather than Archie at Souths. I know Archie wouldn't leave for a city rival, but I know Vaughan would.

When I first time I heard he went to Melbourne, i thought, "yeah whatever good riddance don't have to play him i'm going to the South Island anyway", and then later I heard it was for A-league team. It didn't occur to me then that it was a loan to newcastle united.

So yeah, I got my wires crossed and encoded the information wrong. Thats what happens when I'm half listening to information from my club manager.

Andrew Boyens with Ben Sigmund pairing would be interesting. But Andy might benefit at the MLS level rather than A-League but Toronto FC is doing a Nix by being at the bottom in their debut season but better with having full capacity crowds 3rd best in the whole MSL (14 teams).

Pignata said they were looking for a right back, centre back, attacking midfielder and a striker........so it could be Mulligan, Vichitich, Simon Elliot or James and that Aussie striker Porter.

Soon we will have all the All Whites playing for the Phoenix. hope we can do better than Porter...he's been injury prone and hastn't exactly set the English game on fire!!

Happy with the kiwi's but we must be able to find a good Brazilian with flair as a marque striker!

I wish people would get over this Brazilian thing. I just read an excellent piece in the Aussie Four Four Two by Simon Hill who pointed out that he has nothing against having Brazilians in the A-League but they should be judged on ability, not their nationality. I couldnt agree with him more.

Yep - who would you rather have : J. Aloisi or Patrick? Smeltz or Leandro Love?

Cassio, Daniel, Juninho are the only good brazilians in the league. Felipe is on and off - same with Denni.

I agree that player selection should be done on ability not on whether they are Brazilian or not. The problem witht the A-League Brazilians is that often they are selected unseen, based on agents reports or on past reputations.

Ricki and Pignata are planning to go to Brazil personally to check out the talent, which is the right way to do it. The problem with recruiting in Europe, especially the UK is that saleries are so big, that it is hard afford star players( e.g average salary of a striker in  first Div is around 500,000 pounds the next level up is 850,000 pounds, which is threequarters of the salary cap in the A-League)

That is what makes Brazil so exciting. They produce so many talented players that it is easier to find a gem at a price we can afford. The hard part is finding the right one.

Article in the Sunday Times (Perth)  states that Wellington Phoenix have made an offer to David Tarka (centre back) .
Perth have offered Tarka a performanced based contract for next season due to his injury plagued season.
The Phoenix offer is believed to be in excess of $150,000 per season. Though it doesn't say how long the contract is for i.e one, two or three years.
If he could stay injury free this would be a great signing for the Phoenix.
Those of you who say that Dodd needs someone at the back with him to give him some direction Tarka is that player.

Would be a decent signing as long as he doesn't injure himself again D: A fit Tarka would be great.

if the 'English' Elliot is Stu Elliot from Hull City, he's Irish

good player at league one, bit on the outer at anything above low championship, high scoring wide-left player (which makes me think it won't be him we are after as we aren't too badly off wide on the left)

though he has played central striker on occasions

(just read on another thread that it might be Hartlepool's Elliot)

Thought i would just mention this. I have just been on the RKC Waalwijk website and checked all match reports back to mid october and Vicelich hasnt played a single first team game. Definetely doesnt sound like a marquee....although he is still a good player.

If he's good enough for "low Championship" he'll piss this league.

Its Robbie Elliot - used to play for Newcastle, Bolton, Sunderland, Leeds...now at hartlepool..34 years old..always thought he was decent enough for the Championship..think I still have an old Shoot magazine with his poster in it kicking around in the Attic.. better at right back then CB if I remembercorrectly..

Tarek played really well as an attacking right back this season and that suits the style Ricki tried to get the team playing early on. If we get him I will be very happy, imagine him tearing up one wing and connecting with Leo with Tony Lochhead and Daniel on the other!

Haha, I was talking to Rob on saturday how happy a day it would be for me if the Nix signed a former Leeds player.

But his defensive qualities arent the best, which was our weak point. I wouldnt like to see him at the nix next season.
