yeah let's not play our best player
Exactly.  Let's not go too overboard on Fenton and Totori from that first up game (especially Totori).  Who would the Roar rather face, Ifill, even if he's only half fit or Totori?  I think it's a no brainer...

The other side of that is would we rather have ifill come off the bench and make sure he is 100% for the rest of the season.

I trust Ricki would know best in this situation. So am happy with either starting for this week.

Another question which may not come up for Sunday but will come up eventually.

Alex Smith vs a fully fit Vinnie Lia in a 2 man midfield - is Lia our forgotten man?

I fully prefer Smith to Lia in midfield. I think Smith offers more going forward and I generally edges Lia out in most metrics of footballing skill.
Lia has improved immensely over his time at the club and was pretty decent last season so its unfortunate but he doesn't fit into the starting 11 at the moment. Like Boxall probably won't get much game time unless injuries occur. But very glad they're there for any unfortunate occurrence (just as long as Lia is NOT played at RB!)
I'm not sure we would have re-signed Smith if we didn't intend to start him.

I like Lia a lot, and he was very effective in that backs-to-the-wall style of play we had last season. But if we are going to be playing a more expansive game this time round then Smith may well be the better bet. Certainly much more chance of him notching a few goals than Lia, and is generally a more creative player (although again Lia improved a lot in that department last season).

A lot will depend on whether Smith and Manny can mesh in the midfield, but early signs look promising.

smith v Lia is another no brainer for me, if Manny is to be the holding midfielder who distributes the ball then we need smith along side him, Lia for me is a less able version of Manny and we don't need two of them in a 2 man midfield. As for Totori or Ifill? I'm happy for totori to start at the moment, he'll cause the less physical roar guys some issues, Ifill when he comes on hopefully will bge just as problematic for them as always.

Weather forecast is for rain. I'd want to have Smith out there for his more accurate passing, Lia last week was all over the place.

Not sure how Totori will go with a sodden pitch, I expect it will be worse than Round 1. Maybe start Ifill to score a few goals and save Totori for later when the defence is half frozen?

Totori will be sweet on the bumpier than normal pitch - thugby game on Saturday - he'd be used to it with the crap he normally plays on. it may actually improve his first touch.

If it does, it'll affect the Roar more than it will affect us.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion I guess, but it does amaze me how many of you are in favour of starting Totori over Ifill. Even when not 100% fit Ifill creates magic out of nothing, and has proved it time and time again. Totori has shown some promise but...

I'd say most of us want to start Ifill, but I'd rather have him brought back slowly so he's still 100% mid season, Totori needs some game time and starting him will give him that, if things go bad at least you've got Ifill in reserve. The other way around and Ifill gets injured then you'd be annoyed that your star is injured again and that you've lost some composure.

The problem with playing Ifill when he is not 100% fit is that he usually aggrevates injuries and is out for even longer. Just look at what happened last season when we played him in round two against the Jets.

Will let you know Sunday morning how it holds up. It cut up a bit last week because it had about 24 mil of rain on it the day before so it was a bit soft.  We'll be doing as much as we can to get it flat like we usually do, could be working up until kick off with this one. Change overs are hard enough but if the weather is shit it's not gonna be much fun.

^this is another reason why Ifill should stay on the bench, any hint of a uneven pitch is not going to be good for him.....let Totori start and if things look like Ifill is needed then bring him on

Wouldn't Totori be even worse in the rain though? I can't see him being very effective with the ball at his feet in the rain.

maybe, I guess he just had the wrong boots on, I reckon he'll have learned from that experience and still maintain that on a bumpy pitch he'll be fine

He's only played in the one! Give him a chance to do enough to start. He should get used to the physicality soon if Tahiti and the other Island teams are anything to go by. Lets not be too hasty. I don't really think we have a better alternative anyway, you'd be hard pressed to show Boyd or Clarke significantly better.

Don't get me wrong, I think he will come right eventually but just not impressed yet. It was like Daniel's first season, a lot of sitting on the ground spattered with some brilliance. He does have a good eye for finding other players and his shot that hit the upright? were a good sign.

I would like to see Boyd and Clarke given more game time too but definitely too early for starts in my book.

Phoenix $2.90 Roar $2.30 latest at TAB. Think that's where it sits. Looks like weather will be messy, and Roar are more than adaptable to handle that now they're prepared to mix it up with more direct stuff, and hit balls into the box earlier. Herbert had to go back to home base with Ifill and Lia now fit to start, and the players who guts it out last year, with our 2 new boys up front. The key is having speed options on the bench if it threatens to turn to custard. We've never had that before. Pity Fenton won't start as all the town's talking about him, but you wouldn't want to throw him into the toughest home game of the season. His time will come, along with the other younger guys.

Well you can shut up now, martinb. You can just about blummin' well shut up! Because if you've got anything horrid to say about Ifill, then you can just about blummin' well say it to me first!

You're talking about the No. 8  I love!

I wasn't disrespect to HRH Sir Paul of IFiLldom, it was Neil.

I thought he'd like it the best to come on fresh, after his lackeys had well and truly tired out the opposition and as he comes back from injury.

Also I think that given that we've signed Totori, we should give him a shot, not give him one start then put him back to the bench. Ifill is a player we know well and Totori isn't.  I did think he didn't stay on his feet enough, but that he has the potential to worry defences and perhaps become a real attacking threat.

Ifill took a great pen- but we really looked dangerous with the combination of Brockie, Huysegems, Totori...and was it Lochie?? with that great interchange between Brockie and Huysegems for Totori to hit the bar.

I did suggest alternatively Ifill to start up front- perhaps with Totori and Brockie instead of Fenton? Though I'm sure that's not going to happen, especially after Louis' barnstormer in the first game. I think Totori is more likely to beat a player than Fenton (for all his qualities),  is more experienced and is a different prospect.

All I'm saying is that Totori et al perhaps for the first half say 3 or 4- 0, leaving IfiLl fresh for a second half hattrick finishing with a 7-1 win. I thought there were some really encouraging signs against an poorly performed SFC and I wouldn't mind seeing him get the opportunity to continue.

Also given Huysegems pedigree he should be pushing his case for being the best player on the park a bit more strongly. With Brockie, Leo, Manny and the rest plenty of experienced players who should be putting their hands up on attack, rather than wait for Ifill to bail them out with a wonder goal or two.

(Btw I'm usually the Rick okay? Surely Ifill is closer to either Viv or Mike who are both undoubtedly cooler than Rick.)

Ok, well I wasn't super serious, just saying I would like to see Totori given a bit more of a run and a push to make a claim for the first team, rather than back to the bench ....I really think we should bring back Tim Brown and play him and Lia in the centre of the park!

+1 on Clarke. I heard Boyd was great in pre-season, but hasn't shown anything particularly yet?

When has he had a chance to given minutes on the pitch?  Clarke should have had some time last week otherwise why is he actually here...and yes I know it is injury cover but...

Does any one here park at the stadium on game days normally? Just wondering how much it normally costs, I've heard both $20 and $30 mentioned. I know there are free parks down the road, but person I go with "doesn't want to walk a mile to get to the game".

Usually $30, but sometimes $10.

Beware of the free parks, most have a 2 hour maximum, and the council just loves collecting revenue on game days....
